The color contrasts are nice. The lighshows @ the UFO Club in London didn't use clock faces until a guy named Travis Rivers (?) brought the technique over to their light artists. WTF, spread joy, says I.
The statement is from a review by Jim Langdon from the Austin American newspaper in response to seeing the 13th Elevators perform live in the Jade Room in Austin, Texas. it is his attempt to describe the music after experiencing it first-hand. It's important to remember that this is very early on in the psychedelic scene. This documentary was my first attempt at learning how to create documentaries and I agree that it is very rudimentary and is of poor quality.
sorry bro. didn't mean any offense. i was being sarcastic which is difficult in text i realize. i was mainly commenting on the corny sounding narration at the beginning, not necessarily the film per se. funny how i can put my foot in my mouth even online! lol! anyways, any true fan of roky's is a friend of mine! i'm curious to know what you thought of the 2005 film. peace brother.
My only defense is that the documentary does offer some unique information on the band found nowhere else. For one, very little is known about the death of Stacy Sutherland - which is fully explored in this piece. The piece also provides a unique experience of a light show, which was faithfully re-created by Sidney Brammer, one of the original Light Show Debutantes (LSD).
yes! thanx for uploading this. i'm a huge roky erickson fan. nonetheless, langdon's writing coupled with the guy doing the voiceover is a real hoot! i'm watching the other parts of your film now. later man!
No offense taken. I am simply stating that I knew when I posted it that it has it "unique qualities." As I was saying, Sidney Brammer made up one-third of the Brammer triplets, which created the light shows around Austin at the time. She is the daughter of famed author of Billy Lee Brammer, who was part of the Johnson Administration. Billy Lee wrote a famous book, "The Gay Place" and eventually committed suicide. Sidney is a noted screenwriter these days. Hope you enjoy! Life is good!
@claudemathews - I'm a MAJOR liquid light show fan. No digital effect can replicate liquids when played skillfully by humans - It's like playing an instrument, you are actually jamming w the band. Where can I find out more about the Brammer's & their shows? And pix of them?
As for the 2005 documentary called "You're Gonna Miss Me," I also agree that the piece is superb. My only criticism is that I wish the piece had a little rougher quality to it, because (and I can speak from first hand experience) this band was raucous, more like a corn cob than creamed corn! For a much better example of my work, watch "Singin' the Yodeling Blues." And after 25 years, I will be delivering a major doc (but not on popular music) in another year. Watch for it!
I promise this is my last response. Sidney also did light shows for the Vulcan Gas Company at the time. Again, this roughly done piece is here for the fans to enjoy and I hope it adds an additional odd quality to what is certainly one of the oddest and most enjoyable aspects of modern American music! Peace!
@claudemathews - Claude - I do liquid lights as a happy hobby. Can you tell me where I can find more info/pix on Sydney & the Brammers? (& , of course, their lightshows) Horseshit?? Ngaaa....it's a Fine Art.
the only difference between roky and syd is that roky somehow found a way to managed his psychosis and remained productive after various blank periods. syd burnt out and never returned to his music. roky did. they're both incredibly special artists. R.I.P. to the crazy diamond. roky continues to tour after years of inactivity and sounds better than ever!
In a way, I think they would have been better without the jug. The jug was ok on a few songs but sometimes it just doesn't fit. Thats why I love the Bull of the Woods album. Stacy Sutherland shines on that one. Either way I love the Elevators!
there is really interesting and unique underground music happening now just like there were in the 60s... it's just not as popular as it was then because people are just getting pumped with monotonous television and radio programs that are just the same garbage over and over again.. we've come to think that's it's all there is... but we're wrong.. maybe in a few years things will change and art and music that is real and raw will be popular again.
This cat should do a Kennedy Center concert with Dylan and Springsteen. Three of America's wildest and most brilliant minds. We have a chance to give Roky his due.
I got to see Roky play at lollapalooza this summer with the Explosions and it was just magical! He still has a monumental stage presence, he and his lead guitar player had such a sweet rapport and definitely provided me one of the best guitar performances i've ever seen. Like he hasn't aged a day. It was so amazing.
Roky was just one of the hundreds of wonderful musicians I knew in Austin back in the day, the mid-eighties and I have great stories about every one of them. Until I get a book deal I suppose they will never be told. My times with Roky tho are hilarious and one time in particular still dumbfounds me. How could it have possibly happened? But it did. He gave me and my mom his book called Openers. I have it sitting right here and I read it occassionally. Roky ET GCV!
Well, otherwise, it sounds untrue, like you're bragging. Just a summary to entice folks to buy your never-to-be-written book. Go on - tease us with a short story!
Way fucking decent of you to post your whole doc. here for us for free. Glad theres still some integrity over $ left in the world. Helps to ease the Jitters...Ha ha ha I kill me.
growing up in Kerrville....i a knew most of the guys in the band...i was in high school with Ronnie Leatherman's son Wes....The Elevators have and will always be my favorite band of all time...i got to play on that fretless hofner copy bass...that bass was a daily scene in my young life...my beautiful life and i thank ronnie and all th eguys in the band ....my grandfather is buried not 100 feet ferom stacy keith...and i have through the years...every year put picks on his (stacy's) grave stone

wht is a jug? im not english
bose1234567890 2 years ago
Try google. A jug is a vessel usually made of clay that was used to hold "white lightning" or moonshine.

what a brilliant commentary. Laid back. Superb!!!!

I'd be doing myself and the rest of the band a disservice, if I didn't play the HELL outta this JUG!

Do you still have the jug? If so, at some point send it to the R&R hall of fame in Cleveland. It will be a marvel 300 years from now.
