  • In those days, the newspaper columnists (Walter Winchell among them) reported on a day-by-day basis, whom was in town (or about to be in town - this "town" being New York City). Sometimes a celebrity would slip in mostly unnoticed, but that was the more rare occasion. When the celebrity was quickly "unmasked," more often than not, it was more oweing to the panelist's knowledge of what they had recently seen in print. Still, a fun show, and nothing today seems match this entertainment value.

  • EVE WAS THE GREATEST. BETTER THAN LUCY(ALTHOUGH WAS ONE OF THE FUNNIEST), BETTER THAN MTM(AND THATS IMPOSSIBLE), BETTER THAN MARLO (WHO WAS SO WONDERFUL) BETTER THAN THEM ALL. INTELLIGENT, SEXY, FUNNIER THAN HELL AND SO VERY TALENTED. SHE EVEN MADE THE HORN SOUND FUNNY THE WAY SHE USED IT. THE MOST DISTINCTIVE VOICE EVER. LOVED HER SO MUCH. I DEARLY LOVE ALL THE SWEET AND HONEST COMMENTS THAT WERE POSTED ABOUT HER. THANK YOU ALL FOR RECOGNIZING A COMIC GENIUS WITH PERFECTLY TIMING.

  • I was 1 day old when this was on the air!

  • One of the funniest women ever!!!! I love her so much. Thank you for sharing

    Ginger

  • Considering Eve A was just visiting NY and not appearing in a show, I don't see how Dorothy could have possibly guessed her identity without having gotten a tip in advance.... unless her visit was by then being reported in the newspapers?

  • @gabsylv it is a process of elimination... 1955...a blonde starring in a TV show.. who has been in movies but not now... and was in a musical comedy on Broadway pre 1945... and it isn't Ann Sothern (Private Secretary) There is only one choice - Eve Arden. There is no magic or tip offs involved.

  • Her dress was very business like, compared to other females who wear elaborate and beautiful dresses.

  • Alligators have the right idea, They eat their young!!! (Ida. Mildred Pierce) I LOVE EVE ARDEN:-)

  • @roydk06 Eve was a wonderful talent. Peacae

  • Eve Arden's facial expressions are absolutely hilarious and her horn sounding was truly funny! Eve Arden was one of the best gems of comedy. She is sorely missed to this day. RIP Eve, and I know you're giving Heaven some wonderful laughter. :)

  • If she had spoken one word, they would have gotten her identity immediately. She had such a distinctive voice.

  • Classy lady and funny also. She was marvelous in Grease in 1978.

  • One of the best guests--love Eve--one of the funnest ladies in Hollywood.

  • one of the best guests ever!

  • One role I never saw again was when Eve played a nurse in the birth episode of Tabitha on Bewitched. As always she was charming.

  • We have pictures of you so called mooners..

  • She would appear in the movie "Grease" 23 years later.

  • @catholicpriest1 And she had one of the funniest lines: "if you can't be an athlete, be an athletic supporter." The puzzled look on her face after she said that is priceless! I can just look at her and laugh, knowing how funny she is!

  • Who were the two guest panelists?

  • @torchkit Betty Furness (mostly known for her work in commercials and later as a consumer advocate) and Sam Levinson (humorist, writer)

  • YOU'RE SOAKING IN IT!!!!!

  • @JPhilipRealEstate No, you're not........although Jan Miner sure looked like her, now that you mention it.

  • In some moments that nice lady reminds me Marlene Dietrich :-) I adored her in Mildred Pierce, BTW :-)

  • I adore Eve Arden...She is simply fantastic...

  • In The Marx Brothers at the Circus Eve played the girl who walked upside down on the ceiling in magnetic boots. And what a shame for TV that Christine Jorgenson was never a mystery guest on WML.

  • Eve Arden in her 60 year career, has crossed most media frontiers with supporting and leading roles. She will always be remembered for her role as a school teacher in the classic "Our miss Brooks.

  • Wow - it's amazing how she can be funny just by using a simple sound effect. We love her so much!

  • Eve Arden is my favorite character actress. She was so funny!

