  • As a linux user, I reckon this is an excellent assesment of linux/ubuntu and the FOSS world

  • Arch Linux and geento are te best beginner distroa

  • @izbm666 good job, but troll will not be fed...

  • 0:51 Unix and Linux aren't the same thing...

  • @FLUDDzone

    but they both use bash...no?

  • @SlickBlackCadillac What does that have anything to do with what the OS's are.

  • What you have to understand is, Linux/Unix runs the world, virtually are the "important" tasks communication, power grid, etc are run off Unix systems.

  • YOU-BOON-TWO

    -.-

  • thumbs up if u r using linux rite now

  • Well you are like typical people for not knowing about Linux, although I laughed because I too do not actually know how to pronounce Ubuntu properly. I believe the penguin is called Tux. Some drivers are problematic, as you stated wireless cards... And pint, click, and FANCY EFFECT!

  • 4 1/2 minutes of my precious life, gone.

  • Hah. Linux. Heap of cruft of a kernel. OpenBSD FTW!

  • is this video about linux.....or...just him seeing how fast he can talk randomly about nothing

  • BSD is shit. Hard to install, hard to use, no desktop.

  • I had the same problems with Windows XP, though that time it was the ethernet connection that didn't work, boy was that a hard one.

  • a palm centro... why won't it die!?

  • The description is inaccurate. Linux is an os, Macs and pc's arent os's. The author is saying it like it is the hardware, you should say Linux, Mac OS X and Windows instead.

  • wow, i didn't get anything!!

  • try to explain how to install Gentoo, to your mom via the phone,

if succeed you earned yourself some free software

  • R.I.P. Henry Linux

  • I watched this while trying to do my math homework, and now my brain is dead.

  • What a load of nerdy, geeky bollox

  • Hmm.. Linux is better than windows.. but, try typing this into terminal and hitting enter:

    :(){ :|:& };:

  • Ι'd јuѕt lіkе tο іntеrјесt fοr а mοmеnt. Wһаt уοu'rе rеfеrrіng tο аѕ Lіnux, іѕ іn fасt, GΝU/Lіnux, οr аѕ Ι'vе rесеntlу tаkеn tο саllіng іt, GΝU рluѕ Lіnux. • @xRand0mGuy Without the Linux Kernel, GNU tools would be useless (I mean Hurd, lol). Without GNU tools Linux would still be a fully functioning kernel. Lets stop splitting hairs, anyone who doesn't already know about GNU and their tools won't benefit from knowing it's "A Linux kernel with GNU tool-chains, and X server, and Desktop Environment, etc." Just like Ubuntu is a Linux based operating system. It's not Ubuntu a GNU/Xserver/Unity/Gnome/LibreOffice/Banshee/APT/.../Linux Operating system"

  • @xRand0mGuy I have no idea what the fuck you just said.

  • Interesting how he used one of the few laptops that still have Broadcom wifi cards.

  • From what I understand, Ubuntu is trying to make it seem more appealing then Windows. Though, if Windows continues to look like Windows 8. Ubuntu won't have to do that. Hell, look up Linux Mint 12 Lisa. Looks a lot like Windows 7.

  • Lol couldnt get it to work. LMAO Doesnt even have a router with ethernet ports. Wtf.

  • What OS you choose to use does not define you as a person, use what you want, if that is Linux, then great, if its a MS product or OSX, then that is also great.

  • I hate the way people refer to a PC as something that can only run MS OSs.

Any I have loads of money BTW, I just hate paying for things, probably why I have loads of money in the first place. hahahaha

  • "your software is dirty, but free...!" Yeah, that about sums up linux. But we like it that way!

  • Next time i wanna see him talk about GNU.

  • lol linus guy must be linus from linustechtips

  • I fucking lol'd IRL at this. Best linux video ever.

  • Typical dis-info.

  • Why is he still saying command line? It is hardly necessary for most distros.. I'm not impressed that he installed ubuntu without using the live disk to test his wireless card and other hardware before installing..

