curios to see a balistic test with the gel that has something that simulates bones or more specifically the skull 8D, ammo looks perfect for zombies lol
Wow this is an awesome round. I thought about using the 75 grain Hornady round for coyote hunting but now I may just use this. But my only question what is the performance difference in this round between .223 Remington and the 5.56 NATO?
great video thanks for all the info it helps when picking ammo for hunting deer and hogs here in south alabama and for personal defence keep up the good work
@MrAnimalControl sorry pally, but i disagree... i have seen quite a few videos of people using the .223 rem on pronghorn with a bushmaster (thats right, a fuckin' bushmaster for hunting deer/antelope). weather it was hornady superformance varmint or not shouldnt exactly make a difference for even the fmj's fragment in tissue not to mention immense hydrostatic shock. i still firmly believe that a good vital hit would drop average-sized whitetail just as well as a .308 if not more efficiently.
@Radion561 in my opinion when shtf and wrol happens its best to have any ammo and even better to have more ammo..so i stock up on cheap fmjs.cause when shtf and with no rule of law im not worried about where the bullet travels after i hit my target..but thats just me..
@Radion561 assuming the person wasnt wearing armor and you shot them in the chest I think the heart would be GONE. Yeah this will do the trick but I would only have maybe 100 rounds of it on me. I would also stock up on Silver Bears since they are cheap and plentiful or PMC's which to date have never done me wrong.
Very informative! I use the 40gr V-Max in my reloads and this shows why coyotes drop like stones. No exit wounds yet. I place my shots center on frontal and just behind the fore-arm on broadside shots. Never a shoulder or head shot. This definately shows why a coyote can't go anywhere after being hit. No heart or lungs. DRT!! Thank you for your time putting a great video together.
iam looking to do the same with my dpms, so far its grouping everything i feed it very well, but hornady is great to be honest and my best groups by far are from hornady, especially 53gr, iam wondering if i should stick to 53 or bump up to 55 or even 60??? any imput would be great, i know shot placement is key but when u group under an inch at 200 iam comfterble with a head shot. let me know it seems to be an intresting topic, maybe mr tn could compare them for us. let me know.peace
Love the .223 sim test. Would like to see some on the M855 and some of the heaver loads out of a 16in barrel AR15. Thank you for all your time and info.....
you said let you know if we liked this ... i didn't like it , LOVED IT , i have been looking at this one and now i think id defiantly buy some. also i was wandering if you do some more of the 223 do you think Hornady 75 gr TAP FPD could be in store for us as a lovely treat ?? ha but for real as a kid would say while clapping hands and jumping all around AGAIN AGAAINNN! more 223 ballistic gel for sure.
@tnoutdoors9 I'm up in Montana.. took 2 large doe last year with my .223. Weatherby Vanguard bolt action..handloaded 53gr barnes TSX @ 3292fps.. first one was a heart shot.. other one was liver and only ran 30-40yds and dropped. Went thru one rib and the exit hole was around .75" Barnes TSX are solid performers. These were only at 100yds +- on both though. Now I just use my Mosin Nagant Scout setup ;) Awesome video! Love your choice of setups on videos..and details so in depth. Dont change!
@katkid134 yes, 22 long rifle has killed more deer than we would ever like to think by shining....but seriously you could take a deer within 200 yards with 223 not sure on this round but neighbor uses his every year. Personally I would step it up to a min of 243 or 25-06 they are way better for deer, 270 is my choice but to each is own.
@katkid134 if the deer is 150 yards or less and you don't hit bone the deer won't take a second step but there maybe some meat damage. The bad news if you do hit bone you are going to end up with a bad splash wound and will be tracking a wonded deer. If you don't find it, the deer may live for days suffering before giving up the ghost. if you are going to hunt deer with a .223, a varmint bullet isn't your first choice. A 55 grain tripple shock from Barnes is a much better choice.
