Such a great song... I saw this movie on VH1 about 5 years ago, and fell in love with it., Here in Mexico it's not very known of, at least not to my generation, and I went through hell to get the dvd, but I finally did and it's now one of my favorite movies.
I always cry when I look at that kid with that tear on his face. There are a lot of kids like him, maybe thy're in your house. Just saying, that when parents fight in front of their kids....Its really awful for them. For the sake of the kids, dont let your shit fuck up thier life.
Cheryl is just fantastic. I just logged on to this Hair sight because I received a sheet of paper with two songs from hair. One song is Easy To Be Hard and the other is Where Do I Go. They both appear to be originals from a typewriter back from the 60's or 70's era. With corrected mistakes, I would like to shear my findings with all.
@superduffman22 I really respect him fighting for peace and justice and all that, but when he thinks that because of it he has to leave such a wonderful and devoted girl, and that beatiful kid behind, that makes him an ass. Stupid git! Glad the others talked some sense into him.
this song just tears your heart out waht a wonderful song I just want to slap that guy and he changes his name this is the mother of your son jerk. At least talk sence into the boy child man

@lavdrhppe you so right about other versions sounding dead. This was the 1st version I ever heard of the song when the movie came out in 79. I don't know alot about musicality but this version resonates with my soul
This is my favourite film......the songs are amazin....but this one takes your breathe away.......it connects on so many levels when you love some one so much....
I grew up watching this VHS over and over. This song is by far the most moving and powerfully delivered in the entire movie! I get goose-bumps even now watching it. It is not easy to convey such emotion simply by staring at the camera and this woman NAILS IT!
@LvndrHppE I listened to the broadway soundtrack AFTER seeing the movie (and hearing this song) and was so disppointed by the Broadway version. No comparison.
After so many times viewing this video I spotted a continuity error. 1:251:382:06 The extras walking toward the camera go from 2 women to 1 man and back to the same 2 women. LOL I know that's so pointless. I've just watched this vid so many times.
The song is an incredible composition and was able to stand along, extracted from the musical and made a monster hit by Three Dog Night, but with it's background in the musical, it is MUCH more emotional. Cheryl voice, Lyrics by James Rado & Gerome Ragni, and Music by Galt MacDermot created a monster musical moment.
What makes this song SO emotional is unfortunately edited out of this clip; Hud's Fiancee (Cheryl Barnes) is pregnant with his child and after she tells him, he does not want to take responsibility, but instead has bigger plans with his life. She is left to face the prospect of having a fatherless child or have an abortion, which was a HEATED political issue at the time...
@johng6l She's NOT pregnant with his child, she has given birth to the Laffayete Junior years ago, and while she is singing this song, she's holding the hand of her and Hud's child. I have no idea where you got the pregnancy from, the one who's pregnant is Jennie (the other girl in the video).
When HAIR was released I felt it was outdated and hoke , It was almost 1980, The film was about the late 60s-early 70s,(by the 1980 most had cut their hair, the beginning of the end of political protest and the start of a self indulgent generation.) But when recently watching the film again, I thought it was a really good impression of that era ,done through music and plot. This song shines out over the whole film, and was and still is true.
I saw this movie when I was about 15, and it changed my life! this song particularly. Now I live in NYC, and I can't go by Washington Square Park and not glance over to where this scene was filmed. Shame that cherly barnes disappeared from flim and performing after this.
I cannot watch this scene or listen to this song without crying. I saw this movie when I was 10, the year it came out and listening to her amazing voice and seeing her cute little baby's face made me so sad. It still hurts my heart to watch and hear it.
Yes, I agree, this is the BEST song from the movie.
I saw this movie in the theater when I was 10 (31 yrs ago), this song made me cry. I didn't fully understand it then, but her amazing voice and standing next to her cute little baby, made me sad and so confused. I love this song.
I found what may be an interesting piece of information. In the background of this film, on the left, is the Asch Building, the home of the Triange Shirwaist Factory company back in 1911, one hundred years ago, the place where a hundred women lost their lives due to the conservative refusal to regulate workplace safety.
Wow ! . . . . the words to this song is just as true now as it was then . If anything its easier to be hard, easier to say no . . . . We lost something along the way from 1979 until now . . . . . thanks for posting and reminding me that in my heart Im still a hippy
Wow this song is SO deep, and true This song does not just go great for this song this goes for anyone who is a hater. it's just so deep and true. I swear hearing her heart pour out in this song made me want to cry and run up to her and give her a hug. Her voice makes the words come to life and truly mean something other then some song! :)
@kryfon I will never be able not to cry at the end of the movie when they sing "failures of the flesh" and "let the sunshine in" when George is taken to war :'( :'( it's just so sad
loads of christians are helping strangers and their own kids are being forgotton, not just christians, but others were around you when you were born and now dont care whats going on with you, like if your sad or need love , yea brotherly love, something so simple like caring, its like they hate you,i hate being ignored
1 person finds it easy to be hard. As a native New Yorker I usually do too, but even I was touched by the music along with the sight of an abandoned mother with their little pickaninny baby.
Interesting fact. Miss Barnes was working as a cleaning lady in a motel when she went to the open call for the movie. She sang this song and they hired her on the spot. Such a beautiful rendition. My favorite.
I think the most incredible versions of HAIR is by the Arizona Theatre Company - see the video of Let the Sunshine In with Morgan James and Rashindra Scott - it may me shake. (comments?)
This recording of Easy to be Hard by Cheryl Barnes is stupendous and moving and is the best part of the movie, though I don't think it is fair to be critical of all the others (Caissie Levy, Idina Menzel, etc) because they were doing the original version from the play, so they weren't supposed to be as emotive.