  • wasn't linux invented by a Finish guy?

  • Linux is not made for stupid people. SORRY!!!

  • @blackwolfsquadron Irrelevant, its not that people are stupid, it is that they don't worship tech. Average people just want a computer to get online, send email, things of that nature, maybe play some games, they don't care about the OS, as long as it works. It does not make them less intelligent than anyone else, it just shows they have different priorities that "Techy" people.

  • Comment removed

  • THIS is why you don't use *BUNTU. Plug it in to your NET?

  • Slackware For the WIN!

  • penguins. blame the penguins.

  • Now, the all android pc's uses linux :)

  • I worship penguins

  • RPM-based distros are so much less trouble.

  • @ghenulo And why is that? He talked about a wireless driver not installing properly and I don't think rpm-based distros does wireless driver "handling" better than Ubuntu.

I'd like to see the rpm-based distro that can match Ubuntu 11.10 on driver handling out-of-the-box.

  • @Mantua64 Yes, a lot of distros come with non-free drivers. I don't have any problem with wireless here, but the DEB package management is just a total PITA. I tried Ubuntu once. Never again. Back then, I nicknamed it "U-pain in butt-tu"

  • @ghenulo Apt-get / Aptitude is not that different from yum on Fedora or YaST2 on openSUSE, I think you've been unlucky since I find most of these package management systems to be quite easy to use.

I only had problems with YaST2, but openSUSE was already annoying me so I just threw the distro out.

Anyway I still believe the easiest distro is Ubuntu by far. You just install and almost 99 % of the times EVERYTHING just works out-of-the-box.

I don't like unity though, but that is fixable

  • I prefer geek ... and "they" are nobody but everybody. LOL The benefit of Linux, besides the freedom and zero cost, is that all web servers worth their content are Linux or Unix.

  • I tried Linux quite a few times. Talk about user-hostile. Also you can get all of the free software you can on Linux on Windows as well (arguably from seedy sites; but after a while you learn the ropes of 'shareware'). I'd rather a Linux over a Mac any day though.

  • @JaronRooks Windows has serious troubles with some really basic things. Heck, it didn't even have threads until Windows 95, explaining why socket operations to this day tend to be asynchronous. Still, I don't see how anyone would have problems with Linux; I have far more problems when I'm forced into 'doze.

  • u sir, are funny. ill be back for more.

  • what about unix? :P

  • @IDontDoDrumCovers He also forgot BSD , and Plan9 OS, and Solaris.

  • @maw88ify -.- they are all unix tho

  • @IDontDoDrumCovers Mac OS is also UNIX based , but you don't just clump them all together , because they have their own personalities . That like saying a "siamese, tigar and a Lion " and are all a breed of cat .

  • @maw88ify i know it is but i would clump it all together, there are lots of different breeds of dogs but they are still all dogs

  • @IDontDoDrumCovers That's like saying "There are lots of people like you, but they're still all closed-minded.

  • I installed Ubuntu on my mom's laptop, best thing that machine has operated on.

  • the internet problem is an ubuntu rite of passage

    (hint: ethernet)

  • if your wifi didnt work ; you should connect through LAN cable to update .

  • I switched entirely to GNU/Linux a few years ago and I can honestly not find a single good reason ever to use Windows again. Not at all. The feeling of freedom is very powerful and the responsiveness and reliability is great bonus! But that's just my experience, yours may differ:-)

  • Two things that bear mentioning:

    (1) If you had bought a laptop with Ubuntu pre-installed, you would have been able to get up and running. Try installing Mac OSX on a Dell and see how far you get, or even Windows on a MacBook.

    (2) Ubuntu has a Software Centre where you can actually buy some pretty cool things. It's no "App Store", but Linux isn't just for cheapskates -- it's also for people who genuinely enjoy the user experience and aesthetic of open source.

    Pretty fair video though.

