I LOVE YOU! I don't think I ever heard your music before, but I totally support you now that you have said that. You actually moved me for reals. I am going to tell people what you said, and you will have more fans now, thank you for saying that.
i can definately say that if i cant get most music for free, i wont get it at all. artists are just gonna lose a lot of great free publicity, and wont be able to recover that in album sales because, as i said, i wouldnt pay for 99% of the music i have, and i'm sure the majority think this way
@snowbegone People come to shows because they liked the music they hear on their pc/mp3 player. Who the fuck would buy all music cds of those american "stars" where always is 1 good track between 11 i won't hear at all.
Share music, share culture, share your style and support the artist you really love. As she says: Go to the live shows of your fav's - the rest is freedom of art.
question that fine an dandy for music but what about books and art?
when someone can just dl it and print it out why would they want to buy art or books?
same with movies why would they buy it if they can just download it?
movies would have to become live theater and painters would need to go back to painting on canvas...this is a technological step backwards? but hmm but it could be a good thing maybe??? but you wouldn't ever be able to live off it???
@sakonhagakure Hey. Hey. Leave (my guilty pleasure) Big Time Rush outta this. They are just like Gem; a musical group based off a TV show. They aren't bad live either. Granted, they don't write their own songs, but the whole TV show/music performance thing is a pretty cool genre.
@ShynAwkward Agreed but there's another sign of brainwashing. Man, if music is accessible to more people and more people get their hands on a good CD, they will be MORE LIKELY to come to a concert and bring the artist more money. Like it wasn't obvious enough for some.
The problem is that she can afford this opinion because she has already earned enough money through the business that she so despises. But can anyone please explain that theory to somebody who is an aspiring and earnest musician and who tried to at least secure his survival and support his little family with some music he makes when people like Joss Stone tell the world that it's ok to steal his musik left and right.
I think Record labels are afraid they are losing their job and the artist is becoming independent. The artist needs no more record labels to promote their music. They can make a song and put it online, if the people likes it, they'll go to their shows, brilliant, that's how the music is meant to be.
The trouble is she would never be where she is today without the music industry. I doubt she would be saying this if she was struggling to make a living from her musical 'talent'. There are plenty more artists out there who will never see their work rewarded.
Some don't understand the central issue here. She never says no one should paid for music, we all have salary or not? She says the music industry has changed and everything has become a BUSINESS. And that's the problem, now the labels do ANYTHING to make money, that's the ultimate objective of them. Instead artists like Joss has another aim, they create their art to share with others and as more people ENJOY with it, better. Obvious that all has his price, but that isn't the ultimate purpose.
money is destroying music, music is destroying society!
if music was free, I believe that only real musicians will make it.
with a far more productive ideas than the top hits from today. I agree with Joss! love your smile by the way. Im going to add you on facebook now hehehe :D
If she disliked the music industry so much, she wouldn't keep signing record contracts and giving them distribution rights to her music. She'd be uploading it to the internet herself for free. Yet she's still sitting there collecting her paychecks from the industry. It's easy to say you don't mind people getting your music for free when it's not you that loses out financially. This hipster bitch should use her brain before jumping on the indie anti-corporate bandwagon.
She's already made a lot of money and she has an established fanbase. She could ditch her record label and put her music out over the internet if she really believed that music should be free for everyone. It's a little hypocritical to say she loves piracy while she's still enjoying all the benefits of being signed to a major record company.
Here's what I love to hear! I would never boycott this person. This attitude is spot on. It's a good idea to allow a try-before-you-buy policy on music by sharing it. Let the artist attract customers by sharing. If it's good, they come, otherwise they go elsewhere. Like product sampling at a supermarket! It should apply to movies as well.
hey, money isn't everything...but then you won't be starring in concerts if you never get paid...ahem. shes got the right idea, but unless she has another day job...
Piracy is the best thing to happen to the music industry so far. Just think about it. It's because of these corporations that the music today has gone down hill. Maybe they will learn a lesson and actually start making quality music that's worth buying. Doubt it though, as they are greedy bastards.
@72issues most of the people that make music these days dont even write there own songs so what they moaning about and the money u pay for there cds doesnt even go to the band/singer it goes to the company and the singer/band have thousands of fans that pay 16 pound for there cds and they still wanna complain thats pathetic just 20 sold cds you get 320 pound most people dont even get that in a week
I just started clicking away at the buy button on ITunes for her songs. I've never heard anything she's done but with a statement like this how can I not support her?
