The reason behind this is because the audio is out of phase. This happens when no post production to the sound recordings is done. What happens is when you play the mono recording of one microphone and play it through stereo is the speakers oscillate left and right produce the same sound wave 180 degrees from each other which cancels out the audio frequencies thus making it sound like the noise is coming far away behind you instead of directionally infront of you.
