Beautiful breed. I've been considering doing this with my pit but I am terrified that he's going to get hurt - it looks really hard on them. Am I wrong?
they wouldnt pull if they didnt want to. i love pit bulls and yes they have that will to please their owner but some people just use that in the wrong way. its NEVER the dogs fault. obviously these dogs love what theyre doing. im tired of people that say stuff about the breed but are actually clueless. you can take ANY dog and turn it into how you want it to be. pitbulls are amazing dogs and media needs to leave them alone.

They love what they do and love the praise they get for doing what is fun for them. They are working dogs and in order to be happy and not be DEPRESSED, they have to work and exercise. This is exercise. Watch any "Stong man" comp and you will see humans pulling things like that from extended lines. Learn before you speak.

You SHOULD absolutely train your dog. just showing up and baiting them with something isnt real weight pulling. baited dogs dont pull as reliably or with as good of style as trained dogs. poor style -- sling shotting, bouncing and lunging in the harness -- leads to increased chance of injuries. as for when to start training, I start at 8 months with a proper wpull hrness and very light drags.
how young can thay be to start like pullin a lil brick around.. i gota blue pit and hes like 10 11 weeks and i cut a brick in half its really lil but i got him pulling that around so hes muscles start to grow.. but should when he is that young
@4weelierkid There's no need to start trying to put muscle on him yet. You don't want to put stress on their growing joints or you could end up with a lame dog. It's always a good idea to wait to do anything like that until they're a year old.
anyone know what I can buy to put muscel on my female pit she weighs only 40 lbs and she is 4 years old. She has a 6 1/2 foot vertical jump and is very fast I don't want her to lose all her speed though.

i miss my pit had him since a pup and lived for 16 years never mean to any other dog and loved kids never even bit anyone took him everywhere and he loved pulling. You know pits are great dogs when your son is 4 jumping up and down on a pit and all the pit ever does is licks his face and wags his tail.
To all of those 'oh, this is wrong and it hurts the dog' people. It's sick and wrong to make the dogs sit around the house bored out of their minds. Like the border collie, these dogs are working animals. They love to work, and they love to be praised for doing a good job.

I'm not trying to start an arguement, but this can't be good for the dogs? Does it not put way too much strain on them? If i'm wrong sorry, i've never been able to see one of these dogs as they're banned where I live.
the harness helps to spread out the pulling weight, and the dogs that do this are not younger then 18 months letting the body grow to it full size. There is a lot of training that goes into weight pulling. Starting at a young age you put the harness on the dog(no weight), then you work with them getting use to the harness. Then around 18 months or so you add a little weight and build from there. It takes a lot of work and not all pits can do it.
ur dog has to be registered and the kennel club u registered it make events like weight pulling jumping numerous obstacle courses and if ur dog wins now he is a champ n when it has puppies they are champion blood lines..
these dogs are the best... so much love and energy.. I used to be afraid of pitbulls, I lost my shitzui and wanted another dog.. did a couple months of research and found the pittbull to be best for me... so i gave it a try.. NOW I LOVE THIS BREED.. anyone that has some issues of being afraid of pits.. i suggest you pick up a book and give it a read.. i bet you'll change your mind when you find out how these dogs think :)
i agree weight pulling is a gud way 2 exersice strong dogs i hav 2 american bulldogs and they both pull,but here we aint allowed 2 stand infront and encourage them we hav 2 stand by the side and the dog has 2 want 2 pull,

r u kidding me!? first off these dogs have the perfect build for this...second of for those of us who own apbts that are actually true to the breed. pulling is one of the very few things that will actually drain ur dog from energy. mine could tire ANY human out easily. they seem to have never ending energy and i try to get in at least 5 hours of exercise a day with them. apbts normally love pulling look at the tails wag! i guess u need to be around a working apbt to see how much they love this.
its not that bad its a great way of exercise for a crazy strong dog breed its not like abuse and its better than what people usually do with pit bulls fighting them and when they lose leaving them in an alley to die....no thats disgusting

Nice to see those pitties doing what they love doing, they really are great dogs, sadly the are are banned in my country because the B.S.L. is rife in the U.K. but if we keep signing petitions and showing the world that these dogs are loving and loyal friends if looked after correctly it could all change, and the B.S.L. will be a thing of the past.

not usually. english bull terriers aren't usually popular weight pullers for some reason. i've never had one myself, so i couldn't tell you why, but my guess is probably because they're not so good at weight pulling. but then, tons of other dogs pull better than pit bulls, too, don't they? (i.e. whopper dogs)
bulldogs and terriers (thought to be the black-and-tan terrier). but don't forget, there are at least 3 breeds considered 'pit bulls', all of which have slightly different backgrounds
I think these dogs are just awesomme! but they are banned here in the UK, BUT theya re still around, infact there is one that lives at the end of my street that gets walked at night LOL. The ban has no affect anyway, over here staffs are soooo popular, and the pit bulls are known as 'irish staffs'. A lot of them are crossed in lurchers, mainly with greyhounds to hunt foxes and dear.