i agree with her main points, but it is kind of a dumb argument to make when you will not have a show that people will even come to because the OWNER of the VENUE will not just have thousands of people show up, have to get tons of insurance to protect themselves against lawsuitsEtc
Yet, i understand the reason needed FOR the money, IS MONEY ITSELF. but the problem is we've tried having no money. it doesnt work.
we as bartering creatures would start assigning value to some other random shit.
Joss Stone.. Never heard of her. But, because she said piracy is great, that music should be shared freely, I have absolutely no problem anymore forking over my credit card to buy her CD. (Just not on iTunes.)
HEY EVERYONE JUST WORK FOR FREE OK? LETS ALL JUST SHARE. How would that idiotic statement make you feel? People try to tell me that my compositions should be free even though I spend money trying to promote, only to be stolen from. There are artists who do not do live shows, their sole income is with song sales. Don't worry sheep, Hollywood will choose your socialized music for you now. No need to seek talent! Just manufacture it. See the Disney kids dance? There are your future "artists".
@InhabitantOfUniverse Work for free? Do you think that´s what´s going on? Actors, directors, singers and all the big companies makes shit ton of money. They´re just mad that people can download stuff for free instead of paying a bunch of money to see a shitty movie, or listen to 1 or 2 good songs on a cd.
Money whores, that´s what i call them. Luckily there´s people like this that cares more about music and joy and not about big fucking money.
@Muscle4LifeX Yep, thats true. They are the ONLY ones making money now. Hollywood needed a way to exclude real talent, to get rid of the lesser known rising stars. Free music downloading accomplished that. Only the giant record companies and well known artists make any money at all(most signed artists just go into debt though). Real talent stopped going to Hollywood, and that gave less talented people the opportunity to sell their soul for fame. Joss is an OK singer at best.
@smarta800 And indeed that is what artists and musicians are doing, myself included. Not getting paid for something that used to be a profession. That is why you have tv stars instead of actual musicians in Hollywood.
@InhabitantOfUniverse I don't listen to the radio or watch tv so I really don't give a shit what's on there. There are plenty of people out there making good music. Do what you love; you only live once.
See that's the brilliant thing about someone saying the things she's saying. Paradoxically, I actually want to buy her CD now, because she's being honest and genuine and showing us that she cares about her art first and foremost. That's the difference between a real musician and just another celebrity in the spotlight.
"The only part that I dislike about music is the business." 10 seconds later: "As long as you come to my show." No business=no show you nitwit. Besides, it's easy to say this when your contract's already signed.
@dumbnetworks I get the idea of free music and free shows, believe it or not. If you believe that Joss Stone would happily tear up her record label contract and give her music away for free then you are pretty naive. Oh, and since you're sinking to puerile name-calling: "I know you are but what am I?"
@MrSimpsonSimpson music will finnish being a big cash money making machine, like it or not, I will steal music whenever I can and share it with others.
@MrSimpsonSimpson Free sharing = increase of awareness = more fans = more people going to shows = more business. Pull your head out of the big corporations butts and think. Do some research, know the facts. It has been proven endlessly that piracy helps all artists in every field on every level.
@JeffHopkins8@dumbnetworks At what point have I stated that I am behind the big corporations? All I've said is that I don't believe for a second that Joss Stone would happily subscribe to a world in which she doesn't get paid for music sales.
Jeff, where did you get this research from? I'd be interested to read more. Can you provide me with a link or the title of a book documenting these facts?
@MrSimpsonSimpson Cant post links so, Google "ign is piracy good?" should be first post. Then Goggle "torrentfreak top 10 most pirated movies of all time" also should be first post.
We are moving into the digital age, and the best thing they can do is share their content, because at the end of the day, if the product is worth someones money, and they have it to spend, they will most likely buy it. Instead they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to stop something that makes them money.
... aaaand that's probably why she left EMI, and made her own record label. I'm sure they are pissed that they got used as a springboard, but on the other hand, she might get payback by watching her fans steal her music back from EMI. I wonder if that's somehow related to the guys who tried to rob and murder her?
Same here with me. I'm working on my own Flash series, and I don't care how people see it, I just want them to see it. And do you know how many page views are racked up for videos related to Jeff Dunham or My Little Pony.
Piracy isn't bad and i explain you why, piracy creates a balance, i can assure you there will be always people willing to pay for music and movies, as there are people who download things but also buy some of the stuff. The industry will never go bankrupt as there will be always people willing to pay, piracy has been there for almost a decade, have you seen any artist going bankrupt due to piracy? I DON'T THINK SO! :-)
ya la queria antes de esto ahora la amo aun mas sera que es perfecta Joss?

