I was surprised by her looks too. I'm sure prostitution gave her a thrill and she liked being desired by so many men. Besides the money, she was getting something from it.
Plain? Well, I think she's attractive enough despite her skin problems. Even if she doesn't have any "outstanding" facial features, she is still generally like I said before. She looks like a woman.
@elianns here in Australia you can arrange it one on one but you need to be registered under the government (haha, speaking as a former sex worker myself)
You're failing to take into account the fact that groups of people who want to do things others don't want them to will still do them. You can plug all the legal loopholes you want but prostitutes will still be in demand and someone will supply them with sex. The only thing that criminalization and going on about it being 'immoral and unethical' will do is cause prostitutes to be looked down upon and put at risk of being conflated with other ACTUALLY morally and ethically corrupt
@utubemaster047 Escorting is prostitution, the legalities on advertising are to appease the public eye - cant say it's a massage service as it is a sexual service and don't want people to get confused, everyone knows what an escort is and as long as they're licensed it's not illegal in Aus. Maybe it is where you're from but not here.

YouTubeMaster, it is NOT an illegal industry and they pay taxes just like everyone else. Amazing to see the person behind the show, can't wait to read her books!
Private prostitution is legal in England and most of western Europe, in fact. Street prostitution, pimping and brothels are what's often illegal. Remember the US is a de facto theocracy and has some of the least progressive laws in the First World. Go search "prostitution and the law" on Wiki.
@KandyZuessSlave "From a legal perspective, escort agencies claim that they are dispatching these individuals to provide a social or conversational service, since prostitution laws often forbid taking payment for sex or communicating for the purpose of arranging a contract for sexual services. Advertisements for escort agencies often carefully skirt the legal line, and avoid specifically offering prostitution or sexual services."
Your point being? If her experience was mostly enjoyable in that industry, then why should she pretend it wasn't? People like you refuse to abandon the myth that all prostitutes are toothless, trafficked, heroin-addicted, raped and beaten waifs worthy of pity. That may often be true of street prostitutes but it's a whole 'nuther animal when people are willing to pay hundreds of dollars for an hour of your time. Why would you say she's "glamorizing" anything? She's being honest.
@TitaniaTesseract "If her experience was mostly enjoyable in that industry, then why should she pretend it wasn't?" Because it is morally and ethically wrong and the government should work to eradicate all loopholes in prostitution. Your argument is flawed. It is logically equivalent to saying if a shoplifter's experience is mostly enjoyable, he/she should have the opportunity to glamorise his/her work on television. His/her response may be honest, but it still does not make it right.
"Because it is morally and ethically wrong" You're conflating morality with ethics. While prostitution runs counter to many people's moralities, there is nothing unethical about it. It is a service bartered for profit, with consent of two people capable of consenting (except in cases of human trafficking, but that's not what we're discussing here). Google "difference between ethics and morality".
A shoplifter, on the other hand, is wronging someone (shop, shopkeeper, etc.) A prostitute is not - except by some extremely hazy or convoluted definition of "wronging" that you will now proceed to invent.
@TitaniaTesseract Furthermore, regardless of how many hundreds of dollars she earns, it still doesn't change an act from wrong to right. "Why would you say she's "glamorizing" anything?" The definition of "glamorise" is to make something more attractive, she is hardly condemning prostitution in this interview. Leaving a loophole in the system only allows would-be criminals to exploit it, as was with the classification of mephedrone and off-shore taxation in the UK.
I think a lot of them are NOT necessarily gorgeous but they make the MEN feel gorgeous, think about it. Huge difference. Men do not always go for the best looking one in the room anyway. But who makes them feel at ease. Watch bar pickups closely or even who people pick to marry. In fact most models and actresses are alone into old age (like Jennifer Aniston.) Men are too intimidated by them.
@MsFannyAdams perhaps it's because Bell is the glamorous side of Brooke Magnanti. In the series Hannah herself is the typical girl next door, you wouldn't know her profession just by looking at her.
I love it how Billie seems reserved, neat and decent, at odds with the character she played, on the other hand i totally don't have any friendly feeling for Brooke, it's bizarre but she somewat irritates me.
i love how they had Billie interview Brooke because it just makes it all the more sincere when it comes from an actress reliving her stories... great choice and it's so nice she decided to do this interview.
This interview is teaching me that I have a lot in common with Brooke. She really is a remarkable woman. You can tell she knows what she's doing and knows how to get what she wants out of life. Her blog is fantastic, too.
It surprises me how plain Brooke is - perhaps because I'm so used to seeing Billie.... but her face is pretty scarred, and yeah - not what I was expecting.. Not a dig at all, I'm just really surprised
@MsFannyAdams I would not describe her as "plain". She is one of the most fascinating people I have ever seen interviewed. Beautiful, uncomplicated, assertive, intelligent, and self-confident. Next to those characteristics, her facial complexion is insignificant ... yes, even for the punters. I like the way Billy portrayed the part too, but Brooke has even more presence. To spend an hour in Brooke's company must be worth every penny.
@SirGalavant I think you're getting my opinion confused. I wasn't simply stating her physical appearance as plain - but she didn't seem to have much depth. I have seen/heard other people talk of her and other interviews and I guess you get so used to a produced image (such as SGOACD) that you negate to see past that and see the real person. That was my point, hence the surprise at her, to me, seeming so plain.

Prostitution is only illegal if you arrange it yourself, if a third party arranges the whole deal then it isn't consider a legal issue.
