Paula might have been a little crazy back then (not to me, really, but to other people I can see why I guess), but you have to love her because of how much she actually sees/invests herself in what these contestants do.  She didn't care about the jacket or (non existent) pompousness; she saw how much the song meant to David and how he wanted to portray it. She really, really cares, and I think that's so rare in showbusiness. And about David: LOVE this song. Great choice. :)

Even his worst performance was good. He flubbed up a little in the beginning, but he stil delivered an emotional and inspirational song in the end. The studio version was outstanding.

Ditto. Studio is powerful. This is a hard song to sing live with the swing in the notes. I still give props for David for picking a song that meant something personal to him. I loved MJ but he picked an iconic rock song- Dream on and didn't put a new spin on it. Loved Carly, but she had a strange pick with the Queen song and looked angry the whole time she sang it. And Syesha sang an Idol coronation song and never connected with it.

I'd think saying this is one of David Cook's best is pretty insulting to him, because EVERY other performance he's done was a million times better than this hot mess.

The beginning was awful, the chorus was odd because he way underpowered the back ups, then overpowered them in the second part, but he ended it pretty well. Easily his worst performance. Not to say he isn't totally awesome.
