I honestly want to understand what the hell is going on in this film, but I just can't appreciate it beyond a bizarre curiosity. I really don't get how it's genius in cinema. It's certainly original and intriguing though.
I used to feel the same about this movie. I actually didn't like it because I didn't 'get it'. Everything changed when I took a course in Soviet cinema at university. I had a great teacher who gave such beautiful insights in regards to this movie, that the next time I saw it, I cried :) I've been a huge fan ever since.
I know that doesn't help you much - I just wanted to share my story :)
