This is the very first R&R song I heard ,when I changed the radio station on our radio in the apartment in the Edenwald Houses around 1955 . I was blown away ! I still love this song.
What an outstanding performance! A great record to begin with years ago, and such a fine energetic performance now! Long live the Bobbettes and Mr. Lee!
This tune came out when I was in junior high. I still think it exemplifies early rock and roll and was certainly one of the best ever recorded. It's pure, raw rock and roll with very few impediments to a true sound of the early days. There are certainly others, but this is definitely one of my very favorites. Too bad they couldn't come back with more great tunes. So many "one hit wonders" back then.
Helen Gathers left the group for good in 1962, Jannie Pought died in 1980 and Laura Webb passed away just last year, 2001. The two original lead singers, Emma Pought Patron and Reather "Dimples" Dixon Turner, are carrying on with the group with two new singers, Debra Thompson and Pamela Tate.
My little girl loves this song and listens to it all the time. So one day when she came home from school singing The Monkey and Alligator song, she put some Bobbette umph into it. You should definitly check out her video, it's really cute!
We saw them last year (2010) in Spain at the Screamin Festival. Those ladies can still really sing! I know what to expect, to be honest, and they were utterly amazing - enjoyed the gig so much ;o)
I remember this song when I was a little girl, it's just as cool now as it was then! It was a huge hit! The Bobbettes are still just as awesome now as then! They all look really good!
FOR ALL OF U THAT WANT TO KNOW THE CORRECT FACTS ABOUT THIS SONG. EMMA AND REATHER SANG THE LEAD TOGETHER TO MAKE IT SOUND LIKE ONE PERSON BECAUSE THEIR VOICES WERE NOT AS STRONG AS THEY ARE TODAY. NOW ONLY REATHER SINGS IT BECAUSE THERE ARE ONLY 4 PEOPLE AND EMMA HELPS THEM SING BACKGROUND. EMMA IS THE MAIN LEAD OF THE BOBBETTES
Can anybody speak/spell english anymore? WOW! Any-hoo...I am Mr. Lee aka Dr. Opto, my moniker is my actual surname and it's kind of funky that a song has been made (before my time) for me to use when I do my Hip Hop thing...I thank you "the Bobbettes in advance for setting me up with the Mr. Lee joint I'm gonna hit the world with (Hip-Hop/Doo Wop style)...get ready, here I come.
this is also my grandma and my brother is wrong his name actullay was mr.lee but the origanal song was i hate mr.lee but the group had to change it to mr.lee to make it radio suitable.
Thank You for posting this vid! My initials are M.R.Lee (way cool). My Mom and Dad were dating when this song was released in '57-'58 and his name was Robert (Bob). It is a series of events that made this song one of my mom's favorites but, mine also. At my place of work, when I have the chance to deal with the office staff, they sing this tune. I get gushy and red faced, but I love it. It is a fabulous R&B song that will always hold treasured memories. Again, Thank You. M.R.Lee
many thanks for posting this video...I have always wanted to see The Bobbettes...the one time I went to a concert they were on,
I got delayed and pulled up to the theater when they were onstage...I could hear them! but by the time I parked and got inside, their song was over. They sound
great here...I only wish there were some close-ups...there were five of them originally, and Emma and Reather were
No, the girls didn't love the school teacher, Mr Lee, they hated him and had to change the lyrics at the instigation of Ehmet Ertegun to make it sale-able.
No, actually, Mr. Lee was a teacher at their school that they really hated. They originally wrote I shot Mr. Lee in 1957, but the record company thought the lyrics were very mean for those days, so they had to change the song around.
wow that's pretty cool to have a family member that was in a band back when music was rockin. My mom was in high school when that song came out and she said it was so popular
I was in junior high when this came out. Your mom is correct....man-o-man this little tune was MASSIVE! I remember the kids screaming when the song's energetic introduction leapt out of the jukebox and straight into our hearts. There would always be some kids in the crowd who loved the 1-2-3 HEY! part and would scream along with it. Their zeal was a cute source of amusement for us little kids circa 1957-1958. Now if only I didn't throw away my felt circle skirt and crinolines. Let's dance!
na u dont kno wat u alkin bout lil buddy lol there orignal people are reather dixon and emma pought u have it backwards... they added the other people when they switched to alatic recrord...
Thank you for posting this video, My wife and I were at the wonderful concert at Springstead theater, I am Glad that Joe and Tommy are keeping the music alive, we try to attend all the oldie shows in area.. John Mooradian Spring Hill.

Perhaps they figured rearranging for four part harmonies would be economical.

This group was great when they first recorded, and they are just as great now!
They deserve to be in the rock and roll hall of fame, but they are too talented, and it seems they would outshine most of the inductees!
