I guess compared to the Bee Gees, the Kinks were a little better. The Kinks were always about lyrics and music, so I would put "Superman" above most of the disco-driven work of the Bee Gees.
WEW!! YOU really got me goin~~~~~ Fantastical energy received from this gift and share. Thanks M.A. for this rendition of PURE ENERGY OF LOVINGNESS. MY answer to your query is a resounding: YES YES YES YES. <3 U Dear Friend. :-)))
The Kinks created this song in 1964 ! Van Hallen played it in 1978... Eddie Van Hallen was a very great guitar hero, but not a genius like the Davis Brothers.
@MrCCRFan Those of us who have been Kinks fans since 1964 would never consider '77-'84 their best period. It's simply absurd. How many of their greatest songs/albums were recorded then, compared to 1964 - 1975???
@StevenTut many more !!! tell me, when are the songs sleepwalker, low budget, superman, pressure, do it again, think visual, lost and found, give the people what they want, Oh my good i could tell you many more, written ??
this time was professional - more than in the 60's.
but the 60's were great too ! and i think the kinks in every era where great.
@MrCCRFan Saying '79-'86 is your favorite Kinks period is one thing. Claiming that their albums/songs from that era are better than '64-'72(Something Else, Village Green Preservation Society, Arthur, Lola vs Powerman, Muswell Hillbillies) goes against virtually every published opinion by rock historians, writers, and critics worldwide, as well as the vast majority of Kinks fans. You're only 15. It's really fantastic that you appreciate the Kinks but you have alot to learn yet. Do some reading
@StevenTut Oh Oh your right in this thing i have to say - BUT: I RED VERY VERY MUCH about the kinks (and other things)
but musically, i guess, your right, that me most people thing this wasnt as good as their early time, because many people thing, e.g. word of mouth (the song) is only a boring guitar lick song with unseriously screams.
@MrCCRFan Actually, their "golden period" is considered to be '67-'72, because of the amazing creativity of the albums they released. I saw Ray Davies in Buffalo, NY last Sunday and he really put on an incredible show. Had an excellent backing band for the Kinks rockers - they simply blistered "You Really Got Me"! At 67, Ray hasn't lost anything.
because of the EXCELLENT alvum Face to face which i love.
Ray has lost nothing indeed, but maybe sometimes dave on guitar isnt there (and you notice that...nobody in Ray's backing band has this aggresiv guitar style like dave, but thats not a main thing, so who cares, AND:
I presume by the stage antics (playing to the audience) that this is a show in the States? It's alright but a little too 'showy' for my tastes. Ray's doing his best Jagger impression strutting about the stage like a rooster on coke but I prefer the earlier live versions (pumped up 80's Rock just isn't my cup of tea.)
they did a lot of their concerts faster than the recordings........don't know if it's adrenalin or drugs....but when you're there in person, it doesn't matter
@ all the "VH's cover is better" one-line wonder toads--
To each his own, but childishly stating VH's version is better is just ignorant & lacks insight
VH can only mimic The Kinks' genius--I mean, this song is from FRIKKIN 1965! It was ASS KICKING ORIGINAL. There'd BE no VH version if not for The Kinks.
The Kinks are revered for their contribution to Rock--their originality, versatility, breadth of talent, which has endured for 45 years--with their fan-base still growing!
@ledzepp063 When I saw them (I think it was 84') David got down on his knees like that twice and just put his guitar out there and let a bunch of people up front hit it while he continued to play, it actually sounded very cool.
Of course none of them just grabbed the strings like that douche did.
The Kinks are still to this date, one of the best bands I have ever seen live, and I have seen a ton of good shows.
Now that I think of it, David put his guitar down during the solo for "All of the day and all of the night" and also let the fans hit the strings while he played.
Awesome song. Love this version. But dude... If I was on stage playing a solo, and somone reached up and touched the strings... I would kick them in the face. Like really.
It seems to me that The Kinks should be wise enough to know by now that if you're excited and as exuberant at what you're doing, the audience is going to feel that vibe, too, and be EVERY BIT AS EXCITED YOU YOU ARE. The gentleman who played the guitar solo was kind of mean...if you run up to a bunch of fans (especially young ones) what do you expect them to do?? Sheesh!!
@MissWhisper2Me I don't think he was mean - all he (Dave Davies) did was push his arm away and then step back. What's he supposed to do? He's done that a solo a million times without someone messing with the strings no matter HOW close he gets to them. The guy was kinda dopey... and probably drunk...
Oh for all you young idiots out there...you always thought this was a song by that lousy group Van Halen???? Oh no no no.....now you can see what a '60s band can really do. Screw Van Halen and have some respect for the Kinks.
@Ajwmsaguitarman yeah ok ass breath. I've been following music since around 1956 and I dont know what rock is. Do some research on the Golden Age of Rock & Roll and then come back and talk to me after you've changed your fucking diaper.
Anyone know where this was recorded? The Roseland Dance Hall NYC on New Years Eve 1984? Unless that girl poking at Dave's guitar followed Dave from town to town screwing with his guitar licks, that is the New Years show they put on. I was just in back of her, and she was really plastered. That half H set up,, which they used on that entire tour, did kind of lend itself to people grabbing and so forth. Anyway, lived to tell about it.
@MegaRussellC82 This version is from the "One For The Road video Album, which on the VHS tape says Providence RI, 1979.
The vinyl / CD version of this same album uses an entirely different live version of this song, though. In fact just about all of the tracks from the "One For The Road" album are different from the "One For The Road" video album.
@alexn882 Yet you notice how cool Dave was -- he got out of the situation instantly and did not make a big deal out of it or wreck the show for everybody
@alexn882 Probably the same thing the knucklehead that I saw at a TALAS / Yngwie Malmsteen show in 1985 in New York was thinking. "How can I be an assh**e?" During Yngwie's set this kid in the front row tried to take the bandana wrapped around Yngwie's ankle almost making fall backwards! When Yngwie composed himself, he took such a kick at this kid's face he looked like a field goal kicker going for three points! The kid was lucky Yngwie missed him or else he would have been in the ER.
Whoa, this version is totally bitchin'...but the one that's on Battlefield: Vietnam is even better since it has an incredible opening riff. Anyone know where it came from?
it's on the 1980 live cd one for the road. this was some of dave's best playing. his tone rips. if you ever see the rockpalast dvd from 1982, he tears into pretty good as well. i picked up the guitar when i was 14 because of the 1980 cd version. learned that intro fairly well. it's not that hard. just use a les paul with a peavey heritage or triumph, & you can get that tone. i've gotten into trower, zep, bonamassa & hendrix more, but the kinks stuff is always good to hear & play. they rule live
glad to help. i remember the morning i first heard it. i was getting ready for school at 7am, radio was better back then. i was blown away. that intro did it for me. been playing ever since. the cd is still in stores or ebay
You hear the 80´s Rock Music Version - I think?! The original version is the Beat Generation - is another speed --- music gets faster and faster...like the humans life... ;-) :-) I think Original is the best!

