LOL I loved the commentator at the end end, ' If a meteor is coming to earth, I'm going to go see what AUDI does, because its prolly going to be right!' haha best selling point ever.
We're not robots, we're not commentators, we're not rule makers. This is racing, we're racing drivers. If you think this is tough, you're in the wrong business.
is it just me, or the video didn't show it clearly enough, I find that the 2nd move was just normal defensive move? The Peugeot was still completely at the front and had the right to took the line that could block the behind car. The 1st move on the chicane was a bit too much though.
@pennypacker93 Typical French? Why? the germans and the Italians make that too (F1 whith Ferrari and shumi for exemple). So you say that just cause you maybe don't like us. French are good at racing, Peugeot win the 24h du mans in 2009 and win the 2010 Le Mans Series. We're not so bad.. so sorry.
I hope all the Audi cheerleaders realize Audi and Peugeot bought the sport and made a farce of sports car racing's top class. All of their wins with diesels deserve an asterisk due to the rule book that legislated diesels into 1st place. A dark time in sports car racing history...
The drivers are in multi million euro safety cells, the marshals are not and I find the lack of respect for the marshals safety by Peugeot here is appalling. Every single person who claims that this is OK clearly has no respect for what the marshals do or their safety.
To the people saying "This isn't F1 and what the Peugeot was doing was in the rules" I will say without the marshals the race cannot go ahead, treat the marshals poorly or endanger them needlessly and they will stop doing it.
Peugeot have puled out of doing the le mans in 2012 they say because of the economic struggles in europe i think its because even with 3 cars to audis 1 last year and cheating they still couldn't beat audi
These commentators have been watching too much F1. What the Pug driver did was within the rules, and is actually is acceptable. If it wasn't, then that driver would have gotten a drive-through.
@carsismeZ06 The Pugeot was being shown a blue flag. He should not bhave gone side by side into the chicane. Pushing another car off the track is against not acceptable even in when fighting for position in any race series apart from NASCAR. That area the Audi was being pushed into not only is not concidered part of the track and therefore liable to incur a penalty if the Audi stays there; it's a very dirty road shoulder.
If that Peugeot was fighting the Audi for position, or even to stay on the same lap, it would have made sense. When your FOUR laps down and are having blue flags waved at you, you do not drive someone nearly into the guardrail on a straight, that's pathetic, and part of why I despise Peugeot Sport.
I was at le mans and happened to get access, found access, at the curve where the pug blocked the Audi. It is disgraceful, remember petit where Montagny blocked Bernhard and he ended up going into the wall? Peugeot need to read the rule book and revise it. Their actions are becoming ridiculous. I can name 3 off the top of my head ; Zuhai '10, Le Mans '11 and Petit '11. They need to think about what their doing before they cause a MASSIVE accident.
I remember seeing this happen live...really annoyed me. The Peugeot team trying to take out the last Audi in such a way just wasn't on... It's a good job that Audi kept the lead and won, because otherwise this incident would caused a lot of debate over the end result. I hope next year the R18s have a bit more luck when it comes to incidents, it was a shame that the other 2 crashed.
Peugeot...you spend a bundle on building a great car, getting right personel & you're one of the two contenders to win Le Mans outright. but then the race gets away from you, so what do you do. get desperate & act like twats. sad bit is it's this behaviour that everyone will remember from your 2011 campaign, not all the great effort just the shite, you twats.
blatent cheating, FIA need to do something with regards to these french cheats, it happens so many time, another example is from the 60's when the mini won the Monte and was disqualified, sad and pathetic
Look at it this way...Peugeot cheats. In doing so they prove to the world yet again that they're a gaggle of unprofessional, unsporting frogs and they lose Le Mans yet again! Hahahaha. Way to go Audi - what an amazing program. Great job to Corvette Racing too!
Are there any videos of the Audi's blocking at Spa? Be good to compare... I quite like the rule that says you don't have to let the car past, but to almost cause a crash is too far. It looks like contact at 0:23 seconds...
Things like this make Endurance much better than, for example, F1. It's a team sport, and not a competition of driver against driver or even car against car. This is way it was not unsporting, but part of the show. The Audi team knew it would happen and they would surely do exactly the same if its other two cars were still on the race.
There may not be rules against it, but when your 5 laps down, and the race leader is trying to get past, you don't try and knock him off into a corner, and you especially don't blatantly try and run him into a wall on a straight for god's sake. It's typical Peugeot bullshit, for once they weren't faster than Audi, so they resorted to dirty driving.
In Spa 2011 (i.e before Le Mans) the #3 Audi did a EXACTLY the same thing to the #7 Pug. Although being unsporting, it is within the rules. Strangely, there is no rule in this type of racing that says a lapped car must move out of the way of a any faster car that is approaching it, regardless of if it is the leader or not. A blue flag is waived to warn the driver that a faster car is approaching him, unlike in F1 where a blue flag means you MUST move over and let the faster car through.
Even if you do think that a driver that is laps down is allowed to block the leading driver, there is a difference between simply blocking them and attempting to run them off the track; in my opinion, this is clearly the latter case. Whether you think the Peugeot should be allowed to block or not in this situation doesn't matter because Gene was taking it too far and running Lotterer off the track.
It's incidents like this and Davidson's stupid behaviour last year barging off a Corvette that make people loose respect for Peugeot. It's bad enough that they and Audi basically have the race to themselves, as if they weren't spoiled enough, they then go and act like dicks towards their only rivals. Martin Haven's right - if its a battle for position or the lead, great. But this is cynical and stupid. The look on Ulrich's face if that Audi had been wiped out...
Well we know from the last couple of years that Peugeot hires some asshat idiots to drive their cars. They are wreckless and I'm glad they continue to lose now.
Peugeot cheated the regulations to have their cars faster until this year, and now that Audi is properly as quick, they start to block like a bunch of morons on track. Fucking frogs.
1.st --- I love the LMP1 sport prototypes, but nowaddays they should only race each other as in the AMLS series and not longer inbetween "slower" GT racecars...
2.nd --- The ACO should ban them from 24H Le Mans race! Only 6 cars from 2 manufacturers causing all the problems with lapping in slow traffic... We should not favour the ego from Peugeot or Audi and sit down, waiting for another 1955 tragedy! That would kill 24H racing! This year luck was onboard within all the accidents!!! But...
This is just... Normal... This is not a F1 race, in 24 hours, a guy who overtake you for the 4th time and who is in the same category than you is ALLOWED to do that because they ARE in the same race ! People who comment this overtake are NOT professional drivers and don't know anything about endurance race ! This is unacceptable in F1, but in 2 cars of the same category in a 24 hours race : it's NORMAL.
@denisqmystery I think in a way you are right. I think that him trying to push the other driver off is a bit too far... risking a massive crash at high speed. If the block wasnt that far extreme then it would be OK and i would have not uploaded the vid. Its a 50 - 50 and people are split. Its a 24 hour race, normally this would be fine but to push him into the wall its a bit far dont u think?
@780Motorsports look at the first overtake : Montagny just keep his line : He doesn't have to stop to let him pass... Second overtake : one more time, he keep his own line, the ideal one at this place. Anyway, if the Audi don't have enough power to overtake the Peugeot as fast as the Peugeot is, Montagny is allowed to keep his own way. For the 3rd Overtake, clean one for the 2 cars, the Audi has enough speed to try the overtake, and the Peugot goes on the aspiration. Well, that's my opinion...

