  • IT'S EASY U-TUBE OR LIVE...........LUDWIG WINS HANDS DOWN...why even ask... and I'm not ignoring the fact that one is metal and one is wood

  • Ludwig

  • PEOPLE, DROP THE DUMBASS COMMENTS ALREADY!!!! It's makes PERFECT sense to compare these two snare drums. Saying otherwise is completely illogical and invalid. If I'm trying to decide between a wooden snare drum and a metal snare drum, then clearly I want to hear the two side by side. If I'm picking between two different drums, then clearly I want to hear them side by side. Stop being fucking stupid and get some common sense.

  • Those are both excellent drums that are totally different in both composition and sound.

We all know that wooden and metal snare drums sound different.

Why waste time making a point that everyone is comfortable with?

  • why the hell would you waste time to compare both snares? It's like comparing a floor tim and a 10"inch tom completley different timbres.

  • Wood is best, both brands make good snares!

  • I like wood.

  • sonor.

  • @rockeroftheband1 because it is tuned higher

  • I think that it's nice to hear the differences between metal and wood snare drums. I don't think he's trying to show that one is better than the other. I've only had metal/brass snares, but have always wanted to try wood.

  • You cant compare metal to wood its not a fair comparison

  • @metalopolis1 Yes it is. Dunno where you get the impression that it's not. What if I can't decide between a metal and a wood snare? A video like this is going to help me with that decision. To say that you can't compare wood to metal is a completely uneducated statement.

  • They are nothing alike you cannot compare them its like comparing a Pearl Reference to a DW Collectors they are of completely different nature because of shell construction i mean even the edges are of different degree there is nothing fair about it

  • @metalopolis1 Dude are you stupid or something? You compare the sounds of different drums and drumsets regardless of shell construction. If I'm trying to choose between a Pearl Reference and a DW Collectors then obviously I want to hear them together. That's the fact of the matter and you can't say anything that will contradict it.

  • I like the metal one.

  • Both make great drums but for the cost of the product, Ludwig is the better choice, the Supra-phonic is a legend!

  • giwdul-ronos...Now Play it backass, The sonor is a high grain forest wood, w/ die cast etc,BELLS AND Whistles for thousands - Great Drums.. Yet the simplistic straight ahead Luds ALWAYS WERE THE BEST ...

  • Not a very fair comparison.

  • Sonor has more tone, the Ludwig is.......

  • One is wood and one is metal.

  • sonor wins

  • the ludwig has a fuller soud

  • @TheSaxplaya1 Yes it does!

  • VINTAGE LUDWIG'S still show how superior craftsmanship +superior performance

=a product that today still kicks major top brand ass in sound and play and resale

value..Ludwig Supraphonic..the vintage Cadillac of class.

i have played on ALL makes,model's.. low end and high avail to me!!!..Metal's,Alloy's,Wood's,Fiberglass, Plastic's,Acrylic's,Composites,ETC...

unless i am after some weird off the norm snare sound..LUDWIG has it

covered..so,yes i am the proud owner of an 1968' vintage Supraphonic.

  • ludwig ftw!

  • @jesamani75 SONOR FTW and ludwig

  • The ludwig was a lot of a softer sounds, good for jazz, the sonor seemed to pop more and have a more open tone, like for metal or rock.

  • Ludwig :)

  • Sonor!!!

  • sonor

  • The only way to do a fair comparison would be to tune both drums exactly the same and use the same heads. These were tuned to two different pitches, so the result of this test is inconclusive. I do own a 6.5x14 Supra-Phonic and love it to death though.

  • @rockeroftheband1 thats because its tightened up higher i think

  • ludwig snare is great, but i personally like the sonar better.

  • which sound do you like? Up to you

  • Ludwig all the way

  • The best test omparision between two snares drums, that I saw in You tube.

    Congratulation from Argentina -Willy

  • good olllllle Ludwig

  • artist maple

  • Sonor!

  • I own eleven snare dums, including a 14*5 SQ2 maple, a DW Edge, a Noble & Cooley SS maple and a Tama Starphonic bubinga. The Starphonic and the Sonor snare have, to my ear, the perfect blend of focus, body, resonance and crack. Sonors are not cheap but they sound, feel and look like a million bucks!

