At least its Dan Abnett working on the movie. From what ive read and heard from people in the warhammer community Dan seems to be the most popular writer, as well as the best. Thats just my opinion, as well as what ive heard.
The fact is, Dan Abnett was probably the best choice to go with in writing the screenplay. I can't wait. I'm abasing myself before the corpse-g... I mean the beloved Emperor, praying this turns out to be as wonderful as it should be.

I'm not so sure it HAD to be the Ultramarines but I do agree. Space Marines ARE the iconic core of 40K. It may aggravate some people to hear it but they're absolutely the one thing that any revision of the 40K universe that would have to remain constant to still be recognized.
In fairness, i haven't seen the Ultramarines do jack, not to mention how pretenious their name is, not to mention you don't have Scout Sergeant Cyrus with you, for me its Blood Ravens. But each to their own, i guess.
they should just make a live action imperial guard movie, maybe Gaunts Ghosts based. The only CG worth worrying about would be space scenes or large warp beasts...and shit
Like Lord Abnett says, it is just the first film. The Ultramarines are a softener, meant to draw the fan-base in. Then after it is a success, they can begin working on the nitty-gritty parts of the 40k universe with succeeding films. Right now, it's all new ground and they are not sure yet how the fans will react.

@FallenAquila I partially agree, but mostly disagree. While I am more of a Guard/Inquisition fan and believe the SMs get too much spotlight (especially the Ultras), some authors have made very decent works of fiction using Space Marine characters. Dan Abnett himself has done so.
I don't understand the whole hate for the Ultrasmurfs, I mean are they the best? Well that depends on the objective and mission, but they certainly are bad ass, Look at their Chapter Master, look at Ventris, Invictus, Pesanius, Tigurius Cassius, all well detailed characters with a deep background story, so what's wrong with the Ultramarines? Sure they far overused but this is the FIRST EVER MOVIE, if this is a success then the next one might show another chapter.
What the story would be like if some deuche wrote the story: Some ultrafag went to a planet because no one lived there. So they get there and there are orks who want advanced technology to take over the universe! But the eldar show up cause it was theirs first. So Ultramarines fight them but CHaos comes from the ground and goes crazy so Eldar Ultra and Orks team up and beat them and a space marine falls in love with an Eldar warrior and they live hapily ever after...Thank god for Dan Abnett

Any movie made about 40k or warhammer is going to be centered around humans, at the end of the day 40k is all about the Imperium vs everyone else, thats what 1st edition was about and thats what the rest are all about however expanded they may have become.
@balnazzar My idea exactly. I was thinking of a trilogy of movies depicting the emporer living throughout ancient history playing the parts of key individuals like Alexander the great, Davinci, and showing how he did a second coming esque during the unification wars.
@balnazzar You got to build momentum for that kind of epic. Start small. Build up rave reviews. Create more demand. Then do the Horus Heresy with a fatass budget.
If they do this and screw it up, that's one thing. If they were attempting Horus Heresy and screwed it up, that'd be a WHOLE nother thing. Let them have their practice movie with the ultrasmurfs I say.
Chaos is pretty obvious as a first choice, next to orks and eldar.
Tau would be funny, or dark eldar! Necrons would be an good for an IG movie. Tyranids would be my LAST choice because I hate those swarmy little bastards.
Dan Abnett is writing it, thats a good sign, a sign that the plot will be deep. He has a deep understanding of the Warhammer lore and uses Warhammer 40k as a vehicle for a good story, not Warhammer 40k itself for the story. He is not a political correct writer, which will give the story enough grim and dark moments and wont be the typical stereotypic Hollywood BS. hes at his peak and is writing really impressive stuff. "Legion" was one of the best sci fi--fantasy tales i have every read!
would love a director with the vision of peter jackson and guillermo del torro to tackle this movie,chances are it will be some asshole who knows shag all about the 40k universe and in turn will end up destroying it,its very rare that hollywood gets anything like this right.would prefer if they made a couple of movies on the horus heresy instead.

Of course they picked ultramarines for the first movie, it's the most popular chapter of the most popular wh40k faction. and it doesn't really matter really... if the first movie is any kind of success, they can do different factions in subsequent movies.