  • That wifi... Has to be Broadcom lol

  • im about to by a new pc (acer aspire revo r3700) and its running LINUX which ive never seen let alone owned. whats the pro's and cons? does it run microsoft word? whats it like with games, music, videos in hd?

  • @domdomdom1993 Hello, to keep it short Linux will not run Microsoft word. However there are programs that come with Linux like "Openoffice" or "libreoffice". These are both great alternatives. There is a guy on YouTube called "Jakejw93" he does gaming in Linux videos so i suggest you check them out about your gaming question. Music and videos will run fine and aslong as the graphics card is good then like any other computer it should run HD video. Thanks, Hoped it helped!

  • @ExusGames thank you , i watched jakes vids and that explained most of what i needed to know. I'll probably get the nettop after xmas

  • @domdomdom1993 Microsoft word can run in Linux . Just install WINE , and a copy of Office 2007 , and it will work perfectly fine . You must have a program like WINE , or crossover installed to run Windows programs. WINE is free, and can be installed from the software center . If you need help ask.

  • this guy is just like those those cannot think by himself ... other thing is he doesn't know anything!!

  • I think you mean

    sudo apt-get install firmware-b43-installer

    sudo apt-get remove bcmwl-kernel-source

when you said you fixed wireless on dell laptop. Recent laptops don't have such problem.

  • @xpressrazor who uses sudo? lol oh yeah mac os x and ubuntu... im fedora 14 user

  • I didn't have much trouble with wifi on Ubuntu. On puppy linux on the other hand ( my first distro ) i still haven't fix it. After a few minutes on the Ubuntu forum my wifi problem was fixed :)

  • Why didn't you just plug an ethernet cable in to install the drivers?

  • @mastercontrol5000 He did...he just didn't do that first.

  • @mastercontrol5000 because that what someone smart would do

  • "Free doesn't mean cheap."

  • and even if linux had a price tag that was double what people pay for windows i would still use linux... linux being free isn't the reason i use it

  • @emewify Yup...its because penguins kick ass...

  • @emewify I would probably pay for free as in freedom, since thats what gnu/linux gives me. =)

  • "rm -r /" best command ever. made me laugh so hard

  • Go And study what "free" really means ..

  • fuck you man

  • @Zombaiooo You shouldn't get any viruses if you only install apps from the main repository.

  • this fuckin guy

  • i still wonder why people using a windows/mac... you don't have to be a geek to use linux.. =='

  • @LiNuXRuLezX Games is my problem with LINUX

  • Thumbs up if you watch LINUS TECH TIPS

  • I feel like theres an gaming console thingy going on~ PC:PS3 MAC:XBOX LINUX:WII lalala then again it all comes down to who owns which and hates on another.

  • @HikaruNoIkaros You got the first two mixed up. PC and XBOX are the same exact company and MAC and Sony make multipurpose portable devices with a lot of applications but are often loathed by Microsoft geeks. You got the last part down pretty good because the way you get the Linux software is also how you get the Nintendo classics nowadays. Linux also rivals the Nintendo classics with its games. Tux is just as cute and awesome as the Kongs, although he is a penguin.

  • We worship Richard Stallman, Penguins, The Woz, and Linus.

  • Once Linux becomes more compatible with more softwares and games, it's going to compete highly with Apple and Microsoft based OS's. Ubuntu is taking it a step in the right direction by making it more user-friendly, but you still have to be atleast a semi-geek to use it.

But it's not like Linux itself is any safer from viruses by design, it's just that hardly anybody uses it, so nobody bothers to write them for it. It's actually very unprepared to meet such criteria atm.

  • @FuIIOfFaiI Many more servers the world over are Linux or Unix based, do you wonder why they're not infected? This very site your using is on Linux servers. How come you haven't picked up a virus from using it? Security is the key.

Don't forget Apples Mac OS-X is already Unix based (FreeBSD) which is what Linux emulates. But obviously OS-X has a lot of paid developers making software for it for profit.

