  • I remember this song growing up in South Africa. It was banned so we had great joy in playing it really loudly and singing even louder. God bless Madiba and all who learn from him!

  • When Nelson Mandela says "jump", you fucking jump.

  • A bit of "trivia" for you all; it was the CIA under George Bush who tipped off the SA government as to Mandela's location which led to his arrest. God Bless America, NOT!

  • Nelson Mandela was release from prison the day I was born :)

  • notice the dance moves that the teens are mimicking today

  • Is this the Specials without Terry Hall? Just Jerry Dammers' version of the band? It's a noble song, but pales in comparison to the "real" Specials material.

  • Is this the Specials without Terry Hall? Just Jerry Dammers' version of the band?

  • this song is actually really good but it still explains apartheid

  • apart from this song being completely irrelivent now that robben island isnt a prison anymore. :) whoever said Nelson Mandela is a terrorist is a stupid pratt.

  • Waouuuuuuuuuuuu je ne savais pas qui il existait un clip je suis très agréablement suprise :d énorme . merci pour the clip

  • Amazing found this on the end of an old specials cd, now my favourite song for the last 3 days. Has it all: a good story with happy ending (now), soulful uplifting yet emotional singing and music that you can dance to all at the same time!

    brilliant song and message

  • i remember dancing and singing around the lounge to this music when i was a kind in the 80s/90s my mum used to play

    love ska and reggae :)

yes indeed FREEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE NELSON MANDELA AMEN 4 JUSTICE

  • i'm a white english man but nelson mandela is a world wide legand. if it wasn't for people like him, martin luther king and more recent barak obama the world wouldn't be as close as it is today

  • @rogerlegend1

    one word...WIGGER

  • heed the causes of the ANC, only one man in a large army

  • hisroyalstigness - did you know thatcher also caused global warming and the fact it cost me £3.50 a pint tonight!!!! Bring back Atlee!!!!!

  • what shocks me most about arpartheid is thatcher's response:

she agreed with it and made no attempt to stop it, while young tories wore badges saying "hang mandela"

undoubtedly one of britain's worst primeministers

  • I am not black or South African, and did not understand Apartheid at the time, But when Nelson stands to talk. EVRYBODY stands and listens. We could do with a few more Nelson Mandelas around the world.

  • @lockie72

Yeah, right. We need more communist terrorists who could have left jail any time he wanted, all he had to do was renounce violence (and he got a Noble peace prize for refusing to renounce violence). I suppose prison was better than Soweto. Meanwhile his wife winnie and the "Nelson mandela football team" were busy murdering black kids who wouldn't join the Soviet funded ANC......I am white and English, but I will always remember the poor kid named Stompie, that they murdered.

  • @LDNn15 He actually said "What freedom am I being offered while the organisation of the people remains banned? Only free men can negotiate. A prisoner cannot enter into contracts." Basically if he traded his personal freedom and stopped fighting then the black people of Africa would never be free.

  • @LDNn15 Yes his side did do some terrible tings but there is no straight good and evil. Things aren't black and white. There will always be grey patches. Mandela himself, for lack of a better word, chastised his followers for using voilence in that way. He actually planned to blow up buildings with no one in side them. He did it to make a statement and, again for lack of better word, intimade the white politians who wanted to keep the black majority of South Africa under their rule. I'm white.

  • @LDNn15

Calling him a terrorist says far more about you than it does about him. You couldn't care less about Stompie Moeketsi. Mandela showed more restraint and dignity than any contemporary leader, and the stance he took on release from jail saved a nation from a bloodbath. You condemn a man who sacrificed a huge amount for peace, but say nothing about the regime that tried to develop biological weapons and cultivate diseases that would work on the black population.

  • Great and beautiful song.

How sad that the world was so blind that it could not see for so long.

But, Mandela won in the end after all his suffering.

  • free nelson! Come On! Let's get together and raise an army to free nelson - he must have been locked up for ages now?

  • @Sparkjulio Are you serious? because he was released around 20 years ago.

  • this is the SPECIAL AKA, NOT THE SPECIALS

  • @whackawhack Agreed that they were calling themselves "The Special AKA" at the time, but it's the same band. That's why this is on The Specials official YouTube channel. ^_^

  • @whackawhack

The Special AKA is the same thing as The Specials.

The Specials just sometimes go by The Special AKA

  • @Bieji The Specials AKA was after Terry left

  • @Bieji Specials started as the Special AKA, then went to the Specials, and when they separated, some went Special AKA and Fun Boy 3.

  • This is actually The Special AKA, not the Specials.

  • wow, amazing,,,

Could anyone please tell me when this song was done?

  • who was the lead singer please?

  • @hexhamman the lead singers name is stan campbell

  • @mapsnaps Oh, get the fuck out of here.

  • @mapsnaps Nelson Mandela wanted equality for everyone, white or black. he did not do anything against whites, even though South Africa is now doing that

  • Stop the Boer genocide!

  • Top tune, had this on 10" vinyl at the time.

  • i love this!!! it was stuck in my head all week!!! <3

  • My friend showed me about this video, I have the song in my cell but if you look closely you can see that "the jerk" dance comes from this video or aka SKA music

  • This fine tune quickly found itself on heavy rotation on KROQ in it's release year of 1984. I know it seems like it was earlier. A revolutionary classic, no doubt!

  • Special AKA

  • I did heard this song in the 80`s on the radio, and saw all the violence on the TV of apartheid. This song had a very big impact on my and the rest of the world,it was the beginning, that South Africa where the last country white apartheid.

Apartheid is dutch word by the way.

    With love from Holland

  • haha no way! check barak obama song.

    its like the same thing.

barack obama, yes we can, is the chorus.

  • Love this song when it came out.Had no idea of its importance then (to young) now its a Legend of a song just like Nelson.........Nelson or Barak I think Nelson would win by a fag paper.

