wow, this is so much better than "Oh Yeah" - I read the wikipedia article about Johnny (with all about Oh Yeah being #1 on the radio), watched "Oh Yeah", and was rather disappointed.
But this song is great!
What really annoys the crap out of me is the lagging video.... :/
This song sounds like a 'come and get me' message to Donald Fagan & Walter Becker. The 'Hey Nineteen' era jazz chops chord sounds are all there. Johnny A in Steelky Dan... why not? He likes playing good songs, they like using top players....
@twangCORP that would be incredible, they probably won't call him up cause he's not as big a name as he deserves to be but in the chance they did it would be awesome
I think that Johnny A has become my single favorite Guitar Player. I just love his music. His tone is amazing. I mean I would hate to pick one guitarist over all the others that I love to listen to, but I find that I play more of his stuff on my iPod than any other guitar player. Esp. anything from "Sometime Tuesday Morning."
@XMathis i agree, absolutely brilliant ,saw him live in toronto several years ago at the silver dollar, part of music week, he was the opening set from a list of three acts, tony d., from ottawa , david gogo ,from victoria, two accomplished blues players, i saw tony at the bar totally into johnny, and it was only 8:30, WOW WHAT A NITE.
Here is apart of the article go to "One November Night to see more.
The rest of the design double Florentine horns, distinctive f-holes, singular inlays, the sweeping pickguard and glowing classic bust style finish — was for aesthetics, Johnny says. I wanted my guitar to be a piece of playable art, with the feel, look and sound of a classic model that Gibson might have made between 1959 and 1961.
I agree...saw him in Fall River, MA as well as Raleigh, NC and both times I was blown away. His band is awesome as well. Having seen some pretty great guitarists (Eric Clapton, Steve Miller, The Allman Bros. and Neil Young) live, I can definitely say this guy deserves a place amongst the greats....keep rockin' Johnny!
Actually, Johnny A's guitar was not a guitar "named after" him because of his skill. It was named after him because he made so many suggestions to the original design that Gibson realized they had a guitar that was different enough to be named something else. Hence, the Johnny Signature model. There's an article about it somewhere.
But he's great. He deserves a signature model for sure. The sound he gets live is amazing, which is a treat when so many live bands just sound like loud mud.
That's not actually true. Johnny has been associated with Gibson since 1994. He was approached by Gibson about his signature model because of the stir his first solo album (released in 2000) was creating and the fact that he used Gibson guitars to create his sound.
He was not completely satisfied with the guitars he was using live, at the time, to try and replicate the sound of his ES 295, which was the lion's share of the first album's tone.
He wanted one guitar that could get the woodiness and hollow tone of the 295 but yet still scream like his Les Pauls and do everything in between.
Johnny and Gibson collaborated very closely on bringing to life Johnny's vision of that guitar. It was the combination of both Johnny's skill as a guitarist/musician and his skill for recognizing and achieving great tone which Gibson recognized early on.
Gibson Johnny A signature.....check the Gibson website for info....there's also some interesting interview vids with Johnny A about designing the guitar, playing, influences, etc.
And you might be wrong, I think - he does not have a large collection at all, compared to others, but he uses them well. You can even find him talking about it on YT. He does have an overdrive pedal, though, I seem to recall. Having played for decades, I can promise you that no effects can substitute for knowing how to pick and control your strings; a good guy will ride a $150 guitar better than an amateur can play $50 K worth of guitar & equipment.
I was being sarcastic my friend. Still he has a hell of alot larger collection of footpedals than i use. I too have been playing a very long time, i know what im talking about.
Ah, got me goin' there LOL Yeah, well, in a trio format no matter how you play, it gets tiring quickly unless you have something to add variety, just look at Metheny and his synths. I kinda agree with Vai's move to a multi-effect, keeps life SO much simpler.
I'm pretty sure it's G minor but he has tab books for sale from both albums...check his website. He can work a pretty standard scale into sounding very "out" simply because he is way better than most of us...and he has great ideas..he doesn't just let his fingers follow the scale in a succession of easy fingerings. His CD's are loaded with unreal licks.
To a certain extent playing time doesn't directly correlate to technical skill, everyone learns at their own pace I am, among popular consensus, better than a friend of mine who has been playing for twice the amount of time I have. Although I get shown up by my other friend who has played guitar for less than a year, no need to try and imply anything that comes across as an argument or contest.
I understand what you're saying. I was just addressing his comment that I don't play guitar. I'm certainly not very skilled. I'm just not a fan of Johnny A's tone. This video inspired me to pick up an album and it's a bit better, but I have loyalties to Larry Carlton.
I have only listened to Johnny A. on this vid, but I can tell right away the two are not comparable - they are both very distinct from each other. So, it is really a matter of loyalty or even excluding one for the other, right?
The fact is that their playing styles are vastly different. Larry Carlton (at least by what I've seen, which admittedly isn't too much.) is more of a single note playing kinda guy, while Johnny A relies more on chord melodies.
I can agree to that to a point (listen to Steely Dan's "Kid Charlemagne" for a good idea of Carlton's style), but I'm not knocking anyone on style or technique. Purely tone.
I'll listen to it later tonight, I'm in school atm. But, you have to remember that it all comes down to personal preference. Personally I like 'em both, but Johnny A is just pure genius in my ears. If you don't like it... Well- You're missing out, that's for sure.