  • hmm

  • definately steel

  • LUDWIG in my opinion.

maybe because i play ludwig and i'm biased but who cares Ludwig rules.

  • if i HAD to pick, i'd go with the luddy. my favourite snare in the whole wide world is the 402 supraphonic. good enough for bonzo... good enough for me. (i like ringy)

  • @ChroniclesOfSpring Heck yah all supraphonics are amazing except foreign made.

  • Different sounds...metal and wood... but Sonor is no joke. I have heard a Cottonwood snare and was blown away. Ludwig makes the supraphonic, a must have. But sonors brass and wood drums are as good or better.

  • how did you tune the metallic one?? why does it sound deeper than the wooden? isn't it backwards?

  • ludwig!!!!!!!!!!

  • SONOR DE A WIWI

  • I know these are two differents snares with nothing in common. In fact, the idea was to compare wood and metal. Ok, the title is wrong. Sorry.

  • They both sound great. But in all honesty, it's not really "fair" to compare these two snares because one is made of wood, and the other of metal...Also they look to be different dimensions. The sonar is a deeper shell. So the sound produced by both the drums is obviously going to be different. Still good sounding drums though.

  • Sonor

  • Two really different snares, two really different sounds. You have to compare apples with apples.

  • ludwig ftw

  • LUDWIG.

  • how can you compare steel to wood!! and ludwig!!!

  • Yeah, that's where I am with it.

  • ludwig!

  • Personally i would rather have a metal drum then a wood 1. now if u were to compare this ludwig and the Sonor cast bronze snare it would be way diffrent

  • Comment removed

  • ludwig is better in my opinion

  • I think Ludwig have always made the best snares but you can't compare metal with wood. it sounds to me like they tried to make the Ludwig sound better though. I love my snare drums and have Sonor and Premier now. and an old marching Ludwig.

  • I agree with the other comments. If you wanna compare two different companies, you need the same type of drums. Comparing a maple with a steel snare is not the way to do it.

  • alles ne frage der stimmung von der snare, ich fin Sonor besser !

  • why sould you even compare the 2?!?!??!? lets see, heres a lamborgini and heres a porche.... umm both cars... both good, NOTHING in common

  • ludwig

  • sonor!!!!!!!!!

  • not a good comparison, its metal vs wood. Apples and oranges really.

You need a Sonor shell that is the same material as the Ludwig to make a good comparison. Personally to my ears, metal snare drums always sound better.

  • ludwig!!!!!

  • Ludwig is better!

  • Both are real nice sounding well tuned drums. Its funny that the sonor is a new state of the art drum, and the ludwig that has not been changed much can still hold its own.

  • Sonor!!

  • ludwig sans réfléchir,il y a pas photo !

  • Las dos son buenas. no se pueden comparar dos redoblantes de distinto material...

  • LUDWIG!!!!!!!!!!!

  • LUDWIG!

  • Definitely the Ludwig.

  • sonor got my vote

  • Sonor!

  • ludwig

  • 0:40 what's that drum in the middle? the one inside your shirt?

  • @CloggedLacrimalGland it's the same kind bonham and moon had on their latter days... ha.

  • @ChroniclesOfSpring ........

  • Sonor takes it this time.

  • SONOR, SONOR, SONOR!!!!!!!!

  • Ive always like my snare drum to sound sharp and crisp. So I would have to go with the Ludwig.

  • SONOR!¡

is the best but i prefer the birch

  • Both sounded lovely, so I'd go with both.

How is that Supra tuned? Sounds awesome!

  • Ludwig man , Ludwig! :)

  • these are 2 different snares all together...metal vs what i'm guessing is a maple ...and the sonor seems to be a 5 1/2 x14 whereas the ludwig is easily a 5x14..so you can't really compare the 2..but i'm a ludwig man so........... and by the way DB prep8..if you're thinking that the ludwig is aluminum, you're dead wrong..acrolites are aluminum, not supraphonics !!

  • New Supras are Aluminium, older ones ae "Ludalloy", an alloy of steel and aluminium, so they're bound to sound a little different. Acrolites are the same, old = "Ludalloy", new = aluminium. The shells are almost exactly the same, not everyone can even hear a difference between the two.

