@JennyAakiwa actually it does not require that much coding since the BILLION star systems are PROCEDURALLY generated (look it up). if you create a large set of equations which generate the planets randomly, then the entire map will be only a few hundred mb. most of the coding is rendering and multiplayer stuff which is (comparitively) not that tough

@les777pl That could be because the ship's a lot faster than your standard conventional rockets that get sent up all the time at the moment, or that those mountains are especially tall as part of the planet height-map geometry testing, but the scale of the planet as a whole, and thickness of the atmosphere are an exact copy of earth’s.

yeah infinity seems to be more about space combat and may not be as complicated as eve. I hope it comes out. Would be nice to have a open world space sim where you can fly from spave to the planet!

As breathtaking as it is, this game engine is useless without solid game mechanics behind it. As far as I am concerned, it's just an awesome demo, it's not a game untill I can play it.

As nice as this engine demo is, it's of no much more use that 3D Mark when it comes to gaming as far as I am concerned.
You might not like EvE (hey nobody's perfect :D), that wasn't my point to begin with. EvE is a successfull game for many years, infinity is an ongoing ENGINE project so far.

I never said eve had a great game engine (although it has one), I said that having a great game engine (AKA infinity that's only a tech demo) was only a (SMALL) part of the problem.
You thing jumpgate is gonna be great ? Maybe, but you think it will be lagproof ? Why would it be ? No MMO managed to have that many players without lag. Don't expect this to change.
As for infinity, it's only a techdemo, not a fully implemented game.

@p3vvp3vv I don't see why anygame would be more (or less) lagproof than eve. There are limits to what severs can do, and to what our current technology can do. I am fairly sure that if CCP could fix lag they would.
Most MMOs have lag issues, EvE is no different than the others. As for Infinity, it's barely playable anyway.... EvE has many people working on those issues, maybe they aren't the best around, but if you read the dev blogs you will see they easily kick you in the nutz "tech wise" ;)

a planet that close to another planet (even if it was a moon) would be pulled into the ringed planet and would act as a slow meteor and it would be completely distroyed, besides infinity is good but it doesnt offer anything close to the full potential eve can give

@super6plx It's just a matter of doing LOD. 'Enlarge' (resolution) where it needs to be bigger, and make it smaller when its not needed. A distant star can be rendered as a dot if very far away, a far planet you dont need to render at all! The moving of the planets in combination with streaming them in and out is giving me a headache though. how the hell do i accomplish that!!
Could have use toons like from 1979- cartoon G-Force, or better a Raven lift off with theme from Airwolf. But send it to space for eve gate jump lol. love the scenes. 0/

Looks neat, but from stopping by at the infinity forums over the past two years I got the impression, that it's more of a highly sophisticated game developer thingy than a project with real perspective of coming to life. Just my two cents.

@ceylous3121 CCP Is not making Infinity. Do your research, kid. Infinity is mainly developed by one person, and is largely helped by the many contributing members of the community. They contribute things such as models, music, sounds, textures, stories, just to name a few. Go visit the site, there's a REALLY nice tech demo on there.
@s0utht0wnjr Infinity still has some core design issues that need to be addressed (player congregation for example), and to that, the guy still needs to let others in since he cannot expect to handle the workload of hosting, CS, patching, moderating etc all on his own, and he should not rely on volunteer work to do this either (unreliable and inconsistent). Before this happens, the game IS vaporware because it is literally some guy's personal spare time project.
@ChromeBallz Player congregation is actually already dealt with, the core systems taking care of that. He's already partnered with Keith Newton to share the workload. Once the game is further down the line of development, then he'll be recruiting mods and whatnot (most likely to be the older users on the forums). And it is not actually vaporware, considering it's still being worked on. Vaporware is software that is announced, but then cancelled. Keith has a twitter @inovae_keith

With 200 million star systems (allegedly) in the game however, this becomes nearly impossible, given the sheer amount of space. Even if Infinity manages to get 10 million players, each and every one of those players would have an amount of space equal to about EVE Online all to themselves. I have yet to see or hear any concrete ideas to manage this part of Infinity - How exactly is this dealt with?
Also, you have to remember that players almost never do exactly what you expect them to do unless you're forcing it down their throats (ala themepark EQ/WoW style). A sandbox requires some incredibly robust design to make it work properly before a single line of code is written, and even then it's a big unknown. EVE, despite it's far more limited travelling options, still had a LOT of problems in the beginning with player congregation.
@aaabronco While I agree, almost anyone capeable of 3D game animation is making a strive to create space-faring MMOs (mostly to no avail). A few examples would be jumpgate evoloution, star trek the game, ACE online, black prophecy, and a few others I cant remeber now. One day eve will die though. CCP is almost guarenteed to do something stupid (like continueing to ignore the paying customers advice) and the action will completely kill the game for all but a few, which is when a new MMO will rise
I play EVE and I still find this interesting. Don't get me wrong, I like EVE's style of play...I just feel it is a bit dated and needs some changes that never will happen. This is most likely for the fear the CCP might lose their veteran players.
With EVE, changes are coming slowly but steadily. Will Infinity ever get released? Not sure. Demos look cool, but until there's a release date it's just vaporware.
Speaking of EVE changes, did you see the EVE planetary art demo of Dominion that was posted today? I also remember seeing a demo of EVE atmospheric flight somewhere too.

