I was a little thrown off by Idina Menzel's portrayal having seen Rachel Tucker, the current Elphaba, so many times...but it's very interesting. Both takes work, of course. But Idina is more optimistic while Rachel Tucker is so very intense.
Our show choir a group older than us did this song and we only saw them preform it during rehersals so I thought the words were " Watch your day in the Emerald City " they also did " The merry odd land of Oz" From "the wonderful wizard of Oz" and " He's the Wiz"
@sassysama17 Me too! I was sure that I knew him but I couldn't remember! Then I search and search in Google and I found his name is Adam Garcia! And I've seen him before cause he is Stu Wolf in Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen! Sorry for my english..I'm Latin american...
I just saw the Australian cast on the weekend in Perth and it was amazing! I don't think any other show will ever compare to it. I think it sounds better if they all have the same accent, the Australian cast all put on American accents. It just keeps it flowing if whoever is playing Galinda here put on the same accent as Idina because the change between accents is just annoying. AND NO I'm not being racist, I'm just saying that it would keep a flow. After all in the movie Glinda was American.
@boffinme80 It's hard to tell, because no one actually speaks like that. But it sounds American with lots of articulation, so every letter is pronounced very well. She had a very bubbly voice also, with a lot of character in it so it masks an accent. I just think that keeping the same accent throughout the performance is a lot nicer, that's all.
Nothing beats actually being there in person. I went to watch the one in Australia with the Australian cast in the city that I live in. They were amazing.
It's interesting linguistically that the English version of this song is much more clipped, the language is more percussive and properly enunciated instead of the American version of this song, where the words blend together a lot more... Don't prefer one over the other, but its interesting and really reflecting on the cultures :D
someone didn't balance the microphones properly so it really doesn't sound as good as it could. i went and saw the Australian production and to be honest it was quite a bit better.
The leads in this rendition are interesting, they seem more like the characters in the movie. As in, well. Elfaba looks and sounds a lot more like the wicked witch if the west, and Glinda looks more like the good witch, the roundish face, I think.
We're doing this for choir and in one of our rehearsals our animateur's voice was going, so she said 'the wizard ... will be loud'! It was fricking hilarious, but I guess you probably had to be there to appreciate it
no offense but i think the american version of one short day is alot better that the london version but its an amazing play and theyre both amazing performances
I have the sheet music for Wicked, Avenue Q, Children of Eden, Phantom of the Opera, Next to Normal, Shrek the Musical, Spring Awakening, The Little Mermaid (Broadway), Thoroughly Modern Millie, and more. If you ever need/want it, just shoot me a message :)
Why do people always be rude about the English Glinda's just because of the accents. I think that is really rude and out of order. Except these girls are brilliant and I love this. Well Done
@40delboy40 They're really talking about Helen Dallimore, who I don't like either. But anyone else talking about the English accents is extremely immature and indeed very rude. People who complain are just retarded spoilt brats who want everything their way. So what if they don't sound the same?? I love Wicked but I HATE extremist fans.
They;re the ones who pick on the accent and make a huge deal out of it when it's really the smallest thing to worry about.
I think when I went I saw her as Elphaba. She was fantastic, especially in the Popular scene. Every actress does something different with that scene, and hers was one of my favourite. :D
@MrMrchopper actually they didn't purposefully bring idina menzel over just to be in it. she was part of the original west end cast in 2006 she wouldn't be in this performance if someone else got the part.
No, Elleskellybob is right about Kristin and Idina. They sound like perfection together. But I say this Glinda is really good and we need to keep open to the talents of all the actors.
Until just about 3 weeks ago I thought that Idina would be the one and only Elphaba. But now I have to correct me and reccomend Willemijn Verkaik to all of you. She's the best Elphaba I've ever seen and will ever see.
Okay, it's not like I'm a Kristin-ist, some of my favourite Galindas are Megan Hilty, Katie Rose Clarke, and Annaleigh Ashford. But this girl kind of gets on my nerves, I feel like she's overdoing it.
I went to see Wicked in London todayy and the current cast was absolutely amazingg! I think that each actress brings something new and different to the character they play, so I can't really judge (: Besides, I think they are all amazingly good at singing and better then I could ever do XD Bayy x
@naughtylilkt1 I missed that, sorry. And after viewing this more I can honestly say that it's really grown on me. I like this pairing of accents more than I thought I would.
@japanesedawn That was your fault for being so rude in the first place, bitch. You think no one would react after seeing your comment? You just got me as well.
My choir is singing this song in a concert. In fact, I'm in the car with my iPhone on the way to the school! Can't wait! This is everyones favorite song! (other songs are pets call the whole thing off and why we sing) I kno. Sux right! Only 3 songs! But the band is playing 2. I'm gonna stop this comment b4 it gets 2 long. Wait... 2 late. =/
Either way..It takes talent to play Elphaba or Glinda..Anybody, who plays either role has Thier own talents..all of them are Wonderful.. even though, my heart will forever think of Kristin and Idina whenever I think of Wicked :3..lol..Those things @ 2:56 Still scare me thoughXD
I find it odd that Idina Menzel has an American accent while no one does.
Also, this galinda is obviously "a english ditz" and the american galindas are the "american dumb blond". It's partially because of the accent though. Obviously this show has evolved some since it opened in London. Their voices don't quite blend in this version but other galindas and elphabas are just good as the OBC.

