"The Divine One" had such a magnificent voice -- such range and depth. But this video was not shot in 1990, This is from her performances at the "Satin Doll" in Tokyo in 1985. Her last performances were in NY in 1989. By 1990, she was too ill to perform. She died in April 1990 of lung cancer at age 66. A sad, sad day for the world of music.
That wonderful woman is one of the jazz artists who inspired and influenced Amy Wonehouse, and I just can say ... we understand why Amy was such a phenomenon. Her voice, her moves ... she totally reminds me of Sarah Vaughan.
Hey, I’m a young artist, & I would really appreciate it if everyone would check out my cover of Michael Bublé’s “You’re Nobody till Somebody Loves You.” Although I’m knowledgeable that Michael Bublé was not the first to record the song, my version was inspired by his rendition, nonetheless. I promise you that you will not regret giving my version of the song a listen, & it will truly knock you off of your feet! So please listen & enjoy! Thanks!
She is just simply one of the best soulful jazz singer that I love though am just came to know her from her singing on the Beatles' '' Somehing " ... RIP Ma'am
Wikipedia says she died in April 1990 so if 1990 is the year of this performance it was done during the time she was receiving chemotherapy, not more than a few months before she died. Thank you for posting.
This is just plain spot on perfect. A superb performance, and I appreciate the Erroll Garner inspired treatment by the pianitst. She puts the soulful passion into the song that so many other vocalists miss. Nothing like classic jazz at its best.
Incredible, amazing, sensual, just perfect. THANK YOU for uploading. This is one of the (many) reasons I love You Tube and people's generousity with taking their time to share something wonderful with the rest of the world.
This is not 1990. She passed in 1990. I saw her last performance. She looked nothing like this. She looked very different from this. She did, however, sound the same...beautiful as a bird!
what a great legacy and a great treasure your mom shared wiht ya and i think its a part of your culture too,be proud of it.enjoy it as much as you can.
to have those days back with my mother listening to Ms. Vaughn. So thankful I have these memories.. At an early age my mother, (Ms. Jazz herself), shared all the greats with me. Being able to access and enjoy these videos is awesome.
Gosh! I'm a tenor and she reaches a note almost as low as one of my lowest notes. And she sings with such humour and playfulness! Only Sarah makes me laugh while singing. She's miraculous and joyful!
All that is true, nosferatu, but for me its her tone, great expressive phrasing and intuitive timing that I value most. She caresses those emotionally important moments in a passage, and yes - there is humour here as well. Get the Billy Eckstein impersonation from 3:11? It's him alright.
She made me want be a Jazzsinger, after I discovered her voice. although I listened to other Jazz Vocalists years before. I love 3:54 "On my own" lol :) Sarah, please send me some signs from up above because I feel you as you were right next to me, whenever I'm listening to you. I love you.
@jiedeng18 She's better than Ella. Ella is incredibly clever in her scatting, but Sarah is passionate and soulful. Her music effects the listener emotionally. Other than Nancy Wilson, I've never heard anything like it.
Pure magic was Sarah Vaughan in concert always...sublime performance of Misty always one of the many show-stoppers and this legend is the greatest voice ever...from small to large venues, this lady was a stunner...Bravo Sarah!
Misty and in love is one of my favourite songs, Sarah really captured the true essence of the song with her varied tonalties. Theres not many voices like hers now a days thats for sure.
you explain it very well: tosing is one thing .. but to bring a song exactly to the center of it ...THIS is art! and this is what you feel when you are listening music. itis true, pure and does not need much tecnical surrounding. if you have "it"... welll.. sarah da it. and a lot of people here does feel it too. so THIS is the essence of a song you hear and feel in your heart.....
Can't believe that Sarah died the same year of this performance because of lung cancer. DAMN! No sign of illness in that voice...just an aged vintage instrument that's been used extensively. BUT STILL maintained the SARAH essence. She's my new musical idol!!!!!!!!
2 versions nr one is from ella and secondly, but veryclose sara voughan. both are so talented, maybe ella was bit better, but this ismy opition.and i - as a jazzsinger by mysef - would have been more than thankful to be pleased with a voice like sara.. even mine is very close to hers..
she has amazing breathe control! 2:12-2:30 in one breath she goes from nearly the top to bottom of her range! amazing and sitting on a chair like its nothing! go ms. vaughn! her resonance! is amazing!

My unshakable atheism has a hard time accounting for the transcendent Sarah Vaughan. There is little explanation other than she was sent from heaven.