  • at :27 she winks at someone...who???

  • at :27 she winks at someone...who???

  • This clip (as have the other WML clips) left me smiling and feeling good. What a joy to watch amusing, entertaining and intelligent performers.

  • i adore eve arden!

  • Ah, marvelous - just marvelous! Thanks so much for posting.

These US WMLs seem so much classier than our British version of the 50s and 60s.

Quality TV - what a novelty.

  • What a wonderfully classy lady! Thanks for sharing this.

  • John Daly .. what a classy gentleman =)

I love it when he shares a little giggle with the guest!

  • she was so good in Mildred Pierce

  • thank you for releasing this on youtube.

What made the golden age of movies and TV was great character actors/actressess like Eve Arden.

I only wish the great TCM movie network would air classic TV shows as well, like Our Miss Brooks,

heck I would listen to a blank TV to hear the classic Our Miss Brooks radio shows or the Danny Kaye show featuring the great Eve Arden

  • You know, you can download just about all of Our Miss Brooks episodes online for free. I'm only 24 but OMB is one of my favoite OTR's!

  • I love her voice.

  • What a fun episode! I thought she was going to fool the panel. I always adored the late great Eve Arden. One of the classiest but funniest actresses who we've ever been blessed with. Her "Our Miss Brooks" was one of my favorite radio shows. Her ability to wisecrack & her dry wit were surpassed by only a few in the biz. I'm so grateful to you for posting this!

  • She would have made a great Glolden Girl!!

  • I always loved Eve Arden--especially in the movies. (Mildred Pierce + other wise-cracking roles). She seems to have been a no nonsense gal--straight up, no chaser.

    Delightful!

  • a very confident women and funny great actress i fell in love with her many years ago

  • you have good taste....she's wonderful! I've always likd her since first seeing her in the movie "Stage Door" and she was so great in "Anatomy of a Murder" plus others.

  • @4MaryAnna i loved her in stage door too!

  • @stickitupyourasteric she played in the mothers in law tv show i liked her too

  • You must learn from the mistakes of others. You can't possibly live long enough to make them all yourself.

  • signs that name just like she was a school teacher , I wonder if she was ever a school teacher ?

    (joke)

  • great in grease!

  • Lena Horne. HA! Good one.

  • i've just seen her in "Stage Door", totally gorgeous with an ironic, wit glance and that way she caressed that white cat all the time....

  • Love her. She is truly a great talent.

  • I would love to see her in "the Mothers in law" sit com again. That show hasn't rerun in years.

  • I saw an episode on Youtube...I remember that show when I was 5.

  • @etraig I agree Kay and Eve were at their best in that show, I wonder why Nick at Night or TV land haven't re run it? Itwas on when Nick at Night First started back in the 80's.

  • @xenafan234 exactly. listening to them and their impecable dialogues in the danny kaye radio show gets me every time. they were wonderful together. and so funny. they really brought the best out of eachother. the episode of the murdered meatball is a complete and total joy to listen to. i got tears in my eyes while laughing.

  • @bemoia yep! I agree

  • She was also brilliant and funny in the famous Brown Derby episode of 'I Love Lucy' with Bill Holden. She was a much bigger TV star than people remember and was a great sidekick in the movies. Dorothy K, Miss Arlene, and Bennett Cerf were all good, but they were helped somewhat by a column that appeared every week in Variety in those days that reported on West Coast celebs flying east and vica versa. I'm sure they all knew who was in town from Hollywood that week. Still, they are good!

  • Terrific actress and comedienne. Too tall for romantic roles, she was one of the best sidekicks in the business.

  • The applause was tepid considering the overwhelming talent and beauty of this comedienne. She could dish out a line with more p'zazz than almost anyone and her lines were dripping with good-humoured sarcasm. What a joy.

  • Very underrated actress. Not known as a glamour girl but also very beautiful. Class act.

  • Dick, thank you for posting this She was classy and very funny.