@katkid134 This looks like it could easily take down a whitetail if you get a good shot in the vitals. anything larger than that like mule deer or elk is probably out of the question. i personally like how it 'explodes' without a whole lot of the bullet making its way through the rest of the tissue. in short, penetration without over doing it.
@deltaomegaable Too light, and too much expansion...no penetration on a deer. No blood trail. I have shot whitetails in Michigan with a 70 grain ballistic tip in my .243 and had bad results. No blood, no exit and won't do again. Hunting wolves in Idaho with this superformance round shortly.
@MrAnimalControl 70gr aren't designed for deer. Lighter bullets like that are meant for varmints. Use at least 85gr for deer. I personally use 100gr in my .243 with excellent results.
@katkid134 I personally know ppl who have killed Deer with a .220 Swift with vitals shots. Idk the exact difference between a .223 and a .220 other than the .220 is WAY faster (approx 1000 ft/s faster). Personally I wouldn't hunt deer with anything smaller than a .243 just for the reason of a quick death.
Hog hunting with a .223?! A .223 will kill a hog, but it's way down the list for the ethical hunting of hogs. Have you ever tried to follow a blood trail from a deer or hog that has a pinpoint entrance hole and no exit hole? There is no blood trail. Loading a 75 gr bullet into a .223 case is like mounting 24" rims on a Honda Civic. It's only an advantage for AR-15 competition shooters. It's a disadvantage for shocking, dropping and killing. Eugene Stoner got it EXACTLY right the first time.
i use the same ammo and same caliber for my savage model 10 tactical and it goes in with a little tiny hole on them 'yotes and comes out with about a 3in diameter blood circle on the exit. but for hog huntin i perfer a larger calliber so i use my accuaracy international .338 lapua.
Interesting test. I don't think I'd use this round on anything bigger then a coyote. I'd like to see some testing of heavier bullets in this caliber. 62 and 75gr. Although I'm not sure your 1 in 9 barrel would work well with a 75gr bullet, you might get some key holing, then again maybe not with it being 24" long.
Awesome test. Could you try the hornady 75 gr tap or 75 gr bthp superformance in the ballistic gelatin. Love to know what the wound channel is like with those hollow points. Love all of your videos. Thanks
That visual looking inside-out defines "devastating". Certainly puts a different perspective on the .223 compared with little round holes in paper targets.
wow that is an amazing round. thank you again for the most educational channel on you tube in regards to balistics. clearly the most valuable channel out there today. keep up the fantastic work.
The Vmax is made to be explosive and MAN look at that energy transfer. All of it transferred in the first 6 inches of penetration. Pretty awesome stuff. Thanks for the test!
Would you ever consider this test using Green Tip ammo so maybe some of us can understand why the US Military uses it as it's standard ball ammo? Or even testing .30 Carbine from your M1 Carbine?
@SacTownStudios The M855 green tip ammo is made for penetrating hard objects. It would pass right through a block of gelatin. There's really no reason to test it as it is being used for a different reason and in a different environment than what we require.
@metalhead2508 Which is kinda the point I'm getting at, it's made for penetrating hard objects but as our standard ball round it's what is loaded into everything and when have we actually fought anybody wearing body armor, likely actually fought somebody in a huge engagement. It just passes right through unarmored targets. For me it's basically taking away what made the .223 so great back in the day. I could be wrong but that's just my 2 cents worth
well thats kinda what i thought too. thats why i asked. i have never been hog hunting and i thought maybe a few of you out there probably have before. so i guess i will stick to my original plan, and take the old 30.06..thanks everyone who commented. i'll let you know if i get one!!!:)
REALLY LOVE to see this with M193 ball!!!!!! Then maybe M855? But I know quite a few folks that stock M193 as their SHTF round as it's about $1.50 more than WOLF per 20 where I am(!!!!! Awesome, I know!), and call it a HUNCH, but I think M193 would PROBABLY fare better than 55-62 grn FMJ WOLF!
