to build one- it depends on a few things, access to workshop, time you get in the workshop, how much money you get to spend on it. Some people can take up to 10 years to build some.
No, if you look at the quadrant, there's still plenty of travel to go. I think we had about 3 Aristocraft coaches on, so the load wasn't heavy - for a Paddington!
I was once lucky enough to drive on this railway...with an engine which only had a hand brake on the tender...the tunnel was, shall we say, 'interesting'.
Nope. But you do need a 'boiler certificate' which each club is competent to issue (there is a fairly standard test). This seems to work as I have never heard of a model locomotive boiler explosion in the UK. At 90psi (six times atmospheric pressure) this would do serious damage to anyone close if it happened.
That would just be the cost of Club Membership, I guess. It is usually pretty small, particularly if you think about all the facilities which clubs have, including tracks and sometimes workshops. Plus they are friendly!
I drove Kate the Romulus over that once when running all the stock back to the tunnel. Suffice to say progress was very slow through the tunnel as I was at the limit of adhesion and when I hit the hump I suddenly found myself giving the vac brake everything!
nice long ride!

Yes, you can see I put some brake on before we enter the long tunnel - chicken that I am!
