Well being that she is from Taiwan, I'll assume it's Mandarin which in general is not an attractive language, at least from a foreign perspective. I have seen plenty of performers who manage to suppress their accent when appropriate, such as singing a song in a different language. They get props for that and in this situation, she does not. The truth is for me, her accent just took away from performance.

It's not easy to "suppress" an accent. She'd have to pronounce like an English speaker and maybe her language just doesn't contain those sounds, much like how Japanese speakers would have trouble with l and r. Unless she learned English at a young age with good English input, I don't see how the accent can be hidden. It's even harder to hide with a slower song, cuz you have to pronounce every word.

I know it's not easy to suppress one, but I wish she'd put more effort into it. Actors are often quite capable of doing this (for example Hugh Laurie, who plays House.. he normally has a thick British accent).

I didn't expect her to sing without an accent altogether, but I didn't expect her to have one that was so distracting to the performance.
