Hey there! Very cute video! I've been looking to get a Pionus for a long time, but I'm very hesitant when it comes to breeders. I was wondering if you could tell me where you got Otto? He is a gorgeous bird and seems to have a very sweet and gentel disposition. I would really appreciate this, thank you!
The most important thing to keep in mind when buying any bird, especially any bigger than a parakeet. Find a reputable breeder that takes their time with them. Otto's breeder was as good as you could find... and it really showed in his gentle temperament.
Pionus are considered on the quiet side, but mine still had their active time of day. Usually for about 10 minutes or so in the morning and the same before the sun went down. They are usually silent during the evening and night time. Otto, the blue head, wasn't as noisy as TJ the Maxi Pi. That said, they don't make as much noise as a parakeet, and aren't as loud/shrill as a lovebird.
woow you must have a good life with birds, i would love to have birds when im older and moved to my self and change work so i can take care of them :)
I'm for sure going to continue to keep my birds feathers trimmed every so often(3-4 months). Don't need that happening to mine! Safest for them is in their cage, so many dangers await them outside of it. Though expensive but I'll wait till I can affford a flight cage for them. Anywhooo, I already have 2 amazons, 1 macaw and a african grey, I just bought a blue head pionus, she's two months and will be able to come home in 6 weeks when she's done hand feeding! So excited!
sorry guy when did it happen? triming the wings is the only save way my 2 birds are trim but not enough cause i want them to fly in the house smoothly but not fly too much.hey sorry how many birds do u have n what are they?
never force a bird to shower whats good is a water bottle with a soft mist n they will love it after a few try.my pionus loves to be in the shower n he open hi wings n start showering its cute n funny.
Poor guy was the last of his clutch to get adopted out. The breeder cut me a special deal if I wanted him. In the end, he wasn't a bad bird, I think he needed to be someone's "number one" bird. I'm hoping that's how it is in his new home.
i got Otto from a private breeder in Southern California. Her name is Jan. If you google search Pionus Parrots and Jan, you'll be certain to find her.
Great Parrots. I have a Poinus myself for the last 14 years and she has been a wonderful bird. I just uploaded a video of her chewing on my wife's pen. Our's only likes to be misted with a spray bottle. However I once had a Patagonian Conure that loved water and would hope in the sink to bath.
I agree that I wasn't particularly gentle with the 2nd bird. Yet, by his lack of biting me, you can see that he was willing to tolerate it. They didn't usually get showers in the sink. About once a week they would take a trip to the regular shower.
I'm so sorry to hear that. It can be rather distressing when a pet escapes. I still have two small birds that can fly, and I constantly have to be on guard when I go outside.
I enjoyed! What cuties! Isn't it strange and cool how your channel is evolving, and covers so many fun topics. Parrots. Art. Funny animation. And that just names a few.
They have a "great natural smell" when wet? Hum... I'm not sure I can take your word for that... Our budgie STINKS after showering! (Though I don't tell him, of course, I tell him he smells wonderful...)
@KutWrite - Well, mine smells like wet wildcat hair in a crowded bus after his shower. But it only lasts for a very few minutes, as he dries very quickly.
@canadianstudmuffin Think long & hard B4 you get a parrot. They're *extremely* long-lived -- about the same avg. life expectancy as humans. And they need *much* intellectual stimulation & interaction because they're *very* intelligent. Sort of the chimps of the bird world. Lots of parrot rescue work out there because people grew tired of their long-lived parrots. I've never had one, but have enjoyed seeing others' parrots.
@kylethehedgehog101 - No. They live longer in captivity due to no predators & less stress from weather & unpredictable food. They live so long because their cardiovascular system is set up for flying.
I’m from Barcelona/Spain, hear, some escaped from the local zoo, and they have adapted to the city, so now we have parrots all over the city, it`s awesome to see them fly free, they fly in triangle formations. Only issue is they fight pigeons, parrots are territorial, but seagulls are the real bad ass ones, no parrot or pigeon flyes down near the cost.
@bowlingballout If yo like them, take a look to videos from Barcelona, there is a population of over 2.000 flying free, and they are social. They build huge nests were they live together, I did not find a video of them flying, but is awesome to see them for a building roof, they fly from uphill all the way down to the ocean in big groups of over 20/30 parrots. I love them, as long asthey dont nest by my window ;-D

I had him in a portable cage outside getting some sun. All was well for the first hour, I went out to give him a treat and he'd managed to free himself. His wings were fully grown in and he was a good flier. I can hope that someone found him, but I tend to doubt that.
My mom got a double yellow head parrot in 1984. Way before any of the current importation laws. When she got it, it had no feathers and we had to feed her every few hours with a spoon.

Also I have another question, how loud can the parrots be?

Awh! So beautiful! I love birds! I really want one, and I can't wait to get one!
RIP Otto
Why did he only live 3 years though? I thought birds were supposed to live a LLOOOONNNG time.

I made the mistake of allowing him to be completely feathered, and one day he escape from a cage I used for his time outdoors. I never saw him again.

They're great... but unless you have a lot of room, I suggest sticking with smaller birds. Large birds make large, daily, messes.

I agree with you about wings needing trimming for pet birds. Once slip up and most likely they are gone forever.
We only have two small birds. A parakeet and a lovebird. Contrary to the norm, they get along quite well.
