Bought this machine, sampled it to death using an RME interface into Ableton, sold the Machinedrum . Same great quality less desk clutter, saved myself headache of running plugin drums into outboard compressors and back in during evrey mix and exposing it to audio latency
@fjl90 In this video the routing is pretty basic and old school, the MD and Virus go into my mixer(not shown) and the kp3 is on a send to both stereo channels on my mixer and then the mixer output goes into my input of my sound card (Motu 828mk3). The micro kontrol is setup as a logic control surface (controls faders etc) and enables me to bring in the midi parts from the virus, which logic is sequencing. Hope that helped.
I'm sorry if this comes across as critical..but, why do you need such expensive gear to make such minimal music?? I mean, seriously you could do all of this with a laptop or one hardware sampler. Seems like a VERY expensive hobby..but then again, if you are digging it..more power to you!!
I can see your point as I have released many tracks with just my mac and trusty audio interface. But its not as fun as hardware or as spontaneous. I mean from the moment I had a go on a machinedrum I was hooked and if you've ever seen live sets with elektron gear as opposed to laptops with Ableton then straight away you notice how laptops just have not got as quality a sound, almost thin in comparison. Yeah you can use compressors etc. but the md sounds good right out of the box.
@BenLinkd The reason it sounds good right of the box is because of the built-in effects and compressors and such. But I agree it is really cool, so you did this with virus and machinedrum only, or what is the KP3?
Yes i also used the kp3 (korg kaoss pad 3 dynamic effects sampler) but only as an effects box, like it states in the description. Thanks for commentiong and watching.
@halation777 It's about workflow.. if you enjoy using software and find it productive, then great..
Me, I can't stand it, even with midi controllers.. I find it much more spontaneous and fun to use dedicated interfaces designed for specific pieces of gear/functions.. Then there is also the issue of stability for live performances in uncontrollable environments - clubs/outdoors/etc - heat, vibration.. waiting in silence for a computer to reboot in front of hundreds of people is not fun
hey there! ive been looking into getting some proper monitor speakers. what are those you got there? looks like a clean setup! and by the way really nice live session!
hey man! i've been looking into getting some proper monitor speakers. what are those you got there? looks like a very clean setup! and great session by the way!
Hey, great vid and tune, im looking into a more hardware based setup myself. What would you recommend as a sequencer? I've my eye on the mpc1000. Is there any other options worth considering? Thanks!
So, what would you suggest getting into first (from a n00b POV) - what's the most intuitive to learn? MD? Virus? I've given up on software because I just stare blankly at the millions of virtual buttons & knobs and it kills my creativity dead.
@emkayultra Hard Q really to answer, the korg electribes have just had an update and are renowned for their intuitive work flow. As do the elektron gear, although the elektron stuff is expensive. Then there's the native instruments maschine, which is a hardware software hybrid (giving the best of both worlds). Access virus TI also gives awesome functionality as you can control it from your DAW via vst/au or just by the hardware, but you will need a sequencer.
This video is just awesome, love you beat programmng. Are all those sounds straight from the DM or did you have to spend many months tweaking them to perfection? I really want to get into production but the thought of having to spend years learning how to make killer beats puts me off. What would u recommed as the first bit of kit to get to start with?
@emkayultra Hey thanks for the comment. The MD comes with 5 different synthesis types that contain various machines for conjuring up fat bass drums or snappy snares or even bass sounds. These machines can be modified using parameter locks and basic synth controls such as envelopes, filters lfo's, effects for sculpting the sound. So Id say its a tweakers dream, as there are endless possibilities for sound creation. MD's are so intuitive that it really is very easy to create some great sounds.
not trying to flatter, you stuff really sounds good, it has all the right elements, nicely balanced, nice variations... Hope I'll get to that kind of level one day :o)
small question, On another vid I read that you're basically gearing towards VST's (especially NI) getting rid of your equipment. Is it realy that good? You don't miss the knobs and buttons? I'm not good on creating synth patches yet so I'd think lot's of knobs like the virus would help understanding?
No I'm not going to sell all my gear to buy VST/AU. I already have quite a few soft synths. And as you said you'd miss the knobs and hands on approach (happy mistakes) although there are indeed some amazing midi controllers out these days. A combination of both hardware and software is probably the best way.
@BenLinkd ok, then I misread you probably :o) Yeah, hardware is a lot more fun, but expensive as well, and a pain in the ass when it comes to integration, loading patches etcetera :o) . Actually, that's where the Virus TI series is really powerful, it's hardware, with all the knobs and processing, yet it acts and integrates like a VST-plugin, no cable-mess, no trying to remember what patch you were using... best of both worlds :oP... one day it will be mine :oD
Nah the MD is not sequencing the Virus. in this track I used Logic to sequence the Virus (each part controlled via the Korg micro kontrol). Logic is also sending out the master midi clock to keep everything tight and in time. The MD is only sequencing itself.
I have a very important question, maybe you could be so kind to give insight. I dont knwo wether the MD will stay in sync forever based only on Midi Clock. I know that Midi clock is unreliable and I thought that it is not even a suitable way of synchronization, merely a "start with the master termpo and forget". Midi timeclock always stays tight, because it listens to the MTC commands all the time. So what happens after lets say 10 to 20 minutes?
