Beautiful, but disturbing. His playing is so coked out and almost maniacally crunchy and bright. It is still one of my favorite performances, just so sad.
Jazz legend Bill Evans, R.I.P. Jazz piano pros and students try to emulate your style and dazzling chops. I have a long, long way to go, if ever, even come close...
@billroue what a sweet notion! read some remarks on bill evan's "longest suicide". still a mystery to me, how he made each performace so alive:-) maybe he was "god" :-))
Check out the drummer's gear!!! So awesomely cool!!! A 4 piece with hats, crash and ride!!! WOOT!!! Finally someone prepared to play an instrument rather than a musical accessory!!!! Thumbs up for the kit, let alone this being so awesome with Bill Evans!!!
@toyotayaruno hey, you should try looking for a copy of The Real Book. There are multiple editions that would probably have this song in it. I'm japanese too, but I like in California! its great that people in japan love jazz so much. Bill Evans is my favorite pianist.
The memory of that concert vividly comes back to me every time I hear this last trio. He was alone sitting on a bar stool during a break. I saw how puffy his hands were and pretty big guy he was, less 3 or 4 feet away... I still regret that I did not have a courage to introduce myself and at least thank him for all the beautiful music... I hope I can meet him in heaven or hell some day... or somewhere in between...xxx
I had a great fotune to hear Bill Evans a week or so before he passed away at Fat Tuesday's or Blue Note in early September of 1980. (can't remember which one now) I sat for two sessions for the first night, went back for the last day. Of course, he was announced to be out of commission, substituted by a young apprentice... with Marc Johnson and Joe Labarbera. It took almost 2 or 3 months for Bill's passing to my knowledge.
negro or white it doesnt matter. period!!! you guys dont love music if you you talk about white or black! only amateurs talk bout that and people that dont have any ideea what music its all about! bill was one of the best and it will remain this way for eternity.
This is great, I love this video. I love that people out there are willing to share this stuff with us. Bill Evans is a jazz legend, listen to his playing, look at the guys he played with (they were the best), this guy was magical on the piano.
There are some comments on this video that are so damned stupid and mindless. Who the hell still uses the word "negro" to describe people now days? Pull your head out of your ass, it's the 21st century! Enough for now.
Bill here has turned into very person he resented back in the 60s( please watch his workshop video). simple interpretation and variation that follows was his trademark. but i guess playing the same damn song for 20 plus year has made him lost his magic. Whoever said Bill's life is the longest suicide of the human history. RIP Bill. I still listen to you everyday!
Bill is awesome, that goes without saying, but DAMN that was some silky smooth drumming there. i was thoroughly entertained and a little surprised that Bill stepped out of his usual introspective stuff into some more high energy, upbeat pieces.
the waltz for debby version is one of my all time favorite jazz performances. this one is waaaay different (did paul motian ever take solos with bill?), but it's still awesome.
Por fin todos se están dando cuenta lo ATORRANTES que son los tipos del campo. Un año que les va mal hay que bancarlos con plata del estado, y cuando les va muy bien no quieren compartir las buenas. Yeah this might be the wrong place to look for that kinda feel. Bill Evans is heavily influenced by French Western classical music and it mixes beautifully with his jazz feel. If I were you I would check out Oscar Peterson.
I had the good fortune to hear Bill Evans with this trio at Ronnie Scotts in London; I was working opposite, suporting and accompanying singer Julie Amiet. Every set the trio played was wonderful. Sadly Bill passed away a few weeks later. May he forever Rest in Peace. Ken Baldock
Thanks so much for posting, I grew up and went to school with Joe Labarbera but haven't seen him in 40 years. The drum solo brought back great memories!
Wow, a little fast for me. Still great, of course. The version videotaped for New Jersey Public TV seven years earlier, with Eddie Gomez and Marty Morrell (elsewhere on YouTube) evokes more feeling.
I think this is the epitome of a jazz trio. I was priviledged to hear this same Bill Evans trio shortly after this concert, at the University of North Texas, Denton, in my first year there. Then, sadly, not long after that, Bill died.
Thanks for this video. It brought back memories of an unforgettable concert by an unforgettable jazz master and his group. (btw, Marc Johnson had spend just one year at North Texas School of Music before Evans snatched him up.)
Beautiful, but disturbing. His playing is so coked out and almost maniacally crunchy and bright. It is still one of my favorite performances, just so sad.

Bill Evans is a great leader. He always control young players to perform sponteniously.
His pulse is very far from American negro plyaers but his one is exactly his own. Anyway he is a great piano player and a great creator.

Yeah, midi recordings do sound like crap, but their rhythm is perfectly exact.
I'm just saying that when Bill Evans plays, every little note goes right where it should. For instance, the thing he does in the bass clef at 2:13

Really awesome performance and Interpretation
Can anyone send me a link of a video where there is a Vocalist singing this song in like a med. swing tempo? Thankss
masymasmusic 2 years ago
Bill Evans had impeccable rhythm. At times he sounds as precise as a midi recording.
