The official campaign in NWN can't rival Baldur's gate 2 (the NWN expansion campaigns are better than the original campaign though). But: the mods and the editor compensates for this. There are thousands of mods and many are very well made. So IF you take the mods into account, IMO this game is better than BG2.

Kulregn is absolutely right, it's the mods that made NWN such a fantastic game. Aielund Saga is still the best trilogy I've played through on NWN (and looong, I started out at lvl 1 and ended up with level 37!). Not many games have this sorta longevity that NWN has/had.

I just got NWN2 gold... I guess I got my hopes up, but I was really let down with it. My PC couldn't handle it, it crashed constantly even with minimal graphics, and I couldn't play any multiplayer servers because every single one required a shitload of .hak downloads and more... This is similar with the first, but I could at least play some servers on NWN1, so I'm reverting.

Neverwinter Nights 2 has a better campaign, but the first still wins in the online department. The first game's campaign was really just a showcase of Aurora, though, so really you were buying a toolset and getting a free campaign along with it.

BG2 was better vanilla, but NWN became better because of the expansions and the great modules like Darkness over Daggerford, which has been downloaded over 200,000 times and is seen as a great 30 hour RPG in it own right - right up the with BG2. So there you have just one free mod that many NWN purchasers believe brings NWN up to and maybe beyond BG2. When you consider there are 1,000's of modules, added all up I believe you can definitely say NWN today is a better game than BG2 today.

i like baldurs gate 2's gameplay and graphics, it had beautiful graphics that drew me to the game. Graphics are a part of what makes the game, and you know it. BG2 has better graphics than NWN simply because it is pre-rendered.

NWN, in my opinion is superior to BG because of its editor. It allows anyone to create any kind of mod or adventure, and there are also lots of fan-made mods on the internet so it can be deeper and more complex than the old ones. Don't take me qrong, i liked BG and it's a classic, but now there are better games.

NWN is awful, mind-numbingly boring rubbish. The Infinty Engine games were far, far better. BioWare's work has gone sharply downhill since they parted company with Black Isle Studios. Black Isle should re-form : they were the kings of writing. BioWare couldn't write a shopping-list by themselves. The only developers who are worse at dialogue are Bethesda. The NPCs in Morrowind and Oblivion are totally lacking in personality and individuality. The same applies to NWN : dull, dull, dull !

fyi..most of the devs from black isle, went on to form troika and obsidian, troika made temple of elemental evil, and vampire the masquarade:bloodlines, (spectacluar games) but they are no longer :(, Obsidian made kotor 2,and nwn2, kotor while good was rushed to be done in a year after kotor1, nwn2 is great, but its phenominal now with mask of the betrayer, patches, user created mods/haks, and it has adventure pak and expansion for this fall! gives dynamic overland map and full party creation

Noedius, thanks for the info. My original post was a bit harsh, perhaps, but I'm still nostalgic about the Infinity Engine games. They had a magic about them which has been lost in subsequent efforts, imo. I think the top-down perspective works better for party-based RPGs, though the rotating camera in NWN is an improvement on the static view in the IE games. I also prefer the older, more specialised character classes in the IE games. And a party of six characters is better imo. (cont'd)

But the most serious deterioration in post-IE games is the quality of the writing - and that's why I've always wondered what part Black Isle Studios played in making the likes of BG etc. NWN may be a great multiplayer experience but it's (imo) a dull single-player game. I've never tried NWN2. I'm hoping for great things from Dragon Age, but my guess is that in ten years time the best RPGs will still be the IE games : 'If it ain't broke don't fix it' !

I understand, I loved the infinity engine games too. And the gold-box games before that(i am 30 so i grew up with those), bioware made bauldurs gate 1 & 2, while black-isle made ps:torment, and icewind dale 1 & 2, and fallout 2(and 3, but never released), Bioware has gone down hill since bg2! I blame that on the Crapbox! They should made hardcore pc games like black-isle(obsidain/troika) did. Now I only wonder after the next nwn exp. Who is going to make the next D&D game, and will 4thed be good

My guess is that eventually somebody will realize just how good the BGs (and Torment) were and will revert to type. It may take 5 or 6 (or more) years, however. What Bioware/Black Isle achieved in the IE games was the pinnacle of possibility, imo. Keep your fingers crossed ! Bioware has still got the talent but somehow the magic of the earlier games has gone missing. No offence meant to NWN fans, in spite of what I said earlier. It's always the fans who decide, not the gaming press.

What I can't understand is why Bioware/Black Isle abandoned a winning formula. Okay, so they split up. But everything which has been made since, under the banner 'RPG', has been very poor in comparison. It might have had something to do with sales : BG, BG2 and P:T have been great sellers but slow-burners. No instant money. Like a great song they've had to suffer lack of fame in the short term. Shame on developers and publishers !

It won't be very expensive if you go for the special edition "Ultimate Dungeons and Dragons". For a little more than 20 dollars, you have 8 games and their extensions, including NW ;)

Yes. You need the CD-keys of each respective game; Neverwinter Nights + Shadows of Undrentide + Hordes of the Underdark. It is worth it, though. :)

i find it annoying, the difficulty rises faster than your party progresses so each battle is a nightmare.
