this is so nostalgic, I picked this video up out of a bin when I was 4 years old and my parents bought it. Since then we've watched it every christmas and despite the fact I'm 19 now and have pretty much out grown it this movie just warms your heart, plus the songs never go out of style.
I remember Mr. Hooper...until I was six that was the Christmas special, where the show began when they were skating downtown, then Big Bird went to wait for Santa but missed him. Then the presents were still under the tree at Gordon and Vivian's place (gee I wonder how haha). Also, Gordon and Vivian sang that song "True Blue Miracle."
In this day and age I am pretty sure this would be obsolete. Meaning it is not politically correct to showcase christmas with out showcasing the other holidays....amazing the stuff that used to happen back in the day.
See here in Australia, we don't really have other holidays which are officially' recognised, so on TV eveything is branded as 'Christmas....' although we do see happy holidays and seasons greetings.
THANKYOU!!! For decades I wondered if I somehow imagined this special. The one thing I remembered vividly was Anne Murray singing her then-current hit "You Needed Me." Now I'm going to look for the part with her. Once again...Thankyou Thankyou Thankyou Very Much!!!
I remember watching this when it aired, and being confused for years afterward when I didn't see Anne Murray or Leslie Uggams in the reruns. Turns out those reruns were actually "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street"!
When was this made? When was this shown? Before or after the Xmas Eve special?

It was thoughtful of them to let Big Bird know how much they hated the hat, so they could sing the song about crappy presents.

I have that hat!! I'm really glad she doesn't pretend to like it, though.

Great to see this special on YouTube. It's a shame Sesame Workshop won't release it.

So, what's so bad about this particular special?
Treknologist 4 years ago
The newer one with Elmo is actually pretty good...except for that song Kevin James sings as Santa....
LaDracul 4 years ago
To be honest, I think this is better than that "You Gotta Believe" song from the "Elmo's Christmas Countdown" special.
Though in that one, Stiller the Elf believes that Oscar has the most Christmas Spirit due to a survey. Oookaaay...

Seems like 1978 was a banner year for horrible Christmas programming on CBS - the infamous "Star Wars Holiday Special" aired the same year!

The guest stars are AMAZING. I can't believe they got Leslie Uggams AND Dicky Smothers!!!

Yeah, good thing they were available.

Was this the special where Cookie Monster eats the Christmas tree at the end-or did they have several christmas specials?

You're thinking of "Christmas Eve on Sesame Street" which is 1000x more worth watching than this.
