Somewhere in my house I have a VHS tape my family recorded in Christmas 2005 when the BBC tribute series about Dave Allen was on, and it has tons more material than is on YouTube! I must find it and convert it for everyone who loves this brilliant man!
"And he sees that Adam is happy..." - huge pause, audience eating from the palm of his hand and immediate;y get the joke that's coming! CLASSIC Dave Allen, sadly missed. I sneakily used to watch him on the black & white portable telly, as my mother would have had a fit!
However! She watched him as well (on the colour tv mind!) it turned out, and laughed along with the rest of us!
"He's talking to a woman, for God's sake!" - just brilliant!!!!
God forbid...LOL. But if ever i get put before a court of law and have to swear on the bible i will make sure the judge and jury watch thid first..Haha..
@SaudiPunker It's not because of god that you're a Muslim. It's because your parents were Muslims. What do you think your religion would have been if your parents had been Catholics, or if you had been born in a different area of the world? Do you think you would have been a Muslim then?
I watched this guy for the first time in the seventies, and laughed my head off. His body language is absolutely marvelous, like John Cleese. I admire Dave Allen intensly. Most of his humor is timeless, many of his scetches are also great but he is at his best with a glass of whisky and a cigarette in his hand. Also, watch how he is dressed, immaculately. not like the trash todays TV personalities put on them. Dave Allen hade style in abundance, style and humour sharp as a wip. RIP Dave Allen
Sad to have lost him. There are so few entertainers left today that can entertain without offending the audience. He was one of those that made everybody laugh.
I know what you mean. I was watching one about a month ago, and he was really rude, the way he spoke to the audience made me glad I wasn't actually there. If I went to see a comedian it'd be to laugh not to be laughed at. It isn't nice, and it doesn't help bullying. Dave Allen was a true great, he was so funny and very unique.
This man is a pure saint! I love this video clip, it makes so much sense. Good to see tha he can look and laugh at his own religion. May he always be remembered.
The best comedian ever... actually didn't mind a bad leg surgery as a kid because I was out of school for 2 months and every night after my parents went to bed.... I would scoot n slide around until I could reach the TV and turn on Dave Allen At Large... Only joy of the day, even tho it took like 5 minutes to reach the dern TV
What a great comedian! There is one particular sketch where Dave recounts how he learnt how to tell the sign of the cross. It was during a funeral and says he was a young boy then an thought he heard the priest say "In the name of the father, the son and INTO THE HOLE HE GOES". Anyone has that sketch availabvle for posting here?
That`s not in Graham McCann`s book either, which is supposedly the monologues as he performed them.I wonder why it gets cut out? Because people would not get the mid-80`s reference? Bizarre.
Remember watching this with one of the Catholic Church's most ardent Stormtroopers a.k.a Granny. Whilst I (aged 10) was pmsl Herr Granny was giving me the evil eye....I was promptly sent to bed....still sniggering.
p.s Only kidding Granny - I still blame Dave Allen for getting me into trouble.
yeah not in the same league probably due to their different approaches to comedy but still two very funny gents lol you say Dylan wrote a tribute to Dave?
@femaleanimal A perfect sum up of one of the most interesting and provocative Irishmen ever - except Allen let us all think it was whiskey in that glass... turns out it was ginger ale all along! Ah well. Shame to waste a perfectly good national stereotype I suppose. :)
Out-frikin'_standing!!! If it weren't for You Tube & folks like you, I might have never seen this. We here in the US (well, at least in Chicago) only got to see his earlier BBC series "Dave Allen at Large" Thank you very much. Please post more>
As I`ve said on many of these clips, his sketches were inconsistent, but it was the monologues where he really excelled, so it`s good to see one on here. Think I`ll dig out the one about giving up smoking, which is brilliant.
Genius.
I used to watch this in my teens. My dad roaring with laughter. Fond memories.

Adam and Eve were 100% "clean" until Eve got pregnant. Then she invented:
1. Eating for two (creating human waste).
2. All diseases known to Man in the 9 months.
So, women are the cause of all problems.

Hi. I did a Google search and found what he said. Here it is:-
"He could dismiss several schools of philosophy by shifting slightly in his chair or toting his whisky glass.
"When he adjusted his waistcoat or shot his cuffs, dragons of unreason gasped and died at his feet. Who was funnier, or more loveable?
"He was the uncle to end all uncles, childlike yet oracular and possessed of a ravenous appetite for human folly."