  • First on radio, then on TV she was "Our Miss Brooks" - English Teacher. Her character's name was from her real husband's name -- Books West who played the Science Teacher on the series (Mr. Boynton). Gale Gordon played the principle of the school... It was an absolutely wonderful program

  • Brooks West didn't play Mr. Boynton. Jeff Chandler and Robert Rockwell played him. And as far as i know "Miss Brooks" was created before she even met Brooks, so i don't think the character was named after him.

  • I've met many celebrities in my career as a writer. So I was used to being around them. But I really was in awe of Eve Arden when I met her on the set of "Alice", a series I was a writer. She told me how in the film "Stage Door" when another actress would decline to say a humorous line, she volunteered to take that line. She told me she was fortunate to be able to have had many acting jobs, and her favorite was of course "Our Miss Brooks". ...Rowby

  • eve arden always added so much talent to everything

  • I,ve played more supporting roles than Eve Arden, is one of my favorite lines when I come in second on anything. (EVERYTHING!!!!)

  • Richard Crenna was Walter Denton on Our Miss Brooks.

  • I've watched this clip about 20 times now and still LOVE it! Eve Arden was amazing in everything she did.

  • Eve Arden was the best, a class act, and that voice is certainly unmistakable. If you haven't seen her as Joan Crawford's wisecracking pal in Mildred Pierce, run out and rent or download it immediately. Between the Mothers in Law and Grease, she did commercials for Playtex. Two of my favorites (Ms. Arden and WML?) together ... what a treat!

  • I love Mildred Pierce! What a film!

  • how the hell did Dorothy guess her?

  • I ask the EXACT same question after seeing every one of these 'mystery celebrity' clips. The people on this panel are just d__n good at this game.

  • Often they recognize the voice but there was no voice in this case. Dorothy did very good here.

  • There were only so many channels at the time and only a couple were filmed out of LA at the time. Eve Arden was acting in Our Miss Brooks during that period in which she starred in it and she was a blonde and it was a sitcom rather than many of the variety shows at the time so there was very little to choose from and they asked if she was in pictures anymore so that ruled out a bunch of stars and she did theater which narrowed it down more and they kept tabs of who was in New York

  • Dorothy was the only one who actually tried to play the game. The others kept it going for the laughs, even if they knew who it was.

  • Bennett mentioned "Private Secretary", so he was thinking of Ann Sothern, who appears twice here in WML clips.

  • The Mothers-in-Law thats right with Kaye Ballard. That show had great opening music

  • You are right..Eve Arden was the principal in 'Grease'...classy lady

  • "If you can't be an athlete be an athletic supporter." :) (I think)

  • A rare talent and somewhat unorthodox legend: A character actress in films, a leading lady on television, but you'd know her immediately with the utterance of a single syllable; one of the most recognizable voices on TV and film. Essentially left her career to be a mother four times over, then bewitched a second generation of fans with things like "Grease" and "The Mothers-In-Law." Thank you so much.

  • Since I've only seen Eve Arden in films and on OUR MISS BROOKS it was fun to see her "in real life" on WML. Thanks!

  • She seems really nice

  • What is that horn thingy and how does she make it change sounds? Anyone?

  • Just a horn from a gadget shop at the time. One for yes, two for no. If she pressed down on it holding downn longer the sound was longer. That's pretty much all there is to it!

  • Thank you for answering me. But what I meant was how she makes it sound like her voice. She is really good at it. LOVE it

  • Yeah - she is great! My dear friend John just LOVES her in Anatomy of a Murder. If I bring her name up he goes right in to telling me how great she was in that movie. (I think it is kinda sweet -even tho I've heard him talk about her in that part like a million times!!) He loves her I guess - tee hee.

  • Eve Arden is one of the greatest character actresses EVER!!!

  • no way shut up was she the principle in grease or wrong woman? lovesssssssss it

  • "must be Lena Horne" -- hee hee hee

  • cause she has this duck sounding horn with her... LOL

  • Arden is delightful

  • Thanx for posting this classic sequence with a great actress. Some celebrities, Mark Goodson once said, could not disguise their voices and used other means. Arden's voice was pretty unmistakable. Whatever that gizmo is, it makes very funny yes and nos.

  • I love this show. Thanks for uploading it.