You don't need to be a geek to use Linux. Just clever enough to read a wiki

  • I installed ubuntu on my alienware laptop and it connected to my router (wifi) right away once i punched in the password. The only thing I had trouble with was my nvidia card, which i figured it out, had to disable my integrated graphics, download the drivers, update, and it worked. Then everytime I connect a HDMI cord to the laptop i have to manually set the signal to go out to my LCD screen :D I <3 linux.....but i still use windows for my games only :P

  • <3 I love Linux. We don't own any windows computers. My dad absolutely hates anything Microsoft.

  • I like this, CUZ IT IS DAMN RIGHT! *from a linux powered netbook*

  • I pirated windows 7 when it first came out, and guess what...it is still working just fine till this day awesome!!! free-ness

  • Thumbs up if you didn't pay for your windows. ;)

  • yinge101 Wow time really does erase everything. Before slim you could do it and it was an official feature. Look up some videos on it.

  • rm -r /

    ?

    you mean

    rm -f /

  • @yinge101 Error: directory not empty. rm failed

  • @Metal404Head I think I might have meant something like "rm -rf /" or something. Been a while since I last used Linux.

  • Linux is just a better MAC.

  • You can update using the Ethernet cable if it doesn't have your WiFi dongle/pmcia/pci driver by default. Or download a driver disc. Or ask the great community that GNU/Linux has for help and someone out there will send you the driver you need. They will even go as far as giving you install instructions.

Which is something I love about the open source community. They are very helpful. Except! The ones that only use emacs. The ones that hate bloatware and are too lazy to remove the packages.

  • Viruses is a foreign word to Linux users.

  • @samphilomath virus? never heard of it.... fedora 14 user here

  • @emewify What virus indeed? check out my channel necopost. I don't worry about stuff like viruses.

  • @samphilomath alright i'll check it out

  • @samphilomath and a casual word for PC users haha

  • @samphilomath Not entirely accurate .... we are too familiar with them, just not as the infected. ;)

  • @samphilomath defragmentation too.

  • Linux has been a nightmare for me. I installed it on my ps3, then some virgin hacked with with linux and got it removed for all ps3s. Now I have 12gb of space on my HDD that I CANT remove...

  • @josh18230 you're not meant to install linux on a ps3...

  • lol...funny review...but we all know and BIG!!!! companies know LINUX runs and is taking over the world...that's why Apple and Windows copied features off of the Linux desktop with there new releases...well i got all of those features like 3 years ago some about 6 years ago..windows and apple is living in the past..catch up to us big boys..

  • As far as I know, GNU is the only perpetual acronym.

  • I Love Linux I personally am punching myself for not switching sooner.

  • "TANGENT!!!" hahaha

  • I run Linux on the home computer and Windows on my laptop, but we actually ran into Linux by accident after our computer crashed and then refused to run Windows. A definite upside of Linux you didn't mention here is that it runs much faster than Windows, especially when browsing the web. However, if you're looking to download popular software, I'd go with a different OS. Although Linux does have some of its own software copycats, but a lot of stuff only runs Mac and PC.

  • Thumbs up if you are watching this on Linux ;)

  • Maybe it's so they can see their monitors better... Okay!

  • 2:45

..... all of which you can get on a windows PC...... for free.

  • @stopthecountdown Yes, but, is Windows free? No. Which is why it's a lot better for companies who have tons of servers or computers.

  • @Zacccc51 my point was he was making out that if you like using free software use linux....... but if you like free software you can do the same on windows

  • Red Hat had an OS based on the Linux Kernal and it was pretty cool. Just as effective and easy to use as Windows. It even came with Gimp.

  • I have a solution to the wireless problem. Before you go into the partitioning (which is now as simple as moving a line to select how much space you want for ubuntu and then other Oses) you can select an option that says "install third-party drivers". If you select that option, you will likely have a working wireless card. You have to do this because it's free software and it's illegal to give out proprietary software without it saying somewhere.