You get a weight pull harness from harnessmakers. You can't get them from the pet shop. Don't get them off Ebay either. Get one custom sized for your dogs. (Wait until they're closer to a year to start working them, though.) CDpits makes harnesses. So does Tablerock, Stillwater Kennel Supply, Alaskan Dream, MoPulldogs. Lots of places. Google weight pull harness and you'll find plenty. Just make sure you get them from someone who pulls dogs and knows how the harness is supposed to work.
This is a great job for this breed to do, I hope one day to own a pit and this would be an excellent exercise for them. I know such high energy breeds need the stimulation.
Here's a thought, knau1234, do you workout? Most doctors will tell you that it's good for you, as long as you do it safely. It's good for your circulatory and respiratory system, aid in digestion. Basically, you live a longer healthier life. So what's wrong with that? It's good for the dogs as long as their given a healthy diet and ample rest. Just like it is for humans.
Have you thought that perhaps there is more to the sport than appearance? These dogs thrive on hard work, they demand it. One does the breed a greater disservice by sticking it in an apartment and denying it hard exercise. What is the fundamental difference between what you see here, and the horse jumping video in your favorites? That kind of thing probably results in more injuries than weight pull, but people still do it for competition, and because their animals enjoy the activity.
Umm... have you ever BEEN to a weightpulling competetion??? The dogs love it. American pit bull terriers are an active breed- and they get bored if they're not doing something to work them out.
They LOVE to pull! I volunteer at a local animal shelter all the time and the pits are the hardest to walk for that reason (none of them are ever leashed trained). I just take them to the play pen instead.

i miss my pit had him since a pup and lived for 16 years never mean to any other dog and loved kids never even bit anyone took him everywhere and he loved pulling. You know pits are great dogs when your son is 4 jumping up and down on a pit and all the pit ever does is licks his face and wags his tail.

To all of those 'oh, this is wrong and it hurts the dog' people. It's sick and wrong to make the dogs sit around the house bored out of their minds. Like the border collie, these dogs are working animals. They love to work, and they love to be praised for doing a good job.

I'm not trying to start an arguement, but this can't be good for the dogs? Does it not put way too much strain on them? If i'm wrong sorry, i've never been able to see one of these dogs as they're banned where I live.

the harness helps to spread out the pulling weight, and the dogs that do this are not younger then 18 months letting the body grow to it full size. There is a lot of training that goes into weight pulling. Starting at a young age you put the harness on the dog(no weight), then you work with them getting use to the harness. Then around 18 months or so you add a little weight and build from there. It takes a lot of work and not all pits can do it.

ur dog has to be registered and the kennel club u registered it make events like weight pulling jumping numerous obstacle courses and if ur dog wins now he is a champ n when it has puppies they are champion blood lines..

these dogs are the best... so much love and energy.. I used to be afraid of pitbulls, I lost my shitzui and wanted another dog.. did a couple months of research and found the pittbull to be best for me... so i gave it a try.. NOW I LOVE THIS BREED.. anyone that has some issues of being afraid of pits.. i suggest you pick up a book and give it a read.. i bet you'll change your mind when you find out how these dogs think :)

r u kidding me!? first off these dogs have the perfect build for this...second of for those of us who own apbts that are actually true to the breed. pulling is one of the very few things that will actually drain ur dog from energy. mine could tire ANY human out easily. they seem to have never ending energy and i try to get in at least 5 hours of exercise a day with them. apbts normally love pulling look at the tails wag! i guess u need to be around a working apbt to see how much they love this.

Wow..what a great way to keep our pitties well exercised and well socialized. This is exactly what we need to bring positive attention to our breed. I am now looking into how to train my girls and hope to find something that they love to do. Thanks for th video. Loved it!!!!

Nice to see those pitties doing what they love doing, they really are great dogs, sadly the are are banned in my country because the B.S.L. is rife in the U.K. but if we keep signing petitions and showing the world that these dogs are loving and loyal friends if looked after correctly it could all change, and the B.S.L. will be a thing of the past.

not usually. english bull terriers aren't usually popular weight pullers for some reason. i've never had one myself, so i couldn't tell you why, but my guess is probably because they're not so good at weight pulling. but then, tons of other dogs pull better than pit bulls, too, don't they? (i.e. whopper dogs)

I think these dogs are just awesomme! but they are banned here in the UK, BUT theya re still around, infact there is one that lives at the end of my street that gets walked at night LOL. The ban has no affect anyway, over here staffs are soooo popular, and the pit bulls are known as 'irish staffs'. A lot of them are crossed in lurchers, mainly with greyhounds to hunt foxes and dear.

You get a weight pull harness from harnessmakers. You can't get them from the pet shop. Don't get them off Ebay either. Get one custom sized for your dogs. (Wait until they're closer to a year to start working them, though.) CDpits makes harnesses. So does Tablerock, Stillwater Kennel Supply, Alaskan Dream, MoPulldogs. Lots of places. Google weight pull harness and you'll find plenty. Just make sure you get them from someone who pulls dogs and knows how the harness is supposed to work.

Here's a thought, knau1234, do you workout? Most doctors will tell you that it's good for you, as long as you do it safely. It's good for your circulatory and respiratory system, aid in digestion. Basically, you live a longer healthier life. So what's wrong with that? It's good for the dogs as long as their given a healthy diet and ample rest. Just like it is for humans.

Have you thought that perhaps there is more to the sport than appearance? These dogs thrive on hard work, they demand it. One does the breed a greater disservice by sticking it in an apartment and denying it hard exercise. What is the fundamental difference between what you see here, and the horse jumping video in your favorites? That kind of thing probably results in more injuries than weight pull, but people still do it for competition, and because their animals enjoy the activity.

They LOVE to pull! I volunteer at a local animal shelter all the time and the pits are the hardest to walk for that reason (none of them are ever leashed trained). I just take them to the play pen instead.
