Sephiroth was a General for Soldier and was considered a hero and wasn't bad...he went bad when he became confused about his mother and learned of what Soldier created him to be. He then went mad and attacked Cloud, Zack, and Tifa and Cloud killed him. So he wasn't fully bad he just got confused and got mad. In FFVII, you fought his clone.
