My 100hz Trinitron finally died. I went looking for another CRT monitor that would do as well (1280x1024) and there really aren't any. The more recently manufactured ones (that would still be functioning today) are more like 85Hz.
iv bought a pair of wired edimentional 3d glasses but when i hook the monitor lead through the provided adapter to my nvidia graphics card i get an error on my monitor looking like this:
Attention Out of Range H31.4khz V171.4khz
Can anyone help me with this problem iv looked everywhere to no avail and was looking forward to trying these out.
My pc is running Xp pro sp2 1gig ram 3.06ghz cpu, nvidia geforce fx5500 zoostorm crt monitor any help appreciated.
3D systems that use glasses with shutters don't work with LCD /TFT displays because the refresh rate is randomized, meaning the glasses cant be synced properly.
thats why they're bringing out new 3D-Tv's, they have OLED displays that have a constant refresh-rate so 3Dtv and gaming is possible...
Unfortunately, the 3D monitors and 3D televisions that are currently being brought out do NOT have OLED displays -- they have LCD displays. That results in ghosting.
To all of you who are considering getting eDimensional's current 3D glasses system -- wired or wireless -- do NOT get it.
eDimensional's current system is many years out of date -- from 2003 -- and does NOT allow for a digital video connection.
Also, none of eDimensional's current drivers are good.
Until eDimensional fixes this -- which probably won't happen soon -- stick with other S3D systems. The best affordable one currently available is the Zalman Trimon monitor.
An E3D clone ("x3d gaming system") is available new on amazon for $11. I'm using them and there is some ghosting on my Trinitron CRT at 100Hz; I don't have the E3d glasses to compare against though.
To test if your game is going to work, you don't need to buy the glasses. Just install the Nvidia stereo drivers and see if you get two images on the screen when you run the game. The dongle is just syncing with the video. It's all about drivers. I'm running on Win98 on my desktop with a Nvidia 5500 and the Nvidia stereo driver is a little unstable. The iZ3d drivers work on my Vista laptop (7000), but only in interlace mode. XP is supposed to be best.
LCD monitors almost always have a max vertical rate of 60 Hz, with maybe one mode that will go to 75 Hz. My Canopus Total3D shutter glasses from 1991 required 85 Hz. There are only a couple models out there that can handle 120 Hz, and they are currently $250. The good news is that the current "losing" systems (iz3d and Zalman) have dropped to the same price, and they don't need shutter glasses, just cheapo polarized ones. But they have some ghosting and only have Vista drivers.
And I should have mentioned that the iz3d and Zalman require TWO dvi inputs, which I guess is normal for the nVidia cards (>=8800 I think) that do this kind of thing. And maybe they do have XP drivers -- there is mention of it on their sites.
The statements that you made about the "iz3d and Zalman" are ONLY true about iZ3D, NOT about the Zalman Trimon monitors.
The polarization technology that the Zalman Trimon monitors use is completely different from that of the iZ3D monitors, and the Zalman Trimon monitors do NOT have those weaknesses. The Zalman Trimon monitors do NOT require dual video inputs, they use circular polarization, and ghosting is very minimal.
Also note that although one major review says that with Trimon monitors, there are more "lines" visible than with an "ordinary" monitor even when the glasses are off, I and others have found that that is COMPLETELY untrue.
Another advantage of Trimon monitors is that they support horizontal interleaving -- which is one of the standard formats for stereoscopic 3D content. Because of that, you can even use the ED drivers with them -- even with a DVI digital video connection.
I have a 22" Zalman Trimon monitor (the largest size available), and it is currently the best of the affordable stereoscopic 3D viewing systems.
In fact, at least at the present time, it is in many ways even better than the nVidia 3D Vision system, because it supports full-screen interleaving and has less ghosting than nVidia 3D Vision does with LCD monitors.
will it work with any game at all, if i buy a pair for my media computer in my living room?? since ive got it hooked up to my tv through vga???, can someone please message me about it, thanks
I'm not sure, because I've been in occasional contact with eDimensional and they once told me that it will NOT work with a plasma display because the scanning is not correct.
Anyway, it is NOT a good idea to get the current eDimensional system -- it is old and outdated -- with NO support for a digital video connection. eD has told me that they are at work on a new system -- but until they release that, stick with nV 3D Vision or the Zalman Trimon LCD monitor.
Here's a VERY helpful piece of advice for you and others:
Next time you get a computer monitor, BE SURE to get the 22" Zalman Trimon monitor (the largest available).
