To my opinion, this anime is only mediocre. The characters are great and well developed (the main characters, so to speak), but the storyline is rather horrible. It's rushed and fuzzy. The main idea is made, but then the story that develops with Kanade is horrific.
Kanade is a nice character with good intent. But her "pity me, people! I have no friends!" attitude is as annoying as shit. AND, Yuzuru just loves her at the end. But Yuri, a more humbly pitiful character just goes off without regard.
I freaking loved Angel Beats I didn't cry at the end but I was in this state where it felt as though my heat was in pain it was a fantastic ending for a fantastic series
this is easly one of my top 5 favorite anime the story characters the comedy in it absolutly love the music! opening and ending themes were awesome and i love Girls Dead Monster!
I finished the entire anime in one day. The ending made me really upset, and I was thinking "That's it?! THE FUCK?!". The ending was..blah... Knowing what know by the ending, it's almost impossible to re-watch it, and feel as happy as I did when I first watched it.
i love this show and i do not cry to any show besides this one mostly at the end i wish there was more like how there lives are now after coming back to life
I'd give this anime a 4.5/5. The only problem I had was that they didn't really open up other characters past and they really didn't get the spotlight, but other than that the anime was amazing.
@SonicFicticious Well, the term "anti-Christian" means that the entire show is against Christianity, that it's attacking Christianity or attempting to disprove it in some way. Just because one character disbelieves in God doesn't make the entire show anti-Christian.
Maybe I'm misunderstanding your use of the term, though?
Because time is retarded. I really don't know. Maybe some kinda mid-pugatory purgatory or some shit? They're dead. They can do whatever the hell they want.
It was P.A. Works and Aniplex who approached Jun Maeda, asking if he can come up with some plot for a mind-blowing anime that is "Key-like". At that time Jun Maeda has just finished the story plot for Little Busters, admitting he had already used up most of his creativity in that VN, thus he was having quite a writer's block and was reluctant at first. But eventually had an inspiration on the theme "Afterlife" from someone, and thus Angel Beats was born!
Agreed, they could've pulled off the same ending though, if they extended the length of the actual show, just so you get to know the characters more, then I bet they could've pulled it off with out it feeling rushed....
and make it so Otonashi didn't do that crazy hand scrambling after Kanadae disappeared.
I thought the review was spot on. I have to say I personally really liked the music though (I've had GirlDeMo stuck in my head for 3 days now). I never once felt like fast forwarding through the opening or closing credits because of the songs either and that's pretty rare. The anime really struck a chord emotionally and my only nitpick was that the last few episodes were uneven to me in terms of pacing (but that ending, oh man!)
Yea this was one of my Favorites. Other than that lag toward the beginning, this was really Great. A little short, but really great series. The only real issue I had with this was the ending, Felt like a cliffhanger.
I stumbled on the show in my instant queue for netflix and after watching the first episode I was hooked until the end. It was a beautiful piece filled with enjoyable characters, comedy, action and it had its tear jerker moments that really created one whole experience that was truly unique. Short and sweet, but I wouldn't have mind if it was longer.
Can anyone answer this? I don't get how Otonashi came 2 the high school after Kanade "when" his heart was used 2 extend Kanade's life yet Kanade is already there and has been there battling Yuri and the others! Someone please explain this 2 me!
@0mn1t0n1 No problem! There's no saying when one person will end up in the Angel Beats! world and when another will. One person might appear before another.
I give it credit since it actually made me cry I think this the only anime to make me do that I was like what the hell? And it had some really funny moments only thing it was too short and I wanted to know what happened after
i agree with u 100% on the art quality of this work! when I watched the first episode it completely threw me off, as it was so poorly made for 2010. After a friend recommended it I tried it again and realized that they just weren't consistent with their art quality but the story was extremely good!
This was the first of two animes who's ending made me cry. I've watched about 20 or so animes in my lifetime. This one, in my opinion, was a masterpiece.
The reason why it felt rushed it because of the huge cast. It was almost impossible to fully flesh out each character within 13 episodes. However that didn't stop them from pulling off an epic ending (very Key-like as well).
For some reason I love shading when it comes to art. The lighting in this was excellent just like he said. Also if you ask anyone who has seen it, you are definitely going to cry by the end of it. Whenever I hear the final song I get emotional
this is the first and possibly only anime im gunna cry over i just finished crying over it to think a 13 episode anime could have such a bigger impact on me then toradora which had an impact but not big enough to make me cry this is great i knew with how sad it is it would be by the same creator of clannad air tv and kanon
I just finished watching this series and damn it was a pretty good series for something so short. I'm usually a bit cautious in shows 13 episodes long. The music is ok but it's the second half of the show is where the plot went from funny to this is going to make me want to cry
Love this anime! It's one of the best I have seen, and dude don't worry, we are in the same boat the ending made cry I had to pause it for like 10 minutes and let it all out, and then I cried a bit more after I saw the ending scene after the credits. I was just left speechless, I never end up crying because of an anime!
I truly agree with your review, Angel Beats is a great Anime. Definitely my favorite show of the year, great characters, good comedy and plenty of action. However, you say your not a fan of the the shows OST, does that include the Girls Dead Monster music. GirlDeMo kicks ass. Oh well, still a great review :). Don't forget about the Special episode of Angel Beats when its released.
It was a good anime at first. However, when you reached the end, it sucked. All of a sudden, the angel loves Otonashi. And you're like, WTF?! Really, they barely knew each other. Part of it is disappointment that Yuri was completely overlooked for the girlfriend possibility.
@LoneWolfZakuro14 Acutally I have to disagree on this point. When I watched it as soon as they got to the point where kanade and otonashi were working together I knew it was going to be them as a pair, I think most of the yuri/oto sentiment was fueled more by the haruhi comparisons on her character then the actual plot. Not to mention there are many pairings in anime series where the chars know each other even less that work and aren't attacked.
@LoneWolfZakuro14 If you pay attention it's revealed that Angel lived for a longer period of time due to a heart she got from Otonashi. Yuri had been looked at as a possible love interest, but as Angel developed, Otonashi leaned more towards her.
@AnimeSodeska l bad, he obviously doesn't think so. He's prolly watched Clannad already anyways, and let me say i prefer Kanon and Angel Beats to Clannad. But meh, thats just me. This review is about Angels Beats, not Clannad. So seriously if you hated the anime why are you watching a review about it... Anyways, nice review! certainly got al the points out without spoilering. :)
I cried several times during Angel Beats... It's such a beautiful anime! The only issue I had with it was that it didn't explore all the main character's pasts.
Great review! I really wished they would've revealed more on Noda, Takamatsu, and TK, and really, the only thing that kinda bummed me out was that we never got a chance to truly "meet" all the characters and see their pasts. But overall it was great, and the ending was very touching. ^^
Angel beats rocked. Very little anime can get a huge emotional investment out of me and this did it. A great way of telling a tale and executing the various details to amplify the overall delivery.
