ciggarettes add character. she was feeling pain, she felt the effects of nicotine, it's probably what kept her alive, ciggies do help through hard times, i know.
Her voice in this version reflects everything she's been through in her life. You can hear her emotions not only in the words but in her voice. It is magical
A good company when you feel tired of life and just want to lay back for a while and concede that "Yeah, after life so many years i still don't know life at all...."
Her present voice has the depth and fullness of someone who has lived, loved, learned from the ages. It suits the lyrics pitch perfect. Sure she can't reach the higher tones of her youth, but it is like face wrinkles; they make people more beautiful in so many ways. It evokes the feeling response in the listener that's any artist dream.
This version just simply blows out of the water every other version. It was never a pop, boppy song, it jusy happens to be a peice of art - and the lady has returned it now to where it belongs.
@sonners2239 i know its one of them moments that i just want to reach through the tv and hit him for being so horrible to her, but also on the scene its the way that she seems to try to just forget about it all! i guess thats what you do for your family
same me...very sad moment.....I think there is many women with the same situation....they want to give up they personal happines for the children....every time when i watch this movie..I cry with Emma Thompson...Great song, great acting of Emma, great movie....
fantastic!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!I was not even born then, but this is great, why dont we have music like tis anymore, are poeple too stupid and un- feeling???????
I think her "new voice" is great in it's own way. It has a new kind of power to it, very different from her younger voice. I love both of the them. Both of them are her, they just represent her at different periods of her life. I'll always love her I know that much.
this song is really so soulful, probably the lyrics or the entirety of the song was really so emotionally performed by Joni, The art and the artist matched perfectly.
@MsHburnett Hi :) I sadly have to agree with egillthor1, that in fact, after years of smoking, it leaves marks forever. But in this particular case, i must also admit that some good things came's out from it. That's what make her, her delicate "longsmokingyears" voice :)
@CritiquesMaster I couldn't agree more but let's face it. Her voice is magnificent now! It has a texture and a fullness she never achieved when she was young. Joni rocks!
@MsHburnett WTF are you talking about? I would start smoking three packs of fags right now if someone guranteed me I'm going to have a voice like that!!!
@MsHburnett Did she ?.....does your voice sound like it was when you were 20 ? ... Does your ass look like it was when you were 20 ( without cellulite ? even though though you don't smoke ? ), I doubt it ! Comment on the song and performance and leave your superfluous judgements elsewhere !!!
@thGory1 judements? I think more a statement if fact. As with Marianne Faithful with her heroin ravaged voice - still beautiful, but what a way to get there... and how would they have sounded had they not imbibed? I don't see negative comment here, save yours.
@MsHburnett she's about 70 years old and still alive... a fantastic musical gift to the world ,, and you bitching about her smoking now..? what about no smoking children dying from cancer.. marathon atletics killed in car accidents.. she outleved them... life is'nt a garranty , you can maybe better your odds.. but living life is dangerous..it kills you in the end.
je ne suis pas loin de penser que ce disque est à placer sur le podium de tout ce que la musique a produit de meilleur. Avec Rock Bottom de Robert Wyatt, A love Supreme de John Coltrane, et quelques autres.
I like this song because of death and love and loneliness and confusion and late nights in empty cafes and streetlights on wet pavement and cigarette smoke and life. and joni.
I've always adored this song, the music, the fantastic lyrics, the way Joni sang it back then and this version. The strings are sinfully beautiful and Jonis voice is so mellow with a jazzy touch. Pure enchantment and so mesmerizing, then and now.
The lyrics stand alone as pure poetry; for me they are the emotional education of a girl to adulthood and full acceptance of herself..... can't listen to it too many times...pure and beautiful.
Saw her during this tour, other than the two idiots behind me, who thought what they had to say was more important than a living legend 'giving it up' on stage...it was an amazing experience.
To see, and hear her, with full orchestra, and knowing that the guy Conducting was once her Husband, and now Arranger Producer...and that she does her own Art for Album Covers...( the self-portrait here is incredible...)
Satisfying to know they can still work together so beautifully
@slagmilkcard Are you kidding me?? Her voice has certainly changed, but still beautiful. In fact she may be an even better singer now than ever before. Her voice has a richness and texture now that adds even more to her songs. Joni is amazing.
@skdnow At least you replied correctly without the normal abuse you get thrown about on youtube. I think the passages of time have ravaged her voice sadly but I respect your comment :)
She is truly inspirational, I lost a child at 8 months and this song always makes me think of her and life after. It doesn't sadden me it just reminds me of life.
what an excellent choice for Emma's brilliant 'breakdown' in Love Actually....I only wish her scene was longer....never get enough of her....and with Joni singing, well, that's perfection.
A voice as full, varied and colorful as the orchestral arrangement behind it. Versions from her younger years can't hold a candle to it. The WHOLE ALBUM is EXCELLENT and has been since its release in 2000
i'm 20 and was hospitalised for 3 weeks over xmas for depression. I listened to this song every day hoping to find some truth in 'something lost and something's gained in living every day.' thankfully i am better now but this song still means a lot to me.
