If you wear shoes, there is less resistance between your foot and the pedal board. Allowing you to play faster. The swivel is for balance to maintain the motion.
Thanks, that was really helpful. Ive been trying to find some better techniques to play the double bass beat at the beginning of "A Nightmare to Remember - Dream Theater" because the technique i was using before i wasnt keeping a steady beat, id get off beat or i wouldnt hit some of the notes or my calf would often cramp up. This seems to work much better and now i can play the song easy. Thanks.
@Leilita86 uuhh... not really sure what you are asking. this is an electronic drum kit. it is a yamaha dtxpress but that particular pad is a roland kd-8 i think. it is all generally interchangeable. you should be able to google this info.
every single day i try to learn how to play the double pedals but i just can, i watched about 50 of these videos but still im unsuccessful, i really dont know what to do anymore :(
Just keep doing the left-right-left-right.. And like when you start learning how to play drums. Slowly add the right and left hands. I started out by doing it without the drums, just to get the feeling of it, and then afterwards moved on to doing with the drums.
damn i must be an oddball then, cause i picked up what this guy is doing on accident plus a little bit of swivel(basically a mix of the 2) and my springs have like 0.01 tension and very high tension bass drum head.
very nice i do somesthing completely different and use a 24 bass drum and the mallet hits the head twice and i use both at the same time and alternating the ball and heal its way harder to learn. the head on the drum has to be low tuned and the mallets have to bounce to double stroke the leftheal leftball rightheal right ball. this is much faster but hard to control i like yours better...
Hey, about why they wiggle their heels left and right when they play fast, I'm almost certain that it's because it helps them keep time. Makes counting easier at a quarter speed of their notes :)
Hey, thank you a lot for sharing this. I've been looking for an explanation like yours for long time. I think this is the technique of Alex Rudinger and Anup Sastry, am I right? Thank you!
@DrumStudentNegative1 very sorry but unfortunately I am having trouble remembering who or where my very first student would have been. first ever ever ever? that's actually a group of people simultaneously as far as i can remember. a whole percussion section. so privately then... first paying student? first student at a school? first student at a store? in my house? at your house? there are a few ways to qualify very first. glad you were happy with the result though!
@mpsecare most people feel like they are middle of the pack. Not super cheap but most people wouldn't call them top end either. They've worked for me though.
Awesome video man, it helped a lot! On a side note, how do you get your left pedal for your double bass pedal to stay there? When I'm playing, it tends to move away from me?
@molomono ok, duly noted. This is a different technique then. I still hold that if it helps you to swivel do it, if it doesn't then stick with this. The swivel is just an extension of this either way. Even of it is twice as fast, you start from the same place.
The swivelling foot motion is not a floating heel technique. It's a different technique that takes advantage of more dead spots in your foots motion.
When your foot is moving up and down you only hit the drum every other time that your foot reverses its motion.
When swivelling EVERY time you reverse the motion of your foot you can hit the drum. So even if you are swivelling slower you get 2 times the opportunities to kick. That's why it's so fast.
wow, sums it up pretty nicely. this technique came almost naturally to me when i picked up double petal, after 7 and a half years i prefer single for the most part but usually using the floating foot on single also
i could be mistaken but are you using iron cobras?
all i did was adjust the spring tension, and i went from about165 BPM to about a solid 200 or so BPM by just following this technique for 10 minutes! i KNEW something had to be wrong with the tension!
@3ijitproducktshins this is actually a good thing. it will go away with practice but it means you are essentially using the right motion. see the response video i posted for more on this exact shin-muscle topic.
@SuperAli1996 Ive watched a victor wooten workshop and he said something about acquiring techniques. He said that the more you dont think of your instrument the faster you would learn it. If your conscious about what you are doing the slower your progression would be. Hes saying like learning it unconsciously I guess then he asked someone to slap and pop while they're having a conversation. I hope this make sense. It works for me I practice my instrument always infront of the TV.
@SuperAli1996 there is no way to know that because it really depends on how much you practice, how good you are now, and how ingrained in your current technique you are at the moment. If you are very close to this and practice 8 hours a day, it could be a couple days. If you are a beginner or even a pro but well versed in some other bad habit.... and/or only practice once in a while, we could be talking years.
@jmdenogean this sounds better than heel toe. It's more consistent. Double strokes are cool on theory but they don't really sound even enough for most actual playing situations. Unless you have triggers. Which I don't.
hey guys i been playing drums for 2 and a halfh years and i been using the pearl P-902 dubblepedal and i feel that i aint geeting any better whit it. should i get new pedals ore stay whit the P-902?? :)
@MrDiamondGray I don't know what women you have been looking at, but the woman that has my hands and feet would be effing ugly. I feel bad for her. My foot is a US size 14 if you convert to women's. They don't even make women's shoes that big in most brands.
@raokin466 I start with shorter bursts of 4 notes, then 5, then 6 and so on until its continuous. Also just playing slow-fast-slow like rudiments helps a lot.
@0509killer I could make a video, but really just do two strokes like this on the same foot. Done. There is a slide technique for two notes on one pedal, but at this point I can play singles fast enough that 2 singles is equal to or better than a slide double and I don't have to change my foot position on the pedal.
@Benanterips I don't know about the whole heel touch thing (sounds fishy), but otherwise I completely agree, tensing up never helped anybody do anything on drums for more than a few seconds. Relaxation is key.
Great explanation! I FINALLY got this technique down after years of trial and error. One thing that helped me was to tap my heels on the ground with every stroke (Jason Bittner). Another thing if you don't mind me adding is to relax your muscles. They should not be super tense. And use the rebound of the head to help your next stroke. The harder the ankle stroke, the harder the beater will hit the head, and the better rebound you will get. Start as slow as you can go using your ankle muscles.
@thefeeez21 when I was touring a lot I played in skate shoes exclusively. Now I still prefer shoes with thin flat soles. Wrestling shoes are in that category, though I've never used them.
When ever I try going past the 16th note speed and up to 32th notes a.k.a demisemi quavers I belive, my legs seem to have to tense up lots to make the movement smaller in order to get up to speed. It kinda works but my calves soon start to burn and I can't keep it up for long, I think I need to use less leg and more ankle like in this video, I really want to make my drumming more efficient as my arms and legs tire out to fast when playing fast.
ive played in my socks for years now my left foot is still retarded.. so i just picked up some wrestling shoes and the feel is just weird to me but i see it being done a lot so im gonna try to get used to it what... any thoughts anyone?
@speedcoregewalt it will be more difficult for sure, but the thumb and index fingers are the most important fingers and every successive finger is slightly less important. So ring and pinky should be less of a concern than the rest. Why are we talking about fingers anyway?
dammit, i wish i hadnt fucked up my left hand with skateboarding (watch out for torn vehicle registration plates, they are sharp). is it worth the effort to learn playing the drums, because i have scar tissue over the sinews of my left pinkie and the finger next to it, right under the knucklejoint
I loved the way you articulated how to do this! I'm going to try it, even though my size 12 feet don't exactly fit very well on my DW 9000's. I know it's going to take a lot of practice, but I'll give it a go.Thanks man!!!
@yuuabvabv to make a stroke I use the micro muscles in my ankle and obviously some of my calf/Achilles, but the part that actually feels the burn is the shin muscle on the front of the leg just below the knee. Preparing for the next stroke on the way up is the part that usually takes more effort.
@purestwrath that's your opinion, this is my opinion. If that works for you do it your way, but I can play plenty fast and loud without slapping and this is how I do it. This is also how I teach it hence the video.
The "slapping" you're referring to is similar to dribbling a ball. And, althought you don't let go of your sticks, when doing finger style technique, you're kind of dribbling the stick with your fingers, at least at higher tempos. The dribbling effect increases power and is very important at high speeds.
I don't care what other drummers might same about the video, but as for me, I consider it worth sharing for...what good a drummer is if all he does is show off and brag..
@MetalSt4r I just looked up a couple videos on the "flat foot" technique and if you want to call this flat foot, sure, go right ahead. This is similar enough to what other people are saying that you could consider it the same thing. Those other guys use the word floating a lot in their descriptions of what flat foot is so the idea is right there.
@Deathblow85 not sure what you mean here, but this floating technique is only for single strokes. I think I agree with you in that its for really fast parts of course.
Thanks for this instruction - A lesson well learned for me - It has helped alleviate my cramp and given me more speed - rock on