Excellent and Imformative sums your videos up my man. I use the 55gr Vmax and Sierra Blitzkings in my 22-250 and they are devastating!!! Did exactly what a ballistic tip should do!
Keep up the good work,
J from the UK
P.S. how the hell do you afford all this stuff, rifles, pistols ammo and all the gear lol!?
762girl- thanks for the info. and your right not bad for a girl...lol...j/k but no, seriously, i have a good 30.06 round. thats why i was wondering if this vmax would be strong enough to bust thru all that "armor" on the wild hogs. i mean i know its designed as a varmint round but it looks like it could inflict alot of damage, i just wasnt sure if its strong enough for the hogs.
how do you think that round might do against wild hogs? we plan on going wild hog hunting in georgia next week so i was wondering if i should buy those and take my AR, or if i just need to take my 30.06.
...I've killed hogs with this round; ranging from 80lbs to 150lbs hogs. Even my 204 Ruger Bushmaster with a 40gr bullet took down a 100lbs hog easily. Just sayin...
@kaox44 iam looking to do the same with my dpms, so far its grouping everything i feed it very well, but hornady is great to be honest and my best groups by far are from hornady, especially 53gr, iam wondering if i should stick to 53 or bump up to 55 or even 60??? any imput would be great, i know shot placement is key but when u group under an inch at 200 iam comfterble with a head shot. let me know it seems to be an intresting topic, maybe mr tn could compare them for us. let me know.peace
@tnshootingtimes Hi! If you're hunting anything like the Russian or Russian/feral hogs, the large ones have a thick cape (can be 1.5"+) of cartilaginous 'armor' over their shoulders and lungs. Very high velocity bullets (even fast expanding lighter bullets in the 30-06) will blow up on this material. .44Mag Keith style lighter cast will work fine on these as well as the stronger med velocity 30-06 ammunition -
overkill but the Finn Aagard 180gr Partition at 2800 will kill anything in N. America and a lot in Africa. Strangely enouth, the 5.7x28mm (non expanding) works on hogs because it drills through the protective layers or bone then tumbles.
strangely enough the 5.7x28mm non expanding 'premium' ammo works because it drills through the shield before tumbling. Maybe overkill, but it's nice to make the Finn Aagard 180gr Nosler Partition load at 2800. It will drop anything in N. America and lots in Africa.
just remembered, if you have the time, order a hog call. 1. they're hilarious (esp if you use it around the halls where you work (giggle-I actually used to do that)) 2. Hogs in brush often respond. Also, a professional feral hog hunter here in CA uses a secret mix of Sour Milk and mashed up assorted donuts to attract them if baiting is legal in your area :) Not bad for a girl huh?
When I get the time I hunt hogs in N Fl. We never use an AR as long distance shots are not the usual however, we like .30 caliber ammo for quick kills. I use an AK with Brown Bear soft points and a red dot, sporting and good kills. If you use an AR, use a hunting round and if it was me, I'd carry a backup like a 44mag revolver. More than interesting, wound one of those nasty swamp hogs and see if he runs away from you or towards you. GL
@tnshootingtimes i have used Hornadys .223 varmint round on 40-90kg hogs and it seems to work fine for me like with any bullet a good chest or head shot will do the job,
@tnshootingtimes Hogs are a lot tougher than people think. a varmint bullet is great for coyotes and smaller thin skined animals. if you are going to use a 223 for hog hunting, get a deeper penetrating bullet. the 55 grain barns tripple shock is good hog medicine for a .223. your .30-06 would be a much better choice in my opinion though. I head shot a hog from 50 yards with a .308 and it kicked for a couple minutes before it gave up the ghost. wild hogs are tougher than folks think.
I'd also like to suggest (maybe someone beat me to it) that I wouldn't also mind seeing some kind of shotgun testing. Buckshot would certainly be in the defensive arena for your regular testing scenarios, but this might also open up some of the more interesting types of ammo.
