The advocates for H2H main reason for wanting this costly colossal project is, "it will link cities and allow the residents of these cities to seek employment outside the region in which they live" However, there is a immense flaw in they're reasoning. There are no job's in any of the cities they wish to connect with H2H, therefore, the only jobs obtained by the H2H project will be those during the building of this foolish & illogical scheme, which will be temporary jobs at that.
@488scooby your the one who keeps replying to my comments, so whats your point, in the end the people who were moaning about hs2,are the people who wouldnt directly be caused massive problems by it, the NIMBYS,it has to go somewhere ,it has to happen our railways are full to capacity, and we cant make them any wider and also existing track has to many curves and junctions,in other words its not straight enough,so how would the trains acheive high speeds, thats my point,
@488scooby I'm replying to your comments because your comments don't really make sense (and are basically nonsense).
Its a well known fact that there MANY alterntives to HS2......don't believe the spin Cameron and Greening are peddling......that;'s exactly what they want.
Now, back to the 338 homes to be (quite needlesly) demolished for DCs new trainset...
Growth growth progress progress. It means anbolutely nothing to me. A world where beauty is swiflty dismissed in favour of economics, money and getting from A to B is franky a world I'd rather prefer not to live in. Also, Geoffrey Palmer has the best voice in the world :)
When I see steam trains crossing the countryside I never think wow that really ruins an area of natural beauty, I think wow, the Victorian era was marvelous. What is wrong with trains? This argument that it's about time saved is wrong, it's about making the cities of Britain close enough, not about putting the kettle on 20 minutes later. I think this project can be brilliant if it is executed in the right way. Railways are the epitome of functional beauty and Britain's greatest ever invention.
Check out the Balcombe viaduct to see how beautiful railways across the countryside can look.. If you had this in this view from your house and they were going to demolish it you would be 'up in arms' and writing furiously to the Daily Mail about how it might affect your house prices in your twilight years no doubt! westsussex.info/balcombe.shtml
Over the past 100 years we have completely destroyed the woodlands, the natural habitats and the natural countryside of this country. This was mostly due to the action of the farming community raping the land of its beauty.. Look at half the pictures in this video.. Barren fields.. It isnt even beautiful anymore.. The development of the car and the resulting motorways built in the 50s to 70s are equally to blame.
The economic benefit is totally unfounded. The growth of demand appears to be only based on some imaginary growth rate. It is comparable to assuming that the economy will constantly expand. What's the consequence of these assumptions? Over borrowing and waste of resources like HS2. HS2 will never have as much passengers as the High Speed 1. Admit it or not, business connection between London and Birmingham is very limited. Building high speed railways would not stop people driving either.
Well to tell you the truth i was going to tell all you "treehuggers" to walk to london but then i watched the full video before commenting and now i see the full picture !
Are country is on its ass !! and for the government to want to wax £230,000,000 on a rail line that we dont even need is just out this world get that cameron out he is a "B£!!£ND" !!!!
@125ccRider haha you probably dont even have a bike and 125cc well thats nothing i have a quad fasstest in the world thats 1000cc and will do 130mph eat my dust you cock sucking prick
Well it's got to go somewhere; just be glad it's not cutting the green in half! It IS needed, think of the commuters from P'borough, Huntingdon, Bedford, M Keynes, Tring et al that are rammed into trains. We need HS2 to relieve the West Coast, Midland and East Coast, to increase local services. The lines are full. If you plonk extra tracks on the W Coast, then it won't help the Midland or the E Coast, and it will blight other "villages" that adjoin the line. As I said, it's got to go somewhere.
There will always be an England ..Dispite the efforts of our beloved politicians who kiss the arse of Brussels..This enviromental screwup was planned back in 2006 by yes you guessed it Brussels !! showing a map in the Times of the desired route from the middle of europe ..I guess this plan was already in place at the time of the channel tunnel a direct link passing thru major cities on route .Damn shame its beautiful countryside .We the sheeple will obey NOT .Once built land lost foreever
They should just cancel the public enquiry and crack on with building it. The NIMBYs should be ignored, they're responsible for holding back our country.
NayrWillyhams - how shortsited are you exactly? Progress is one thing but it is clear to anyone who has studied the proposals that HS2 is far from the only option and is by far the most expensive and environmentally damaging to boot.
You would think by now we would have learned from our mistakes and those of others but seemingly not. The size of the UK does not warrant HSR and right now public money could be much better spent elsewhere.