@welder7809 I have size 12 feet also, I don't think that you will have that much trouble because of it.
ryukintakeda 2 months ago
I loved the way you articulated how to do this! I'm going to try it, even though my size 12 feet don't exactly fit very well on my DW 9000's. I know it's going to take a lot of practice, but I'll give it a go.Thanks man!!!

@yuuabvabv to make a stroke I use the micro muscles in my ankle and obviously some of my calf/Achilles, but the part that actually feels the burn is the shin muscle on the front of the leg just below the knee. Preparing for the next stroke on the way up is the part that usually takes more effort.
ryukintakeda 2 months ago
awesome!! which muscle do you mostly use?

@purestwrath that's your opinion, this is my opinion. If that works for you do it your way, but I can play plenty fast and loud without slapping and this is how I do it. This is also how I teach it hence the video.

nicko always plays bearfoot! XD
14razgriz 2 months ago
The "slapping" you're referring to is similar to dribbling a ball. And, althought you don't let go of your sticks, when doing finger style technique, you're kind of dribbling the stick with your fingers, at least at higher tempos. The dribbling effect increases power and is very important at high speeds.

I don't care what other drummers might same about the video, but as for me, I consider it worth sharing for...what good a drummer is if all he does is show off and brag..

i thought this was the flat foot technique?
MetalSt4r 3 months ago
@MetalSt4r I just looked up a couple videos on the "flat foot" technique and if you want to call this flat foot, sure, go right ahead. This is similar enough to what other people are saying that you could consider it the same thing. Those other guys use the word floating a lot in their descriptions of what flat foot is so the idea is right there.
ryukintakeda 3 months ago
@ryukintakeda ahh i see.
MetalSt4r 3 months ago
@ryukintakeda i concururur, normally he plays singles yes, but as he explains on his dvd, he does use floating technique for really fast parts
Deathblow85 3 months ago
@Deathblow85 not sure what you mean here, but this floating technique is only for single strokes. I think I agree with you in that its for really fast parts of course.