Purely about Ultramarines is a fail... They are too goody goody and generic. What would REALLY make it good is if maybe it started with Ultra and one of them gets selected for Death Watch. That would be rather cool :)
People would be disappointed no matter which Chapter is portrayed, but it's hillarious how a few people rabidly dislike the Ultramarines. They're one of the most developed and celebrated Chapters in the lore and are one of the few original Chapters that aren't a gang of unsympathetic psychos. They are trying to make an *interesting* story, not just a killfest that (some) fans will love and everyone else, general public included, will be dissapointed or appauled by.
Ultramarines are the ultimate space marines,Jes Goodwin who made space marines and Mat Ward who made the codex said this themselves,every space marine chapter inspires to be an Ultramarine

@FallenAquila I partially agree, but mostly disagree. While I am more of a Guard/Inquisition fan and believe the SMs get too much spotlight (especially the Ultras), some authors have made very decent works of fiction using Space Marine characters. Dan Abnett himself has done so.

I don't understand the whole hate for the Ultrasmurfs, I mean are they the best? Well that depends on the objective and mission, but they certainly are bad ass, Look at their Chapter Master, look at Ventris, Invictus, Pesanius, Tigurius Cassius, all well detailed characters with a deep background story, so what's wrong with the Ultramarines? Sure they far overused but this is the FIRST EVER MOVIE, if this is a success then the next one might show another chapter.

What the story would be like if some deuche wrote the story: Some ultrafag went to a planet because no one lived there. So they get there and there are orks who want advanced technology to take over the universe! But the eldar show up cause it was theirs first. So Ultramarines fight them but CHaos comes from the ground and goes crazy so Eldar Ultra and Orks team up and beat them and a space marine falls in love with an Eldar warrior and they live hapily ever after...Thank god for Dan Abnett

The oldest marines ever, (who is still not in a dread or on a tomb throne) they have never lost a battle, have a captian with more honors then the rest of the chapters combines, the best sniper EVAR! have several marines who took on 1000's of orcs individually, have the best public speaker ever, work the book on warfare

Despite still being humanish, they have no troubles or doubt or fear to over come, completely throwing out the basis of natural human behavior. No fight or flight, just fight, or fight some more? Most GW players hate smurfs, I think the only good chapter was the space wolves, but that was before GW changed them from the equivalent of space vikings to furries.

I think a Space Hulk movie should have been first. It would be easy to write and the cost of large open battle scenes could have been kept to a minimum. Then once it took off do other 40k movies. JMO

Any movie made about 40k or warhammer is going to be centered around humans, at the end of the day 40k is all about the Imperium vs everyone else, thats what 1st edition was about and thats what the rest are all about however expanded they may have become.

@balnazzar My idea exactly. I was thinking of a trilogy of movies depicting the emporer living throughout ancient history playing the parts of key individuals like Alexander the great, Davinci, and showing how he did a second coming esque during the unification wars.

@balnazzar You got to build momentum for that kind of epic. Start small. Build up rave reviews. Create more demand. Then do the Horus Heresy with a fatass budget.
If they do this and screw it up, that's one thing. If they were attempting Horus Heresy and screwed it up, that'd be a WHOLE nother thing. Let them have their practice movie with the ultrasmurfs I say.

Tau would be funny, or dark eldar! Necrons would be an good for an IG movie. Tyranids would be my LAST choice because I hate those swarmy little bastards.

Dan Abnett is writing it, thats a good sign, a sign that the plot will be deep. He has a deep understanding of the Warhammer lore and uses Warhammer 40k as a vehicle for a good story, not Warhammer 40k itself for the story. He is not a political correct writer, which will give the story enough grim and dark moments and wont be the typical stereotypic Hollywood BS. hes at his peak and is writing really impressive stuff. "Legion" was one of the best sci fi--fantasy tales i have every read!

i cant wait till this is brought to the USA. im hoping that some day more movies will be made like this, and i would love to see how each of the characters acts. i can see the main characters being tactical marines, not specialists.

Of course they picked ultramarines for the first movie, it's the most popular chapter of the most popular wh40k faction. and it doesn't really matter really... if the first movie is any kind of success, they can do different factions in subsequent movies.
Hell I'd enjoy a Titanicus or IG movie myself, but I'm content with what I get :P

People would be disappointed no matter which Chapter is portrayed, but it's hillarious how a few people rabidly dislike the Ultramarines. They're one of the most developed and celebrated Chapters in the lore and are one of the few original Chapters that aren't a gang of unsympathetic psychos. They are trying to make an *interesting* story, not just a killfest that (some) fans will love and everyone else, general public included, will be dissapointed or appauled by.