@suffpapst I have synced up the md with logic and ableton via midi and have not encountered any problems yet with either the md being the master or slave. Your right saying that its not the most stable, but as long as you don't use plug-ins that have latency issues and have a good enough computer etc. it shouldn't really be a problem. Also I have performed live sets for around an hour plus and the midi timing has been fine providing the plug-in buffer is set to around 256. Hope that helped!!!
this is so sick man i wish i can do this stuff!! after watching this video i went and bought a machinedrum, but i dont use it like you do lol check out if you want.
Hey man. your stuff is sick. I just got myself machinedrum, and have been trying to get it to sync with Ableton like, but doesnt go in-time. do you make ableton the master and machinedrum slaved for midi ?
Actually I have not tried syncing it to ableton live yet, as I used logic pro instead, which was driving the master midi clock and the MD was receiving.
Really enjoyed this mix mate! Never really into house mixes on youtube because they always sound a bit amateur-ish, but this is really great, bet it would sound great through a live PA.
Thanks man Im happy you liked it. All sounds in this track come from The Elektron MD (drums, bass & percussion) and Access Virus C (chords, stabs, effects, arpeggio). Logic sequences the virus and then the parts are brought in with the Micro kontrol. All parts are then fed through the KP3 and then improvised live with the arrangement, via a jam. The outputs are then recorded into logic via my Motu 828 mk3 firewire audio interface where a Limiter can be added. Hope that helped.
Well thank you, yeah I know what you mean, I used to use nothing but logic and audio units etc. but then I caught the hardware bug. Thanks for watching.
Hey man, I appreciate your feedback. Ive always been an avid watcher of your excellent live music vids. Actually your md vids and other peoples persuaded me to buy it.
nice, good track....this reminds me of chicago tech back in the day...sounds great.. this is a track i would consider making a white lable record of... maybe a hundred or so isnt veary much and bringing it to your local record stores maybe sending it out to some other places that still sell records...
But I don't understand how you can control the MD in Logic.
So if I want do it, I must connect the MIDI OUT from my Apogee Ensemble to the MIDI IN in my Elektron MD...and I can use the MD from the Logic's pianoroll?
Hey man cheers! basically I opted for logic to just send out its midi clock to the MD to keep it in time, I find I like the sequencing of the MD with the parameter locks, its controls, effects and how intuitive it all is. You can sequence the MD from Logic and you should be able doing it with a midi interface etc. as you described
This is TIGHT !_! Thanx for sharing. This inspires me to continue figuring out my MD UW :) So you are running the MD and the Virus through the korg micro control? Thanx in advance.... MINIMAL!!!!!!!!
Thanks for the great comment! I am using the korg mcro kontrol to send out the main midi clock to both the virus and the md from Logic, which also sends midi sequences/data to the virus. The micro kontrol is then used to control Logic's mixer.
Might you tell me what sound the Virus and the Machinedrum is doing. There is a kinda organ sound there, is that Virus or Machinedrum, and also the other more sharp stab sound is that virus?
No probs! The main chord stab is from the virus along with the arpeggio organ/piano, the sharpish stab (the one more audible in the filter part) and transition effects. The MD does the drums, bass and everything else (making some contemporary style drums etc).
Id just give you a hint that u could also use a monomachine for those chords and stuff, if you like the elektrons that will make you go insane. but i think u know what ure doing!
Cheers man, yeah the elektrons are definitely a force to be reckoned with and I have already looked at the monomachine to see what it can do. And I can say that I would like one very much as it seems a very comprehensive bit of kit that would be ideal for my set-up. So its next on my list of things to get, although I must say i do like the viruses as well.
BTW! How do you find the UI on the Virus. On the machinedrum you can see the original value on every knob. The virus doesn't show you the original values of each knob when you switch patch or voice, right? I'm looking to buy one but find the elektron interface so much more intuitive. Cheers!
Cheers for the info I have only owned the MD for a little while so I am yet to find out what it can do.
With regards to the Virus the UI is intuitive my only gripe really is with the screen, other minor things like scrolling through lots of menus and sub menus etc. don't really matter as there are no abbreviations so you are able to find the desired parameters. When switching patch the virus will only display knob settings by pressing the edit buttons from the main section and filter section.
Thanks for the reply. You're right to use Logic if you know it best. However, you can actually take chords on the Machinedrum. The two knobs to the right of the basenote knob on your midi machine set two additional notes as plus/minus steps relative to your basenote. pretty cool!
What exactly do you do with Logic? Do you have the virus arranged during the whole live set or is it just looping all sounds continuously? My idea is that Logic could actually be removed and everything could be sequenced from the Machinedrum. Or are you doing any other fancy stuff from Logic? Cheers for any reply to Mr. Detective :)
Hey cheers for the comment. I use logic to sequence the virus via midi (loops) then my micro kontrol is set to native so it controls the mixer within logic (for bringing in and out parts). I have tried sequencing the virus from the machinedrum, but as it is basically monophonic (one trigger at a time, one basic note) and if you like big chords you would need to set it up with the same sound on several channels. And as I am a logic head I am more at home with it and feel its more intuitive.
Hey I'm not sure I am with you on this question, as it does not generate any sound. The micro kontrol is a midi keyboard/controller and therefore it sends/receives midi data. You can set it up to control your favorite parameters from your synthesizer/drum machine (real or vst/audio unit) or DAW. Or to just play chords and sequences via its keys.
by far the best machinedrum vid on youtube i have seen, finally some real music and not some shitty crap! :D good job dude