I was around( Junior in High School) in 1964 when the British Invasion hit America.
Music was boring with American Bandstand rock stars lip syncing to the songs.
These groups came over and were exciting, had long hair, wrote their own music, played live.
The Beatles, Stones, DC5, Kinks, Cream, Jimi and then USA Groups, Beach Boys, Doors, Janis and many more were on Ed Sullivan every Sunday Night.
It was a great time to be young!!

Whoa, this version is totally bitchin'...but the one that's on Battlefield: Vietnam is even better since it has an incredible opening riff. Anyone know where it came from?
And cocaine is one hell of a drug...

it's on the 1980 live cd one for the road. this was some of dave's best playing. his tone rips. if you ever see the rockpalast dvd from 1982, he tears into pretty good as well. i picked up the guitar when i was 14 because of the 1980 cd version. learned that intro fairly well. it's not that hard. just use a les paul with a peavey heritage or triumph, & you can get that tone. i've gotten into trower, zep, bonamassa & hendrix more, but the kinks stuff is always good to hear & play. they rule live

Holy shit, thank you SO much for the info!
I found the mp3 (thanks to usenet) and now I'm off to find a physical CD. Gotta support good music like this :)

glad to help. i remember the morning i first heard it. i was getting ready for school at 7am, radio was better back then. i was blown away. that intro did it for me. been playing ever since. the cd is still in stores or ebay

You hear the 80´s Rock Music Version - I think?! The original version is the Beat Generation - is another speed --- music gets faster and faster...like the humans life... ;-) :-) I think Original is the best!