I totally agree smkejumper69. I just saw the show tonight and I was thinking the exact same thing. This song is one of the highlights of Hair and Shelia's voice was just subpar. Cheryl just kills on this song.
It was so awesome( the Show)... did you love it? Took the hubby...he's a bit conservative...forgot to tell him about the nakedness...his face was Classic when clothes came off!!!
@Smkejumper69 that is so funny, i want to go too. but it leaves on the 23rd and i just don't think i'll get to make it. i've never seen it live, but maybe some day i will. i'm glad you enjoyed it though.
Hey laron214, it leaves the Pantages on the 23rd, but it goes on to the Orange County Performing Arts Center, through February I believe, another chance for you to see it in SoCal, please try, you will love it! I would have kicked myself if I missed it! I missed West Side Story and it's killing me. Good luck!!!

I saw HAIR 3 days ago at the Pantages in Hollywood, it was sung by the Sheila character and couldnt even touch Cheryl Barnes' vocals, this song needs to be sung by someone with a really strong voice, the musical was awesome by- the- way!!!
I saw Hair in Toronto Ontario Canada and then in London England.
I loved seeing it both places but let me tell you - I am proud to say that no matter where Hair was performed, - the critics kept stating that it was done best in the city I was born in and that was in : Toronto! Wow! What memories!
Easy To Be Hard will always be my favourite song. If I had had the guts to have audtioned way back when , that is the song I would have loved to have sang! I love the melody and the words both!
This is the best song ever, it speaks across all boundaries, all races, all religions...it should be played on every TV at least 3x a day...and replace every national anthem. We are all HUMANS first, then whatever race or religion we claim, but Humans and needing friends First. I cannot watch this without singing along, and though Cheryl and I share a last name, I cannot do it justice or I'd post it. Maybe I'll try, just maybe...(goes back to watching and singing and crying with the music)
I remember hearing this many, many timesat the Aquarius theater in Hollywood (on Sunset Blvd). I am now 60 years old, and I still think about how I treat my friends, hopefully better than I treat wannabees. But it is sometimes difficult to remember the REAL stuff when flattery comes your way.
Nothing ever changes.Neocons,Gop,and the Tea party.Say they are following the ways of Christ. An yet they don't care about the unemployed. An health care, you would rather they would suffer and die.Because it cost too much.To hold back on even on children. It says in the Bible give to everyone that ask of you.Not to who you feel deserve it.
@Darthon62 Please don't forget the animals and the homeless, We All need help, and if the Gov't would just NOT build 3 bombers, & stop paying farmers not to farm, and open all the empty buildings that no one can afford to rent, so much would be fixed! Easy to be hard.. especially when our (US) gov't isn't really watching anything but their bank accounts getting fatter. We could feed the world, we could make medical care free to those who need it (all of us) but no, it's too easy just to say no.
I loved this song when Three Dog Night first recorded it. I watched Hair when it came out in 1979. I decided to rent it last week and watch it again. I did not remember the movie at all. The one and only thing I remember about the movie was the unforgettable rendition by Cheryl Barnes. What a fantastic voice and delivery. I just had to listen to it again on You tube.
Nothing changes. The Gop say they care for the people. An yet they tell the poor too bad if you need help.Like they don't want to work...please.There is also millions of people can't afford health care. The responce is die..we don't care. Then they say we follow Christ.Jesus said give to everyone who ask from you.Not who we think deserves it.We are our brother keeper.
@Seb30able I think a more apt description would be "gave me goose bumps" when somthing is described as making one's skin crawl, it's generally considered to be repulsive.
