I was there around July of 73 or 74 when the Tennessee Boweevil crashed and killed the young driver. I was the only one at the end of the track. His car went sideways back and forth several times before he lost it and the car disintegrated on a power pole. I ran to him as fire was near him. Emergency got there right away; along with his family. They saw how bad it was - and knew he was dead.
It's still there, some rich people who can afford it need to buy the property, get an ALLODIAL TITLE for the property this is the key, so it cant be shut down for noise pollution whether people like it or not, redo the track, and reopen it .
WE need to bring it back it now just sits there growing plats tress... i wish i had the money i would open another drag strip and call it US 30 Drag strip just a bit out side Valparaiso Indiana. The only reason this track closed was because idiots from Chicago started to migrate this way and homes went up and the noise complaints came in shutting down the track.
Remember the "000" club at 30? Man that time was the best for racing. The average guy could try different setups without tons of money. Not as many rules and regulations saying you could or could not run. I don't really remember a lot of people suffering horrific accidents with the caveman safety equipment and the weird setups that were tried. There were accidents and some fatal but probably no more than today.
Does anyone know where i can find video footage of 63/64? Hubbys dad use to race there in those years for a short time. He lost his dad at a very young age and was not born yet when his dad raced so i would like tlo surprise him with anything i can find of his dad and his car, the number was 333 if anyone out there remembers... any help would bve apprciated. Thanks.
Cool vid! I moved to the area in '86. Back then there was just a run down old strip we would race our bikes on at night trying not to get caught. I hear there is a small piece of blacktop still there in the weeds. Thanks for sharing this bit of history.