Hey Ben,
on your other video you explained the midi routing to someone.
Can you maybe explain your audio routing?
Because sometimes the Virus goes through the KP3, sometimes the MD does.
Or am I wrong?
And those faders on the Korg Micro Kontrol, are they giving Midi Commands ?
fjl90 10 months ago

You appear to be confusing MIDI Machine Control (MMC) with MIDI Beat Clock. MIDI Time Code (MTC) is another thing altogether as well.
Don't sweat it. Beat Clock is all that you require to sync a Machine Drum with another MIDI device in 99% of cases.

Might you tell me what sound the Virus and the Machinedrum is doing. There is a kinda organ sound there, is that Virus or Machinedrum, and also the other more sharp stab sound is that virus?
M3sslah 2 years ago
No probs! The main chord stab is from the virus along with the arpeggio organ/piano, the sharpish stab (the one more audible in the filter part) and transition effects. The MD does the drums, bass and everything else (making some contemporary style drums etc).

Cheers bud, much appreciated. Yeah sometimes while messing with live stuff that has so much tweak-ability you can get carried away a little.

That's the beauty of it. (imo)

Hey youre doing very well =)
Id just give you a hint that u could also use a monomachine for those chords and stuff, if you like the elektrons that will make you go insane. but i think u know what ure doing!
very good
Gomanubis 2 years ago

Cheers!
triangle70 2 years ago
Cheers for the info I have only owned the MD for a little while so I am yet to find out what it can do.
With regards to the Virus the UI is intuitive my only gripe really is with the screen, other minor things like scrolling through lots of menus and sub menus etc. don't really matter as there are no abbreviations so you are able to find the desired parameters. When switching patch the virus will only display knob settings by pressing the edit buttons from the main section and filter section.
BenLinkd 2 years ago
But after using the MD I must say it has such a great user interface that it has made me want to buy a monmachine to accompany it. So I'm saving.
Cheers
Ben

Thanks for the reply. You're right to use Logic if you know it best. However, you can actually take chords on the Machinedrum. The two knobs to the right of the basenote knob on your midi machine set two additional notes as plus/minus steps relative to your basenote. pretty cool!

PS! Huge inspiration man!! DS!

Thanks.

Detective :)
triangle70 2 years ago
Hey cheers for the comment. I use logic to sequence the virus via midi (loops) then my micro kontrol is set to native so it controls the mixer within logic (for bringing in and out parts). I have tried sequencing the virus from the machinedrum, but as it is basically monophonic (one trigger at a time, one basic note) and if you like big chords you would need to set it up with the same sound on several channels. And as I am a logic head I am more at home with it and feel its more intuitive.
BenLinkd 2 years ago
hi, can you just use the microkontrol as a stand alone keyboard if you upload a patch to one of its presets?
mafalum 2 years ago
Hey I'm not sure I am with you on this question, as it does not generate any sound. The micro kontrol is a midi keyboard/controller and therefore it sends/receives midi data. You can set it up to control your favorite parameters from your synthesizer/drum machine (real or vst/audio unit) or DAW. Or to just play chords and sequences via its keys.

Detroit stabs for ever! Does the sps have groove quantize natively and can groove be quantized on the fly?
