I will definitely donate in a couple of months, when I've got some spare cash. I hated board games before I started watching your reviews because the only games I knew were things like Monopoly, Trouble and Pictionary. I had no idea of the wonderful world of games that awaited me.
Become a YouTube partner. Will find a lotta cash in that to support you. If I had some disposable income, I'd definitely help out. Maybe in a year or two. :)
Hi Tom. It should be you who donated money to me:P If you knew how many board games I've bought because of your youtube review:) I am up to approx. 70/75 1000 thanks for using your time to enlighten us! Hope you never stop! I would definitely donate - however lacking a direct link to Paypal? Just like on ebay - Can it not be done? And smart idea with the board games on the bed, if I ever have in your neighborhood I'll come by and grab a few games: P Many greetings from DENMARK / Claus Bülow
I guess you don't donate to PBS either ORCA? I don't myself, but its because I'm selfish, and broke most of the time. I enjoy your videos Tom, and I have no qualms with someone rewarding a donation.
Shoot, this guy got me back into board games that aren't Risk. I look to the dice tower as the final say in what's a good game or not. That dice tower also looks kinda awesome... I may just have to give him a few bucks. (I can't imagine how much money it takes to run this, have that many kids, a wife, and lots of board games)
There's not many people that would do so much for so little in return. I will gladly support the podcast because I know it has helped me avoid spending a LOT of money on games I would not have liked!!!!
Per their podcast they have already explained that funagain only HOSTS their website. The only other thing Funagain does is give them credit towards purchasing boardgames when people use a code when making purchases with funagain. They don't get paid to do any of these reviews
@ORCA4312 you seem to be under the impression that Tom is doing his reviews just for you, when in reality you are simply leaching off his generosity and creative endeavors. If Tom wants to make money from The Dice Tower he should, period. He provides an excellent service that we've all been using for free. This method allows those of us with a conscience to support him while allowing the free-loaders to still get all the same benefits. So, what is your problem with it?
@jayhl1971 I was always under the impression that a game selling website paid tom to review games. I noticed there were other reviewers on "the dice tower" and that each review has a little link to Funagaingames to purchase the game. I also do not really have a feeling one way or another about making money if possible, but am just suggesting there was already money being made. If not I have a new found appreciation for tom and the other random reviewers :)
I would have much rather seen you offer your items for sale, rather than referring to them as "donations". Also it makes me cringe to know that you posted your family's home address on Youtube. You can make use of a PO Box or a friend's retail location etc.
I think it is a mistake to offer 'rewards' for donations. Once you do that, they are not donations anymore - they are purchases, and that changes the relationship you will have with your viewers.
I know you have a lot of mouths to feed, Tom, but reconsider this.
@ORCA4312 That's not true at all. Since it is a reward for donating, it optional. I know people who will donate and not ask for any rewards. Additionally, non-profit organizations do this all the time. Check out PBS or WHYY. They always have rewards for their donators. Plus, Tom has been doing this for a long time with the Dice Boots in his podcast. I don't think it has "change[d] the relationship" with the viewers at all.
@ORCA4312 When did I say he was a charity? I said "non-profit organization" ... that isn't a charity. PBS is non-profit and they provide a service. They ask for money but give our donation rewards. I think you have some weird view on what rewards are in comparison to actual purchases.
@ORCA4312 He is essentially a not-for-profit organization (or at least The Dice Tower in total is). Look at all the other places that have donation rewards. Is PBS a business by offering rewards to people who donate? I don't think you'll have anyone say they are -- especially when they qualify for a non-taxable organization.
I'm sure someone with a better understanding of the legality behind not-for-profits can explain it better, but suffice to say he has been doing this for a long time.
@ORCA4312 Yes, but his goal is not to make profit by releasing these videos. It is just a special way of thanking the person, it isn't like he is selling them because that isn't his main goal. Plus, you can easily buy a Dice Boot or custom dice for less than what he is giving them for as a bonus -- it is just that: a special reward to people who help him out. Finally, he has sunk a LOT of money into video equip and stuff, he has probably lost more money doing this than he has gained.
@StexeGod It is his motive now. "Send this much to get this item, or send this much to get this item."
I judge him by his actions. You judge him by what you imagine his motives are.
Speculating on his net income via youtube is ridiculous. With all those kids - I doubt very much if making these videos is net loss for him. He couldn't afford that.
Think of it more like Tom and his family is viewer/listener supported and the items are their way of saying thanks. RadioU and TVU do that all the time and they are not considered a business, they are a ministry. So I am not really seeing the problem you have with him doing this. Seems fine to me.
@RhinoBarbarian You can think of it anyway you like. That doesn't make it true.
You know how you say thanks? By SAYING "thanks". He's selling merchandise now.
The Catholic church is one of the richest organizations on the planet. Attaching god's name to your business doesn't change it from being a business, and churches SHOULD be taxed.
So don't donate. No skin off of anyone else's back. But don't tell other people they aren't allowed to or it is bad to or that they are supporting somthing wrong. It is their money. They earned it. Let them spend it however they want.
Besides, if Tom Vasel wants to make The Dice Tower into a proffitable business, who are we to say he is wrong for doing so? His life, his property, his freewill. So...either way we slice it, it is perfectly fine for Mr. Vasel to make/ have made the items and sell them or give them away as he pleases. What right do any of us have to say that is not allowed?
@ORCA4312 I don't think it will change anything. You don't HAVE to donate, you just give if you want. It's not like if you would have to pay every month to be able to watch his videos or something...
@ORCA4312 You are aware that it's been like this for a very long time, right? Donations for a small gift? I'm pretty sure at least the dice towers have been available earlier. It's nothing new, and there is nothing unusual about it if you compare to other podcasts.
If this offer is still on in a few weeks, I will gladly donate!