I'm English as well and I do not agree with you at all that we always over emphasise our words. Americans don't always say the "t" so it sounds like "ci-ee" .
The newer casts in Wicked London don't sound like this anymore. They just sing it normally.
Love this song, lol. So cheerful and upbeat, but if you've read the book it makes you a little nervous because you know what happens after it. Notfair so many people are forced to go their seperate ways when their dreams take them in different directions or someone like the wizard and Madame Morrible backstabs somebody.
@palmtree5678 I know! It's kind of sad that it happens, especially to Elphie. I mean, she's hated all her life and her one chance isn't the one she stands for.
Also, after reading the book, I saw the musical and was looking at the stage kind of happy-and-sad. You kind of think, "Hey, Elphie, enjoy this moment..."
Well, anyways... splendid song, and you can't deny that WICKED IS SWANKIFIED! ^.^
I like this cast a LOT! But... Glinda... really now? I'm not going to compare her to anyone. Not Kristin, Megan, or Annaleigh, or any other Glinda, because these women don't need to have their careers brought down by this woman right here.
stop comparing every glinda to kristin. shes too old to play that part forever. someone has to take over. youre nothing but haters who cant sing better than this girl
@z858978 i agree on the haters part but do you ever really get TOO OLD? i think even today she would pro-try that role the same way she did 7 or so years ago. let chenoweth live on forever!!!
SHUT UP!!!! Do you realise how fucking annoying you are?!!
Kristin IS indeed much better and my second favourite Glinda (Lucy Scherer is my favourite Glinda and Willemijn my favourite Elphaba) I love Idina and I don't like Helen either but do you really think it's neccessary to hate an ENTIRE British cast just because they're not American and how they pronounce their T's?? Huh! Americans say "ciDee" city is spelt with a "t" you retard!
Every production is different and I hope you respect other Glindas and Elphabas as much as Idina and Kristin!!
If you're a die-hard fan who doesn't like to take credit for any other actresses OR a British production then you can shut your fucking ugly big gob and piss off!!!!
Thanks, in school we are doing the song 'One Short Day' and this is the exact clip we are going to use for our Singing and Dancing, and this helped me :D
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
halfway through this, idina must have been like, "who the hell is this girl not kristin who's so bad at this song?!?!?!?" seriously, I didn't like this girl at ALL!! thank goodness they brought in dianne pilkington instead...

I like this cast a LOT! But... Glinda... really now? I'm not going to compare her to anyone. Not Kristin, Megan, or Annaleigh, or any other Glinda, because these women don't need to have their careers brought down by this woman right here.

Huh! Americans say "ciDee" city is spelt with a "t" you retard!
boffinme80 2 years ago 4
@japanesedawn
Every production is different and I hope you respect other Glindas and Elphabas as much as Idina and Kristin!!
If you're a die-hard fan who doesn't like to take credit for any other actresses OR a British production then you can shut your fucking ugly big gob and piss off!!!!
Stop being so fucking judgemental!!

halfway through this, idina must have been like, "who the hell is this girl not kristin who's so bad at this song?!?!?!?" seriously, I didn't like this girl at ALL!! thank goodness they brought in dianne pilkington instead...