Was wondering when you'd get around to testing rifles with this stuff!! I think many of your videos have shown you a pretty damn good shot, but at the same time I appreciate the logistics that would go into a test like this all the same!!! Hopefully we could squeeze some interesting rifle/caliber long range tests from you in the future!!! Love the channel!
You should do a comparison of the V-MAX, varmageddon, and the varmint grenade bullets. I've been searching for that, and I always find a comparison of two, but never all 3.
excuse the language but i must say HOLY SHIT i know what im taking when i look for coyotes with my 6mm remington would you consider using the barnes varmint grenades?
11-20-2011: WOW.....I think everyone wants to see some rifle tests! To be clear, as of November 2011 I can test .223 Remington and 5.56 mm NATO, that's it. Plenty to keep me busy there. Of course, I'm already testing .22 LR from a Ruger 10/22 and expect to pick up the pace on those tests.
As for these calibers:
7.62 x 39 - not likely anytime soon.
.308 - possible at some point in 2012.
Others.... .270, 30-06, .458 magnum (LOL), etc. - not even on my long term radar at this time.
I think I know why your shot was off a little to the right. I am guessing you were not wearing your Zombie Apocalypse Response Team shirt were you? :) Great video!
THIS IS THE BEST AMMO TEST IN A LONG TIME! Almost as good as that guy that shoots meat with 10mm's! Maybe it is. PLEASE more medium range tests with 223 and 7.62x39! Even 50yd with handguns! Did I say please more mediun tests with rifle/carbine? 6.5 Grendel & 6.8SPC and 6mm223 & ,,,
did you c hickok45 on tv the other night ? he was on 20 dumbest hillybilly ( no joke ) they had some clips of his halloween n christmas videos .. he was number 20 .
definately like the idea of testingrounds other than handgun rounds. The timing of this video is ironic in that my girlfriend just ordered me a Stag Arms model 8 for Christmas. And I was thinking about ammo options.
@lHustonProductionsl that sika deer i shot with the 5.45x39 hornady round had about a 2 inch wide exit wound- tops of the lungs and heart were turned to jelly...honestly,the shot was only about 40 yards - but it really did do some massive damage for the size of the round...i know alot of people hate the 5.45,,,,,but for the cost and it's effectiveness - you can't beat it...
Thanks for this. I was hoping to see some of your gel tests for rifles at longer distances. So now we have it. One question: what purpose does the red polymer tip serve?
Four shots pretest to confirm sighting, 1.75" group at 210 yards. Two of those shots were on top of each other, then one low and one high but all shots had the same windage alignment. No wind during those shots. Steel of course (tombstone pepper popper); I hate shooting paper. I also used the 53 gr V-MAX in the scope cam "nightshot" vid posted recently; aiming through the camera viewfinder and accuracy was remarkable. Thanks for the suggestions.
@Orthrus Greentips are crap, crap, crap. If they have to be issued, issue them to SAW gunners (the weapon they were designed for). Otherwise, soldiers and Marines should be using the original 55gr FMJ.
@lHustonProductionsl everything u say is true except for 5.56 performing better at close ranges, shooting anything at close range with 5.56 and it can do moderate damage, shoot something close with the 7.62 and it more less disapears, i would give long range to the 5.56 tho it shoots flatter, is more accurate and retains more energy at long distances.
Damn! Exactly what you want in a varmint round, instant energy transfer via massive expansion. Actually surprised to see so much of the bullet intact. Great video. Way better than just showing us what it would do to a jug of water.
@lHustonProductionsl I'm aware of the Geneva Convention nonsense, pointless to this discussion. My original statement was to someone other than yourself concerning the effectiveness of this round VS FMJ. In my original comment, I was telling that other fellow he was mistaken in his thinking if he thought full metal jacket performed the same as this. This discussion has nothing to do with the military issued ammunition, but the difference between FMJ and Hornaday A-MAX. Try to pay attention.
Nice I was wondering what to use on coyotes