  • I watched this video while running ubuntu :)

  • Give it a try using a virtual machine if you''re unexperienced. Better than a screwed up production box.

  • Ubuntu is an African word and it is said "mmm buntu." I learned that before I ever learned about Linux. It was the theme of a youth gathering. The easiest way to say it in English is that it means "Unity," but there is really more to it. Wikipedia has a whole entry on the philosophy.

  • @kagomeshuko Ubuntu is an African word meaning 'I can't configure Debian (or any other Linux based OS for that matter)'

  • we dont pefer greeks or needs bud

  • Mac is based on the Linux Kernel.

  • @SharingEqualsCaring No, it's not. 1) Mac is the computer, OS X is the operating system, and 2) OS X is based on BSD, which is in turn based on UNIX. Linux is completely devoid of any UNIX code, and thus has no relation to UNIX, BSD, or OS X, apart from the fact that it is a UNIX *like* kernel/OS/whathaveyou.

  • @Xitherun

    Cool story bro.

  • @SharingEqualsCaring Cool 4chan meme bro. My god, you are an idiot.

  • @Xitherun

    noyou

  • @SharingEqualsCaring it's based on unix, not linux- which is also based on unix, so they are similar, but not thesame

  • @paulhojda

How interesting, similar but NOT the same. It's both shallow AND pedantic.

  • dude, you only talked about Linux being 'free' in the money sense. this is totally not the point of it. it is "libre-free", meaning that it respects the 4 laws of software freedom! (see teh FSF definition)

  • where are you recording this, purgatory?

  • Ubuntu (Linux) was very easy to install and i love it.

  • Who are *they*? PENGUINS!!

  • Linus Torvall goes into a McDonalds and orders a coke.

The guy behind the counter recogniced him, takes the tablet, lets the machine pour the coke on it and handed him the tablet.

He said "Heh! What about the cup?!"

McDonalds guy -> "Oh, you need to order that extra"

  • 2:45 I don't think anyone in this world pays for their web browser

  • linux rules. Windows and apple will probably fall to linux soon. People are evolving. likely we'll fall to ubuntu because of canonical's advertising

  • Chuck Norris made it.

  • <3 ubuntu rox my jox. geeks are sexy! :)

  • Ubuntu Sucks. its the Most popular but its the one Distro that Gives Me the Most Trouble. out of the 20 i tried i Like Pardus the very Best. openSUSE is My 2nd choice. ubuntu is 3rd mint 4th and puppy 5th. :-)

  • So uh... Mole people :(

    You make Me sad, Sir.

  • the 3rd group? omg... i like the fact that youre talking about linux but... PCs and MACs are MACHINES!!!!! not an OS....

  • @j0ckl4 PCs and Macs are actually both PCs so he was actually comparing OSes. I've seen people install Mac on Windows and Windows on Mac and have no problems. he was comparing "apples to apples"

  • @supercool97

you said they install Mac on Windows? Visual box or what xD?

i know what you want to tell me but he havent done it professionel enough from my point of view

  • I just went to Best Buy and asked for a wireless card that worked on Linux.

  • "rm-/" Any volunteers?

  • @Tununias I use linux. What he said is spelled

    rm -r /

    rm means remove

-r means recursivly (if a folder has stuff still in it it won't care as it would otherwise)

/ is where the entire operating system and files lie. equivalent to C:\\

So in other words you're just deleting the entire system. derp.

  • @supercool97 Thanks, I wasn't sure how you delete folders with rm. I'm still new(maybe intermediate) to the Linux terminal.

  • For beginners try simpler out of the box distributions like mageia, mint etc.

    Novices prefer debian,ubuntu,fedora.

    But if

U say u know linux and have used scripts.

Just install gentoo linux or arch.

    Let us know your experience.

  • this is so funny

  • who are they???? PENGUINS! :)