I think every artist should decide for themselves if they want to give their work away for free. Piracy robs them of that choice.

The people that complain the most about free music are the ones who can't perform live.
Think about it; touring is where the real music money is made in 2012.
Joss can sing, but those who can't sing or play/perform can't fill a venue & therefore cannot make fortune, except through publishing & advertising...
2012 = Time to separate the real talent from the studio fakers!

You are a patronizing idiot.
Having a "good CD" has nothing to do with being able to perform live.
If you can't really sing, rap, DJ or play an instrument, then you have no business being on a stage & charging people good money.
Please shut up, you clearly know nothing about the music industry!

Muscle4LifeX 1 month ago
@Muscle4LifeX Yep, thats true. They are the ONLY ones making money now. Hollywood needed a way to exclude real talent, to get rid of the lesser known rising stars. Free music downloading accomplished that. Only the giant record companies and well known artists make any money at all(most signed artists just go into debt though). Real talent stopped going to Hollywood, and that gave less talented people the opportunity to sell their soul for fame. Joss is an OK singer at best.

@InhabitantOfUniverse If you like to make music or art you will make it. . . even if you don't get paid. Fuck greed and fuck you! <3
smarta800 1 month ago
@smarta800 And indeed that is what artists and musicians are doing, myself included. Not getting paid for something that used to be a profession. That is why you have tv stars instead of actual musicians in Hollywood.
InhabitantOfUniverse 1 month ago
@InhabitantOfUniverse I don't listen to the radio or watch tv so I really don't give a shit what's on there. There are plenty of people out there making good music. Do what you love; you only live once.

As long as you visit concerts, exhebitions and movie theaters on a regular basis, online media piracy is cool...

Awww, I think I'm in love!

MrSimpsonSimpson 2 months ago
@MrSimpsonSimpson You can make a show and make no business out of it, idiot. and she gets it, you don't
dumbnetworks 2 months ago
@dumbnetworks I get the idea of free music and free shows, believe it or not. If you believe that Joss Stone would happily tear up her record label contract and give her music away for free then you are pretty naive. Oh, and since you're sinking to puerile name-calling: "I know you are but what am I?"
MrSimpsonSimpson 2 months ago
@MrSimpsonSimpson music will finnish being a big cash money making machine, like it or not, I will steal music whenever I can and share it with others.
dumbnetworks 2 months ago
@MrSimpsonSimpson ever heard of open air shows? you dont pay a ticket, no ticket = no money and no money = no buisness
koldproxy 2 months ago
@MrSimpsonSimpson Free sharing = increase of awareness = more fans = more people going to shows = more business. Pull your head out of the big corporations butts and think. Do some research, know the facts. It has been proven endlessly that piracy helps all artists in every field on every level.
JeffHopkins8 2 months ago
@JeffHopkins8 @dumbnetworks At what point have I stated that I am behind the big corporations? All I've said is that I don't believe for a second that Joss Stone would happily subscribe to a world in which she doesn't get paid for music sales.
Jeff, where did you get this research from? I'd be interested to read more. Can you provide me with a link or the title of a book documenting these facts?
MrSimpsonSimpson 2 months ago
@MrSimpsonSimpson Cant post links so, Google "ign is piracy good?" should be first post. Then Goggle "torrentfreak top 10 most pirated movies of all time" also should be first post.
We are moving into the digital age, and the best thing they can do is share their content, because at the end of the day, if the product is worth someones money, and they have it to spend, they will most likely buy it. Instead they are spending hundreds of millions of dollars to stop something that makes them money.
JeffHopkins8 2 months ago
She doesn't care about the money, she cares about getting her music to be heard. That to me is hard to find today.

... aaaand that's probably why she left EMI, and made her own record label.

Ask her if she should play free shows too. Same shit. She could stay in her home town, work at Mcdonalds , and play for free.