@Seb30able No problem. By the way, you'd be surprised how many gifted singers are out there that just haven't had the right break or exposure. Unfortunately, today's music industry is more about commercial appeal as opposed to genuine talent!
Saw Hair in Lincoln , Ne The first show. I was the only person in the theater. I sat through the movie twice. Remember when you could do that. Nebraska doesn't care about the bleeding crowd, the ultimate corporate state.
I agree with you guys. It's one of the most beautiful songs EVER written. She does a fine job of singing this in the movie version of "Hair." I was a little too young at the time for my parents to allow me to watch it - so, I basically grew up listening to the Three Dog Night version - which is, I'm sure that some of you will agree, awesome and sung with so much emotion. I hear NOTHING like this being created these days. It's a shame, how the "mainstream music" which is promoted to death SUCKS
I don't agree with the last comment. I think this song is great no matter how it is performed. I saw the new Broadway production. This song has always touched and it did then. I will say that Cheryl Barnes has a great interpretation, but the song itself is absolutely wonderful.
She is so amazing!!!! Imwish I could sing like that.... how can she hit the high tones without shouting??? or changing to headvoice? how can i learn that?
I HAVE NEVER HEARD A SONG WITH SO MUCH POWER AND HOPE IN IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
what amazes me is that this was a woman the director found singing in a church....what happened to her?! waste of a talent not making her name huge if you ask me....best version ever sung without a doubt
This is the ABSOLUTELY GREATEST character entrance in a film ever. You're focused on the lead trio, and the 4 minor characters (5 counting the kid) come in and take over again
not on broadway she wasnt...and wow i just read that cuz my friend wrote it and i apologize if it offended anyone...seriously my friend was on my account and all she meant was that on broadway she wasnt....sorry for any hurt feelings...really :/
Most revolutionary wannabes are all about acting tough and bad and being hard. But it is harder to be kind and loving. It is easier to be rude and sarcastic and humorous with our opponents. It is harder to give good answers that have been thoughtfully worked out.
The song is powerfully sung by a great singer previously unknown to me. A true blessing and a wake up call for those of us involved in rhetoric, debate, apologetics, or just plain dealing with our fellow human beings. Thanx
and you don,t have to say more, because people would understand what you mean in this society of hypocrisy, but i do understand and i feel the same way as you
@Blogrich55 Very well put! Everybody can gain something from this song. It's so real and soulfully sung. I'm actually dealing with a difficult situation involving my college roommate right now and thought of this song. On the one hand, it reminds me of her because she's behaving as though she's heartless and has no feelings. But it also inspires me to continue being nice and respectful to her, as difficult as it may be, because no additional harm will be done by my doing so.

@Seb30able I think a more apt description would be "gave me goose bumps" when somthing is described as making one's skin crawl, it's generally considered to be repulsive.
buddhaman4518 1 year ago
@buddhaman4518 Yea you're right I guess.
Seb30able 1 year ago

The emotional energy of both love and confusion coming from Cheryl brings me
to tears every time I watch this, especially as I focus on the eyes of her and the child. This is absolutely brilliant.

I don't agree with the last comment. I think this song is great no matter how it is performed. I saw the new Broadway production. This song has always touched and it did then. I will say that Cheryl Barnes has a great interpretation, but the song itself is absolutely wonderful.

@SsWsSw123 The story I heard is that she came to an open casting call, with no agent. She had been working as a maid at a motel.
The entire song was shot in one take. Now THAT is amazing, and yes, SHE is amazing.

Thanx