Katkid 134..
No way I'd use this on deer.....at least not whitetails. Not enough penetration......a shoulder would stop this dead.
Love this ammo! Shoots into less than .75 inch @ 100 yds from my completely stock Remington Model 7.

Why won't anything heavier than 50gr shoot through my 9:1 accurately? What ammo does the Military use? Probably heavier?

Absolutely do not use this for deer hunting! Head shot- never unless you are a pro!
3rd deer in as many years - starving with a shattered jaw, wandered through my garden this winter. I hate dumb ass hunters!
A vitals shot would be devastating, but you would waste tons of meat and probably get lead poisoning anyway!
Use a 55 or 62 grain Barnes TSX or a 62 grain Fusion to the vitals in .223".

@tnshootingtimes I'm just not seeing this working well for hogs; weight, density, mass, and that's just the hog!
what if you just bought the superformance sts 165gr or 180gr in the 30-06 for wild hogs?
gabrielf1911 3 months ago
That visual looking inside-out defines "devastating". Certainly puts a different perspective on the .223 compared with little round holes in paper targets.
jpm1211 3 months ago
wow that is an amazing round. thank you again for the most educational channel on you tube in regards to balistics. clearly the most valuable channel out there today. keep up the fantastic work.

SacTownStudios 3 months ago
@SacTownStudios The M855 green tip ammo is made for penetrating hard objects. It would pass right through a block of gelatin. There's really no reason to test it as it is being used for a different reason and in a different environment than what we require.
metalhead2508 3 months ago in playlist More videos from tnoutdoors9
@metalhead2508 Which is kinda the point I'm getting at, it's made for penetrating hard objects but as our standard ball round it's what is loaded into everything and when have we actually fought anybody wearing body armor, likely actually fought somebody in a huge engagement. It just passes right through unarmored targets. For me it's basically taking away what made the .223 so great back in the day. I could be wrong but that's just my 2 cents worth

Also, are there bullets that don't explode like this?

REALLY LOVE to see this with M193 ball!!!!!! Then maybe M855? But I know quite a few folks that stock M193 as their SHTF round as it's about $1.50 more than WOLF per 20 where I am(!!!!! Awesome, I know!), and call it a HUNCH, but I think M193 would PROBABLY fare better than 55-62 grn FMJ WOLF!

I'd like to see this same test with M855 and M193 at maybe 100, 200, and 300 yds. Very good test video!!!

762girl- thanks for the info. and your right not bad for a girl...lol...j/k but no, seriously, i have a good 30.06 round. thats why i was wondering if this vmax would be strong enough to bust thru all that "armor" on the wild hogs. i mean i know its designed as a varmint round but it looks like it could inflict alot of damage, i just wasnt sure if its strong enough for the hogs.
tnshootingtimes 3 months ago
In your opinion, would this be good defensive ammo out of a 16" AR-15 with a carbine length gas system?
migkillertwo 3 months ago
now i now why 30-06 in the hornady balistic tip with the red polymer tip is so devestating to a deer cause if a 223 does that what does 30-06 do

how do you think that round might do against wild hogs? we plan on going wild hog hunting in georgia next week so i was wondering if i should buy those and take my AR, or if i just need to take my 30.06.

