Zigbee is slowly being implemented. Within the next 3 years all of southern california will be monitored by Zigbee modules attatched to meters at every house and business excluding the greater L.A. area and the San Diego area. DWP, PG&E and San Diego Gas& Electric are not a part of the smart meter project. PG&E runs their grid with ERT meters and pager/RuG/modem meters.
that would be funny to turn the neigbors heat off during the winter !!! LOL !

All zigbee devices are have security built in.
(It's defined in the spec anyways.)
This means all your traffic can be encrypted using 128-bit AES.
This allows you can control exactly who can view your traffic etc...
