A memorable scene from the most memorable movie! Leslie Howard was the perfect Ashley Wilkes. Tyrone Power was offered the part but turned it down. Ty was too handsome and dashing for this part. He would perhaps have made a good Rhett had Gable not been available, but Leslie Howard was perfectly cast. What woman would not want a husband like Ashley??
Why do women find emotionally abusive, attention-whoring, dramatic women to be positive influences? HELP ME UNDERSTAND, INTERNET. (For the same reasons men find other men with the exact same but masculine-version characteristics to also be role-models.)
@ThatsNotPoetry Probably because screwing people over to get what you want out of naked self-interest is considered by thick people to be the embodiment of the spirit of independence. As opposed to just being dickish behaviour...
I think that was intentional. The film seems to be aware that while Scarlett and Rhett have good in them, they are at times the most spoiled, whiny, selfish, and manipulative people you would ever see. However that's what makes them so entertaining to watch (particularly when together) and makes their positive elements shine all the more. Scarlett holds her family together and Rhett's willing to help others when the time comes and he doesn't put up with nonsense.
Cracked is right on the money with this one..... although I feel somewhat sorry for Scarlet because Ashley's so much of a worm he leads her on. He needed to be firm and maybe even a little hateful with her so she'd leave him alone.
@buckinghamalice Agreed! I could never stand her even at a young age. All the bitching, melodramatics, and seducing just got on my nerves. Thank you Cracked for finally providing a much needed medical diagnosis! Now get this shrew some meds!!
You know, people always thought I was crazy when I said I didn't find her particularly admirable. Thanks to Cracked, I now know I'm not the only one to think so. =P
@buckinghamalice she got on my nerves from the start. the bitch went around stealing men, engaged men, no less. She always had to be the center of attention and that is why I disliked her. I loved Rhett from the start, though.
The trouble with Ashley is not Ashley ... it's Leslie Howard, an actor in his early fifties who was playing a 25-year old. Selznick should have found someone else to play him. Ashley represents nostalgia for the dreamy, moonlight and magnolia image of the old South. Rhett represents the harsh reality of the new South. Ashley should have been played by someone just as attractive as Clark Gable. Otherwise Scarlett's passion for him doesn't make sense, and we run out of sympathy for her.
Ashley wanted Scarlott's body, but loved Mealonie for her heart.
Rhett admired Mealonie but loved Scarlett.
Scarlett was infaturated with Ashley, but she never did love him, and never understood him like Mealonie could.
Scarlett thought she despised Rhett when all along she loved him; she thought she won by defeating him, but then realized that she had lost completely by losing him.
@carnationcorsages He admired and loved her spirit and strength, but he wasn't IN-LOVE with her for it. He thought he was and so did Scarlett - but they both realized far too late that the ones they were in-love with were two different people.
some of the best acting she does in this entire piece. Her insistent pursuit of her objective through so many different but utterly believable tactics is remarkable.
Scarlett is just so stupid falling for a married man. Melanie only believed Scarlett was kind, because she did not know how much of a liar and slut she was chasing after her husband. It's no wonder Rhett left her at the end of the movie.
I had the hugest crush on Ashley when I as a kid, oh my!!!

It hurts when you love a man and can't have him. Especially one as fine as Leslie Howard.