...I've killed hogs with this round; ranging from 80lbs to 150lbs hogs. Even my 204 Ruger Bushmaster with a 40gr bullet took down a 100lbs hog easily. Just sayin...
kaox44 2 months ago
@kaox44 iam looking to do the same with my dpms, so far its grouping everything i feed it very well, but hornady is great to be honest and my best groups by far are from hornady, especially 53gr, iam wondering if i should stick to 53 or bump up to 55 or even 60??? any imput would be great, i know shot placement is key but when u group under an inch at 200 iam comfterble with a head shot. let me know it seems to be an intresting topic, maybe mr tn could compare them for us. let me know.peace
MrDaajman 2 months ago
@tnshootingtimes Hi! If you're hunting anything like the Russian or Russian/feral hogs, the large ones have a thick cape (can be 1.5"+) of cartilaginous 'armor' over their shoulders and lungs. Very high velocity bullets (even fast expanding lighter bullets in the 30-06) will blow up on this material. .44Mag Keith style lighter cast will work fine on these as well as the stronger med velocity 30-06 ammunition -
762girl 3 months ago
overkill but the Finn Aagard 180gr Partition at 2800 will kill anything in N. America and a lot in Africa. Strangely enouth, the 5.7x28mm (non expanding) works on hogs because it drills through the protective layers or bone then tumbles.
762girl 3 months ago
strangely enough the 5.7x28mm non expanding 'premium' ammo works because it drills through the shield before tumbling. Maybe overkill, but it's nice to make the Finn Aagard 180gr Nosler Partition load at 2800. It will drop anything in N. America and lots in Africa.
762girl 3 months ago
just remembered, if you have the time, order a hog call. 1. they're hilarious (esp if you use it around the halls where you work (giggle-I actually used to do that)) 2. Hogs in brush often respond. Also, a professional feral hog hunter here in CA uses a secret mix of Sour Milk and mashed up assorted donuts to attract them if baiting is legal in your area :) Not bad for a girl huh?
762girl 3 months ago
@tnshootingtimes
GL

@tnshootingtimes Way to weak, 30.06 or .308 or anything around those calibers is the way to go
keesurt 3 months ago
@tnshootingtimes i have used Hornadys .223 varmint round on 40-90kg hogs and it seems to work fine for me like with any bullet a good chest or head shot will do the job,
bowman580 3 months ago

TheViperOSU 3 months ago
Was wondering when you'd get around to testing rifles with this stuff!! I think many of your videos have shown you a pretty damn good shot, but at the same time I appreciate the logistics that would go into a test like this all the same!!!

Thanks again, KB.
wilkbor 3 months ago
Excellent. I like the idea of doing 5.56/.223 loads. Some others I'd suggest are:
5.56mm 75gr Hornady
5.56mm 50gr Blackhills TSX
5.56mm 70gr TSX SSA (better have 24" of gelatin or a suitable backstop
.223 62gr XM223SP1 or 64gr Golddot.
5.56mm 62gr MK318 (T556TNB1)
What kind of accuracy did the 53gr yield?
ghostrider1krr 3 months ago
@ghostrider1krr

Good hell, if only we issued that ammo for combat use. The current greentips just punch straight through and leave .22 sized holes. Worthless.
Orthrus 3 months ago
@Orthrus Greentips are crap, crap, crap. If they have to be issued, issue them to SAW gunners (the weapon they were designed for). Otherwise, soldiers and Marines should be using the original 55gr FMJ.
mulkurul85 3 months ago
@lHustonProductionsl everything u say is true except for 5.56 performing better at close ranges, shooting anything at close range with 5.56 and it can do moderate damage, shoot something close with the 7.62 and it more less disapears, i would give long range to the 5.56 tho it shoots flatter, is more accurate and retains more energy at long distances.
deadtofall666 3 months ago
fantastic review. A similar style of review using the Winchester .223 ballistic silver tip ammunition would also be very interesting.
RoughNeck20 3 months ago
Damn! Exactly what you want in a varmint round, instant energy transfer via massive expansion. Actually surprised to see so much of the bullet intact. Great video. Way better than just showing us what it would do to a jug of water.
HawkLMT 3 months ago
@lHustonProductionsl I'm aware of the Geneva Convention nonsense, pointless to this discussion. My original statement was to someone other than yourself concerning the effectiveness of this round VS FMJ. In my original comment, I was telling that other fellow he was mistaken in his thinking if he thought full metal jacket performed the same as this. This discussion has nothing to do with the military issued ammunition, but the difference between FMJ and Hornaday A-MAX. Try to pay attention.