Convenience or countryside? I'll take the latter, thanks.
@cb500mark What, more environmentally damaging than lots and lots of cars travelling between London and Manchester? Expensive, sure, as a cost now, but the economic stimulation that will come from being able to get between three of the biggest cities in the country within an hour or two will be immense, not to mention all the jobs created by the construction and design efforts.
What are these other options then? Other than "not at all", which is clearly what you want.
@NayrWillyhams How many people realistically travel from London to Manchester on a regular basis? I'm betting very few. How many need to? Again, very few.
The capacity issue can be easily overcome via improvements to existing services - WCML, Chiltern Line, Midland Mainline. Similarly, journey times can be reduced on existing services by having less stops en route.
Technological improvements (e.g. fibre optic broadband) will benefit far more people and reduce the need to travel too.
@NayrWillyhams The journey to Birmingham will only be improved by twenty minutes which for that amount of money isn't worth it. Also Britain isn't suitable for High Speed trains because it's not flat enough. Yes there are great big roads running through country sides but since it's already there why don't we just run the trains along side it? But no it has to go through even more beautiful country side throwing people out of there homes and ruining people's childhood memories. Yeah great idea.
Haha, this crap is why I was so happy to get out of the Chilterns. Too many people who are opposed to any progress in any way whatsoever. Yeah, screw the jobs HS2 will create, screw the benefit for future generations in terms of convenience of having a high speed rail link to several major cities going right through your area! IT MIGHT MAKE NOISE AND TAKE UP A TINY BIT OF ROOM!
Watch out you people of the North. We did not take heed of the protests coming from Kent and sat back and believed the stories of nimbism and trusted the Government of the country. When high speed rail starts cutting through the Yorkshire Dales, the Lakes or Peak District you may find yourselves in the same position as we Southerners but it will be too late. By then the Government will have at least achieved one thing and the North and South will be equal in our complete despair.
It brings to mind the short-sightedness of the great canal network ~ soon superseeded by the railway. (and then Beechings' subsequent closure of the Great Central main line from London to Nottingham)
Soon other forms of travel (or no travel at all being required, due to IT for example) would replace this, I am sure.
All that damage and cost to save 20 minutes on journey time.... Pretty obvious to anyone who is not financially benefiting that this scheme is a waste of public money.
Oh dear, will Britain one day learn to protect what little open space it has left, before it has all gone? Quality of life is not improved by getting there faster. I know, I moved to New Zealand where life moves at a snails pace in comparison. As a result, there might not be much money down here, but every moment of life is an enjoyable one.
Despite no business case, no environmental case and the prospect of huge costs, I fear that this will happen anyway as the government does not want to listen. I currently travel to Birmingham with my work. The train is never full. It takes 1 hour and 25 minutes and stops 4 times on route. If it didn't stop it would take about 20 minutes longer than the new HS estimates. And Branson has stated that by 2015 his train service will have narrowed that gap to less than 10 minutes. What a tragedy
If being a NIMBY means that I’m not happy that every household in the country will have to pay £1,000 whilst the education system, the armed services and the National Health Service undergo massive cuts then yes, I am a NIMBY and I’m proud of it. It’s not only about our countryside and our homes ‘darn sarf’, it’s also about what will happen to the countryside and homes ‘oop north’ if this multi-billion pound scheme gets the go ahead.
Is it coincidence that the majority of the Chilterns - especially those in the Vale around Risborough and up as far as Buckingham no longer have a sitting MP?
We are now respresented by the Speaker who tells us that he is not allowed to take sides!!!
This a fabulous video, illustrating the barminess of this proposed line. It's not needed, it's not affordable - there is no business case for it.
It's a shame that only at 06:42 on the video is there an illustration of what one of the viaducts might look like. I think this should have been introduced earlier into the footage.
Thank you for this video, which shows that democracy is dead in this country. How anyone can deliberately destroy such beautiful English countryside is beyond me. I am from the North East and know that the plan is to eventually extend this scar across the Derbyshire Dales and Lake District. I sincerely hope HS2 does not happen.
This is a disgusting and disgraceful waste of money and disregard to the Chiltern Hills beauty. We dont need this. Vulcan law should apply here, ....the needs of the many (whose lives will be impacted) outweigh the needs of the few.. No to HS2 across the chilterns?....I think we just need to say NO TO HS2 full stop!!