Apart from "3D Ready" TVs -- which are very expensive -- the Zalman Trimon monitor is the best stereoscopic 3D viewing system currently available. It uses circular polarized glasses, so it has full color quality just as LCD shutter glasses do.
And it's particularly good even for non-stereoscopic purposes.
@9kolajbertelsen Just use one of the DVI-VGA converters that came with the card :) You should have a spare vga cable that came with your monitor. So thats DVI-VGA on output of 3d card, and vga cable from output of dongle to monitor.
VGA is always analog, but DVI can be either analog or digital, although DVI is usually digital.
The ED system REQUIRES a VGA connection. That means that whether it's analog or digital DVI, for it to work with a DVI output, you have to use a converter that converts it to a VGA -- analog -- connection.
Although you can do that, the video signal the monitor recieves will still be VGA -- analog. That's the point that I was making.
In addition to buying the 3D glasses at EDIMENSIONAL(dot)COM, you can buy "TrackIR 5" at: NATURALPOINT(dot)COM. You can buy great software at: FlightSim(DOT)com and at: FSPilotShop(DOT)com
I tried very hard to get E3D to work with my laptop. **IF** you could get the "clone display" to actually put a signal on the external VGA connector, it would work, because the dongle for the glasses is very much output only, mostly just looking for vertical sync. But the drivers are too smart for their own good; they want to have a conversation with the monitor. I searched for a dongle that would fake a monitor, but couldn't find anything.
Also, the dongle is what does line-blanking and sync-doubling.
eDimensional has told me that they are looking at the possibility of releasing a new system that uses a USB dongle. That would be fantastic, because it would allow for ANY type of display and ANY type of video connection, analog or digital. Unfortunately, however, ED is probably not going to be releasing such a system soon.
Also note that ONLY the old-generation nVidia S3D drivers work with ED -- NOT 3D Vision.
What in earth is all the flickering ? How do you stand it. Its been a good while, so now you can tell the truth, did it flicker or didn't it flicker.. The glasses recomend 100hz monitor, and I'm sure not many Lcds where made for it..
I have done extensive experimentation and research into that and here's the answer:
When current display technology is used with LCD shutter glasses:
If you are using a CONTINUOUS display (such as an LCD monitor or television), for there to be absolutely no flickering, the refresh rate has to be 120 Hz or higher.
If you are using a PULSED display (such as a CRT monitor or television), for there to be absolutely no flickering, the refresh rate has to be 240 Hz or higher.
I have a read alot of reviews and most of them (almost all of them) were negative. They said that first of all the glasses don't work with all the games. It works with SOME of the old games like Halo, Ghost Recon (the 1st). Also the glasses are made out of cheap plastic and alot of people were having problems, they were seeing alot of flickering to the point were the game became unplayable. There were also alot of technical issues. So at the end I decide it not to buy them.
works badly with lcd because the refresh rate is usually only 60hz where as crt are high like mine for e.g. which is 85hz (refresh rate is the speed at which the monitor flickers)
Exactly, I had a pair of these when they first came out and and I was running them on a normal CRT @ 1024 x 768 / 85hz, This wasn't enough to evade the darkness and flicker, but as soon as I brought a better monitor with a way higher refresh rate it worked perfectly as you stated.

@MatthewBryce
Incorrect.
LCD displays, like other displays, DO refresh at a constant rate -- but with varying pixel response times.
In the past, LCD displays did not have fast enough pixel response times to work with shutter glasses, but today they do, although not very well.
The eD glasses DO work with LCD monitors. I have them, and have used them with LCD monitors.

nvidia's 3d vission is allot better and free...well you need to have an nvidia graphics card which most of us do.
Diegog5 2 years ago
nVidia 3D Vision ABSOLUTELY is NOT free.
With it, the system itself costs almost $200, and on top of that it requires a "3D Ready" display -- which most people DON'T already have.
barichm0 2 years ago
NVIDIA 3D VISION DISCOVER is completely free as long as you have any Graphics card 8800 and above.
I think you are talking about the bundle which it is really expensive.
Diegog5 2 years ago
NO, I'm talking about the nVidia 3D Vision LCD shutter glasses viewing system.
The system ALONE is almost $200, and the bundle -- which includes BOTH the system AND a "3D Ready" LCD monitor -- is almost $600.
Although NVIDIA 3D VISION DISCOVER is free, NVIDIA 3D VISION DISCOVER uses colored glasses -- which, as everyone knows, messes up the colors.
Colored 3D glasses are one of the main reasons that stereoscopic 3D entertainment hasn't caught on until now.