@780Motorsports Whether it is endurance racing or Formula 1 if you are a lapped car, same class or not, if you are a lapped car you must get out of the leaders way. That's why the Peugout was getting the blue flag, the blue flag means "the leader is coming through, get out of his way" therefore this manoeuvre by the #7 is a very dirty move is illegal in the eyes of the rule book. Again, same class or not, if you are about to be lapped for the first time, or the 100th time, you must move over.
@780Motorsports I like how you put it. It is 50/50. In Le Mans racing, you can move and block however you choose, and I see nothing wrong with what Gene (it's Gene right?) did. On the other hand, what Gene did was pushing the envelope of what is allowed. Had he put the Audi into the wall, there would be some consequences.
@780Motorsports Like they said, it would have been "alright" if they were fighting for the lead and they were on the same lap... the whole issue arose because the Peugeot was blocking even though he was a few laps down on the Audi, shit like that is just plain unsportsmanlike.
@denisqmystery just a question...are you french?:) just joking I'm from Monza and I saw a lot of race and for what I remember a blue flag is always a blue flag...
@andreabenitoromano85 not, I'm Belgian, and I am not supporter of Peugeot, but I think that's this type of race is very particular and people doesn't seems ton know it...
And you have to notice that the rules in Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Le Mans, Sebring,etc... are different for the moment : that's exactly why the FIA wants to make a world championship
Yes, the rules specifically state that it's up to the trailing car to get past. Track positions are irrelevant. You are allowed to follow the racing line, you are allowed to brake early if you need to, etc. This is probably the biggest distinction between Le Mans and every other form of racing. Considering the speed differences between cars, these are quite sensible rules.
I really don't see anything except some desperate, professional and interesting racing by both those guys.
@denisqmystery it certainly matters if the guy blocking is laps behind the guy trying to pass. I don't mind blocking, but when you're 5 laps down to the guy you're blocking... the only word for that is IDIOCY.
@denisqmystery No, it's not normal, and it's unacceptable. When you are overlapped by the fourth time, it means you are clearly slower, so stewards show blue flags (as seen on the vid) and you must let the other car overtake you. I don´t know of any motorsport that allow an overlapped car to meaningfully slow down the leading one...
@denisqmystery i believe the important part here is that even if they were in the same category they were 1 lap or something ahead and Peugeot prototype should let the Audi car pass cause they were too far from each other, and the Peugeot car xust make the Audi car lose time! they are bad losers! =)
@denisqmystery Peugeot were obviously telling 908 8 and 7 to block the Audi from over taking to try and give number 9 car an advantage. Team Oreca, Rebellion racing and Kronos racing didn't try to pull any dangerous manouvers like the team Peugeot. The pugs were just sad and desperate.
@denisqmystery Ok, what if the Peugeot succeed in running the Audi off the road? Would that still be okay to you? Personally, as it is in this clip, I would send the Peugeot a HEAVY stop-go penalty with a STRONG reminding of what is and is not allowed (attempting to crash faster, laps ahead cars is NOT), and tell them that if they did it again, the could DEFINITELY say goodbye to the victory (and maybe next year)(words with big letters are not shout, just pointing them out to make my opinion)
As if the nature of auto racing wasn't dangerous enough. scary to see people playing with other peoples lives. what a shame to this kinda shit at this level. Just reckless regard for safety.
I am a fan of Audi but I dont really care about this. Puegeot is just trying to win. There is no way you can regulate this anyway. If you want to take it as discourteous then so be it. I just see it as competitive.
@adulby: As in any sport, there is a certain etiquette. If the puegot was actually racing the audi for a position, this would have been controversial, but since he was blocking the audi so his teammate could catch up, this is just unacceptable.
So glad Audi won. Peugeot denied that a blue flag (passing flag) ever went up, but at 0:23 it's as clear as day. As for Audi doing that to Peugeot before, uh, when did they ever pull something like this, with a car that's laps behind, with a blue flag, with only 1 car remaining? Think someone else is the fanboy.
To almost crash the one remaining Audi, with a car that's not even fighting for the top position, disgusting.
@diggono fraid not, french race, french officals, french rules :( last year when they did exactly the same thing they even gave warnings to audi for using some excessive curb to try and over take the pug that was 3 laps down,,,,,,,,
shame as some good french drivers and teams out there yet this bunch of tossers just piss us off every year.