Hopefully this game will be less boring than EVE. I tried EVE out, and to be honest, I don't have the patience to go online for five seconds a day (to choose another skill to train) for a couple of years before I can actually get a good ship within which I would fly around a completely empty 0.0 space finding absolutely no one, and when I do eventually find someone it's actually some player corporation who blasts me to pieces with a giant mushroom the size of a city.

Eve didn't get owned. Infinity has been in development for years and only ended up in a few screenshots, a couple very nice 3-4 minute videos and a game that sounds awesome on paper, but shows no sign of getting any closer to release.

I saw that april 2010 demo and got the same impression. It doesn't look like the the ship is accelerating greatly when heading back into space.
Anyway, is this game coming out anytime soon?

I doubt infinity will be able to have 700 player battles with configurable ships like in EVE.
ON the other side in EVE you will never be able to land on planets I guess although in dust 514 you will be able to have people fight on planets.
EVE has a good engine. People should stop the war between the a very good game and a very promising "work in progress".

@p3vvp3vv I don't see why anygame would be more (or less) lagproof than eve. There are limits to what severs can do, and to what our current technology can do. I am fairly sure that if CCP could fix lag they would.
Most MMOs have lag issues, EvE is no different than the others. As for Infinity, it's barely playable anyway.... EvE has many people working on those issues, maybe they aren't the best around, but if you read the dev blogs you will see they easily kick you in the nutz "tech wise" ;)

@super6plx It's just a matter of doing LOD. 'Enlarge' (resolution) where it needs to be bigger, and make it smaller when its not needed. A distant star can be rendered as a dot if very far away, a far planet you dont need to render at all! The moving of the planets in combination with streaming them in and out is giving me a headache though. how the hell do i accomplish that!!

To all of CCP's fans who dislike Infinity, Fuck off. This is not vaporware, it will be released, Infinity is not copying EVE, and Infinity is currently only being coded by one person. The atmospheric flight demo for EVE was over 3 years ago. When will that be released, hmm? Oooh new planet textures! Woopty do. IA (Infinity Admin) said that there might even be free accounts, with the option to pay to unlock everything. Go research Infinity before you even attempt to compare the two.

@ceylous3121 CCP Is not making Infinity. Do your research, kid. Infinity is mainly developed by one person, and is largely helped by the many contributing members of the community. They contribute things such as models, music, sounds, textures, stories, just to name a few. Go visit the site, there's a REALLY nice tech demo on there.

I think both can co exist. Eve will have WIS and Infinity will have 200 billion systems and the ablity to fly over and land on planets.
And about the copying stuff, humans are not orginal, but the guy who made infinity comes close.
Eve might have been an inspiration but this ISN'T an rip-off.

@s0utht0wnjr Infinity still has some core design issues that need to be addressed (player congregation for example), and to that, the guy still needs to let others in since he cannot expect to handle the workload of hosting, CS, patching, moderating etc all on his own, and he should not rely on volunteer work to do this either (unreliable and inconsistent). Before this happens, the game IS vaporware because it is literally some guy's personal spare time project.
I want this to be released :/

@ChromeBallz Player congregation is actually already dealt with, the core systems taking care of that. He's already partnered with Keith Newton to share the workload. Once the game is further down the line of development, then he'll be recruiting mods and whatnot (most likely to be the older users on the forums). And it is not actually vaporware, considering it's still being worked on. Vaporware is software that is announced, but then cancelled. Keith has a twitter @inovae_keith

With 200 million star systems (allegedly) in the game however, this becomes nearly impossible, given the sheer amount of space. Even if Infinity manages to get 10 million players, each and every one of those players would have an amount of space equal to about EVE Online all to themselves. I have yet to see or hear any concrete ideas to manage this part of Infinity - How exactly is this dealt with?

Also, you have to remember that players almost never do exactly what you expect them to do unless you're forcing it down their throats (ala themepark EQ/WoW style). A sandbox requires some incredibly robust design to make it work properly before a single line of code is written, and even then it's a big unknown. EVE, despite it's far more limited travelling options, still had a LOT of problems in the beginning with player congregation.

@aaabronco While I agree, almost anyone capeable of 3D game animation is making a strive to create space-faring MMOs (mostly to no avail). A few examples would be jumpgate evoloution, star trek the game, ACE online, black prophecy, and a few others I cant remeber now. One day eve will die though. CCP is almost guarenteed to do something stupid (like continueing to ignore the paying customers advice) and the action will completely kill the game for all but a few, which is when a new MMO will rise

I play EVE and I still find this interesting. Don't get me wrong, I like EVE's style of play...I just feel it is a bit dated and needs some changes that never will happen. This is most likely for the fear the CCP might lose their veteran players.

With EVE, changes are coming slowly but steadily. Will Infinity ever get released? Not sure. Demos look cool, but until there's a release date it's just vaporware.
Speaking of EVE changes, did you see the EVE planetary art demo of Dominion that was posted today? I also remember seeing a demo of EVE atmospheric flight somewhere too.

Hopefully this game will be less boring than EVE. I tried EVE out, and to be honest, I don't have the patience to go online for five seconds a day (to choose another skill to train) for a couple of years before I can actually get a good ship within which I would fly around a completely empty 0.0 space finding absolutely no one, and when I do eventually find someone it's actually some player corporation who blasts me to pieces with a giant mushroom the size of a city.

Eve didn't get owned. Infinity has been in development for years and only ended up in a few screenshots, a couple very nice 3-4 minute videos and a game that sounds awesome on paper, but shows no sign of getting any closer to release.