  • Barak isn't fit to shine Mandela's shoes, lockie.

  • such an amazing intro and song love it :)

  • A very important song.

  • Sorry BoekeBoerke, but your personal actions have nothing to do with it. You benefited from a system that denied rights to black Africans and Asians, simply on the basis of color. So while you may be a good person, that's the legacy that you must deal with.

  • silly gardener...why didn't he drink scotch or champagne like a normal person?

  • Say no to racism

  • i was born and raised under the apartheid regime and i was NEVER instructed to beat, kill, torture, etc.... black people. We didn't have a legion of black slaves... we had one gardener who used to pass out from drinking methanol.... SO PLEASE STOP JUDGING ME AS RASCIST! i get crap all the time like: " you are a white south-african so you must be a rascist". Please do not judge people like this because it also rascism. (love the song though...)

  • Yes, you did have a legion of black slaves. They weren't personally owned by you. They were collectively owned by The State. You reaped the benefits. You think you would have had the living standard you had without all them coloureds working for scraps (and getting killed, beaten etc every now and then)?

  • and I suppose the rubber on your tyres, the diamond in your granny's ring, the verry beans you eat with your köttbullar are all fairtrade I suppose?

  • look STop fighting like!

  • Huh? dont get it :(

  • I met the man!!!

  • wow! did you met nelson mandela!

  • I was working on Paradise Island(Bahamas) and he was there as a guest of Sol Kerzner. He was strolling through the casino with another guy(presumably a bodyguard)and he stopped by me and a colleague and chatted for about 5 minutes.Charming and delightful fellow.

  • I wonder if ol' Sol Kerzner afforded him the same respect and support during the apartied years (i dont know, but some how i doubt it). At that time the brirish primeminster regarded him as a terrorist (her husband had many business interests in the country). Its a shame, even now, the nouveau riche in the country have joined forces with the old business elite and continue to steal from South Africans leaving te poor to a desparate life, crime etc...

  • This song popped into my head last night, and this morning I had to hear it...

After not having heard it in years I was delighted to hear that it sounds as fresh and it ever did...

Bottom line however, is that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

JusticeNature, I hear what you're saying. It is a crying shame, ain't it?

  • yep, its a tragedy, this country could be the beacon of Africa. I recently watched a video from 2001 by John Pilger (on youtube) its a few years old but describes the issue of economic apartied. The few blacks have teamed up with the old guard and shamefully rape and pillage the resources of the country. South Africa needs a revolution.

  • Too bad most people think the revolution already happened and that things are hunky dory in South Africa.

There is a long way to go before things will ever be 'hunky dory'...

Thanks for the enlightening the ignorant here; real change will only come about when people get angry enough.

  • I agree, only the people can and do make a difference. I recently came across a docuementary regarding the recent struggles in Liberia, W. Africa. A shocking heart stopping documentary title 'Pray the Devil back to hell' A must watch of how the women of Liberia joined forces, toppled a dictator and elected the first women president of an African country. A must watch (trailer on youtube and the DVD on there website 'praythedevilbacktohell'). Also, a must act. I hope I and other have the streng

  • ...strengh to do something to help heal the brutal world we are living in.

  • I couldn't agree more!

  • In 1995 they recorded "Free Bobby Sands!" but for some reason it didnt have the same commercial appeal.

  • Comment removed

  • haha. It's bloody political correctness gone mad.

  • Hmm... maybe that was because Bobby Sands was a murderer and all... not meaning to be offensive to anybody, but if you know people who were killed and maimed in the bombs, you dont have much sympathy!

  • you have a small brain sir

  • fuck off the lot of u this is a brilliat tune even though its specialsAKA but terry hall is the best man sings all secials songs fukin brilliant an these were a skinhead band skinheads listend to it fuin bsik this music

  • Someone fetch this man some full stops.

  • go nelson mandela!

  • the specials never sung this song it was in fact the specialsAKA as the band had split up and they was going to use copyright if they kept the same name so they added an AKA so they couldn't use copyright

  • Almost but not quite, The Specials and The Special AKA Band were Jerry Dammers bands, they started out as The Special AKA, then changed to The Specials, but after Terry Hall, Neville Staples and Lynval Golding left to form The Fun Boy Three, the band reverted to The Special AKA Band.

  • agreed. it's gone to shit with crime and stuff, and most Africans are still in poverty. And the ANC are pretty much guranteed a majority, even though they clearly arent fit to govern. SA needs a guy like De Klerk or Botha.

  • ur both talking bollocks. there is less poverty now and it decreasing all the tym. just now its visible whereas it used to be tuckd away so that white people didnt see it. There is poverty and crime but it takes a long tym for change to take place. Whatever you say, a democratic society where everyone has a vote is ALWAYS better than a society where 10% are treated as far superior to the rest. end of.

  • no doubt, democracy is the correct way to run a country. The system in RSA pretty much gurantees the ANC power though, and my point is that they arent fit to run everything. Hence the shitty condition of the country now. Crime was never that bad back in the 60s, when there was a capable government in power.

  • thats just not true. maybe cos now crime effects everyone because its a more integrated society. i see the massacre of 100s of school children in soweto by the former government as a much more serious crime.

  • for sure, Sharpeville too. I'm not denying that the Apartheid governments were wrong, but they were better at dealing with certain aspects than today's ANC.

  • Botha was a dictator.. all the social problems are the result of apartheid .. there problems now and all poverty is the result of trying to fix the ruins of Apartheid..

That aint easy.. and yes problem exist and yes some of it can be blamed on the ANC but you to claim all problems caused by the ANC is wrong because many problems have roots in apartheid mess and segration that forced blacks in poor status compared to pale people.

  • what's the year 1983 or 1984
