heres an Idea, why dont you still use hooks but just turn them upside-down, keep the new rim-mechanism but make the side plates into concave disks (like a viking battle-shield) that the hooks fit into. That way you eliminate the threaded float device (thats perishable) and you will have invented a beast.Youre probably thinking that the battle shields will have a center hole that will hurt the drums sound, but not if the end of the hook is a ball rather than an actual hook. think about it.
i almost considered it until I read the comments.....my only question was how does this system stand the test of time being that the hooks were simpler and sturdier. now there is a more complex little arrangement with the self aligning float plates.
Slingerland used Tympani cast metal lug plate & Tympani key head tuning ( poor ) Gon Bops version used their top tuned timbale hardware on a conga ( poor ) Lp fails due to changing the standard tuning of 1/2 " hex head. They have other issues to correct before they re invent a mediocre tuning system. Why did they use crude L brakets & heavy tuning system of their crude timbale shells , They are 40 years late making top tuned timbales as well, & only because Pearl tried it in a lame design.
Slingerland & Gon Bop already did this. Lp has done a variation of these previous attempts but missed an opportunity to do a more comprehensive design that can still use a regular 1/2 " hex head. I replaced Slingerlands version that used a tympani key rod, to a 1/2" hex head bolt. Lp should have kept the standard conga 1/2 " hex head tuning bolt ! Again ~ hype over substance. The Side plates now look like truck parts. Rushing design work ?BUT top tuned is a logical approach. Old style is LAME !
Hey it sound like a great idea, but this is not a regular drum.! Congas take a good beating ( no pun intended) and they are tuned often. The lugs on my drums get striped and warped all of the time. Will this ones do the same?
With that handy wrench you can double as a stage hand. Now you not only have to worry about making noise tuning the drum but keeping the wench quiet. Why don't I share their enthusiasm? 2 months ago

It's a concept previously done by Gon Bops and Slingerland years ago. It didn't take off then likely because there's next to zero need for this - ask any conguero. They're trying to twist things to make it seem otherwise, but c'mon! This is just marketing spin.
This is far from being a new idea it was done by slingerland 40 years ago. I don't like it try mounting your own heads with this system. The other draw back is that the lugs are thinner I see it as being much weaker and easy to strip.
heres another idea. \/\/\/\/\/\/ <--"zig zag"
i have certificate level 3 in engineering, make me an offer and I'll make you rich.

secondly: i dont think they look as good.

This is nothing new it's been done before .....I had drums with top tuning from Japan back in 1971

Great job Ray! L.P. Is the real deal..
(IMHO)
I believe this new L.P. tuning system will be much better than any other top tuning system ever made in the past...
Trust the LEADER!!!

This was done before on Slingerland conga drums 25 years ago...so the only thing thats new is the design of the tuning lugs..."JC" Johnny Conga
