1) I've listened to this album since I was an infant, and I can say that this is a demo. Elton's inflection is slightly off in certain parts from his version on the album. -- 2) I think it *is* Elton on the keyboard, or else JNH is doing a great impression of him. -- 3) Kitty kitty kitty.... -- 4) I originally thought it was about insanity too! But yes, "Feed Me" is about addiction, probably Elton's, maybe just heroin. 5) Bernie and Elton are songwriting legends. : )
I've always found this song powerful and haunting. When it came out in 1975 I naively interpreted it as a lonely crazy person sent away to a sanitarium begging to be brought home and be fed with love. In the following years I caught on it was about drug addiction, probably heroin withdrawal (my arms are so hungry). On the full track the female backing vocals suggest the soothing siren calling the addict back to the drug as he suffers through withdrawals only wanting to return to the familiar.
I must have listened to this song a million times when I was a teenager, and never paid a bit of attention to the lyrics. Wow. Thanks for putting this out there.
Not the best song but very interesting to hear a demo with references to drug induced paranoia from the sessions for what became his "1st cocaine album". Knowing what happened in the years afterwards gives it an eerie foreboding feeling.
yes im glad elton in good shape with all that dang cocaine i like this sang for some reason hear the studio version if you can find it it more cheery more instruments this demo sounds good and creepy lol :O

The electric piano does not sound like Elton John playing. Is it James Newton Howard?
vestaliotis 1 year ago
@vestaliotis Yes, it is James Newton Howard playing the e-piano, it says so in the liner notes to Rock of the Westies.