@andreabenitoromano85 not, I'm Belgian, and I am not supporter of Peugeot, but I think that's this type of race is very particular and people doesn't seems ton know it...
And you have to notice that the rules in Monza, Spa-Francorchamps, Le Mans, Sebring,etc... are different for the moment : that's exactly why the FIA wants to make a world championship
denisqmystery 8 months ago
Yes, the rules specifically state that it's up to the trailing car to get past. Track positions are irrelevant. You are allowed to follow the racing line, you are allowed to brake early if you need to, etc. This is probably the biggest distinction between Le Mans and every other form of racing. Considering the speed differences between cars, these are quite sensible rules.
I really don't see anything except some desperate, professional and interesting racing by both those guys.
surge9000 8 months ago
@denisqmystery it certainly matters if the guy blocking is laps behind the guy trying to pass. I don't mind blocking, but when you're 5 laps down to the guy you're blocking... the only word for that is IDIOCY.
erasetoimprove 8 months ago
@denisqmystery No, it's not normal, and it's unacceptable. When you are overlapped by the fourth time, it means you are clearly slower, so stewards show blue flags (as seen on the vid) and you must let the other car overtake you. I don´t know of any motorsport that allow an overlapped car to meaningfully slow down the leading one...
sennaswilliams 8 months ago
@denisqmystery you are stupid the peugeosts its a few laps down this is not a batle position