There were/are some COB Supras floating around, too, but I'm sure you already knew that...

  • well fuck me !!! your right !!! well, at least i have an old classic !! but i still can hear a difference in tonal quality between the old and the new supras..!!

  • Yea, it's old vs. new that you can hear the difference between, (generally) not Supra vs. Acrolite. Sadly, an Acrolite has never graced my ears in the flesh... err... metal(?). Anyway I tried a genuine '70s LM400 in a music shop in London and it blew my mind. Unfortunately, so did the price... Ah, I'll get me one one day... perhaps the LM402 though.

I've also tried a Ludwig 300 series Bronze 6 1/2" and a Brass 5" and they were also pretty amazing, for the price. Got the Bronze on my Xmas list!

  • My uncle has a 74' acrolite, sounds friggin' sweet.

  • Yea I'd love one of those, too ;)

  • @blica1 Supraphonics and Acrolites have always been made with exactly the same shell (in the beginning sheer aluminium, and at some point ludaloy= aluminium+steel), the only differences are Supras are chromed and drilled for ten lugs. period

  • @mellilore Yeah my late 70's pointy b/o badge Acrolite is amazing! I use it for all my recordings and gigs (keep in hardshell case). I always get complimented on snare sound.

  • @TehDeejus I own two acrolites, mid-60's aluminium keystone and 70 ludaloy pointed blue/olive, and if keystone is more than plain good the blue/olive is absolutely terrific, its crack cuts throu anything and it's very very sensitive at the same time. Perfect powerhorse and multi-purpose drum, some years ago it was by far my favorite.

I also own 4 supras, a keystone one (chrome over aluminium), 2 pointed blue/olive (chrome over ludaloy) and 1 mid'80 large keystone (also chrome over ludaloy).

  • @mellilore Nowaday my darling is the '60 chrome over alu Supra, I find it has a more complete sound due to the chrome. But Acrolites have always been beyond any doubt incredibly great drums, maybe kinda overlooked.

    Cheers

  • Both are good, But sonor has much too high pitch for me.....so LUDWIG IT IS!

  • Ludwig.

Sorry Sonor, I still love you! =(

  • sonor, absolutly

  • sonor for me...more definiton and attack

  • LUDWIG OWNED

  • Ludwig..........for ever

  • ludwig

  • Sonor...more complex sound

  • Sonor

  • sonor for me =]

  • sonor, more body and depth.

  • Sonor!

  • there both good it depends on your taste

  • Ludwig!!!

By the way, don`t compare a steel and a wood snare...

  • I would go for Ludwig too..

But yur right, don't compare a steel and a wood snare...

  • I don't really get the point of this either. He should be comparing the Supraphonic with a Sonor Phonic or Ferromangan or something at least similar in nature. Then there's the issue of the different tuning on the two drums (the Sonor being higher).

    Apples and oranges.

  • Maybe he was just happy to show his snares...

  • yeah I guess so ...

  • its aluminum not steel

  • stuff is purple

  • Ludwig...

  • Sonor for the win

  • supraphonic

  • ludwig!!!

  • Sonor!

  • ludwig

  • neither one is better than another one! Both of then are great, both of them have very wide tuning range, from both of them you can get perfect sound that you want...Some people will hate me because of this...I had supraphonic in my hands and I made a test;basix custom birch snare 14x5,5 VS supraphonic(same tuning, same drum heads,no moongels, zerorings, tapes on a drum head).CHEAP LUDWIG GOT 98% IDENTICAL SOUND LIKE "GREAT" LUDWIG SUPRAPHONIC

  • LUDWIG LM 400!!!! PERFECT

  • Perfect in what way? Both are great! Why Ludwig? I have both!

  • Soohnor! Beautiful finish, sensitive modern bright sound with good rimshots and 24 steel wires thank you. Supra can be had cheaper thou and eBay is the graveyard of luds.

  • ludwig

  • If I had to choose - Sonor.

  • ludwig

  • Ludwig is more "Vintage" as oppose to Sonor which is more for Rock, Blues, R+B, etc
