It ~could~ but it'd be kind of hard to replicate the exact song. Freezepop uses a keytar. Or a keyboard guitar. So, while they can run their hand up and down the keys to play notes on a single string, it'd be a hell of a lot harder to pull off that precision on a real guitar.

Actually gir98, all the bonus songs were masters, and in gh2 the Jane's Addiction and Primus songs were real. About half the songs in GH3 were too. The newer games are all masters though, not just vocals. Getting masters are either legal issues, or being able to find the damn tapes. It wouldn't make sense if they had just the vocals, 'cuz they sign over the rights to the whole songs, not just the vox, and there's never been a situation where all the masters were lost except the vocals.

the beatles had to remaster everything because there were only 2 tracks, the music and vox

Yeah, bit the guy ahead of me said that they'd cover parts of songs and just get the vocal tapes. Plus the remastering of the Beatles songs aren't perfect, it's just doing some basic audio editing and splitting the two tracks into four, which are only vaguely different from the originals for the sake of the gameplay.