@denisqmystery See reply to 780Motorsports post.
stuligan 7 months ago
@denisqmystery i believe the important part here is that even if they were in the same category they were 1 lap or something ahead and Peugeot prototype should let the Audi car pass cause they were too far from each other, and the Peugeot car xust make the Audi car lose time! they are bad losers! =)
jspinto2007 7 months ago
@denisqmystery Peugeot were obviously telling 908 8 and 7 to block the Audi from over taking to try and give number 9 car an advantage. Team Oreca, Rebellion racing and Kronos racing didn't try to pull any dangerous manouvers like the team Peugeot. The pugs were just sad and desperate.
MujaRagHeadKillaUK 7 months ago
@denisqmystery Well you know what they say, Block me once, but dont block me twice.
Pugeot No.7 blocked 6 times!!!
If this was BTCC or it was a shorter race and they were on the same lap ect. the Audi would have put the Pugeot in the wall most probabily
LegoRacer41 5 months ago 2
@denisqmystery Ok, what if the Peugeot succeed in running the Audi off the road? Would that still be okay to you? Personally, as it is in this clip, I would send the Peugeot a HEAVY stop-go penalty with a STRONG reminding of what is and is not allowed (attempting to crash faster, laps ahead cars is NOT), and tell them that if they did it again, the could DEFINITELY say goodbye to the victory (and maybe next year)(words with big letters are not shout, just pointing them out to make my opinion)

Ouch ! But Ferrari did the worst form for blocking, and dangerous too this year. ; )

As if the nature of auto racing wasn't dangerous enough. scary to see people playing with other peoples lives. what a shame to this kinda shit at this level. Just reckless regard for safety.

Pause it at 23 secs and you can see the blue flag being waved at the Peugot. Perhaps this distracted the driver?

2011 Le Mans really a very tough race for Audi.....
cambiechan 8 months ago
I am a fan of Audi but I dont really care about this. Puegeot is just trying to win. There is no way you can regulate this anyway. If you want to take it as discourteous then so be it. I just see it as competitive.
adulby 8 months ago
@adulby Erm, except there are very specific rules about passing.
sugasugaki 8 months ago
@adulby: As in any sport, there is a certain etiquette. If the puegot was actually racing the audi for a position, this would have been controversial, but since he was blocking the audi so his teammate could catch up, this is just unacceptable.
arena2101 8 months ago
