One thing that Shimano has over SRAM is that cable replacement is so much easier. It literally took me more than an hr to replace my rear derailleur cable because of the Double tap technology, and I still didn't get it right because I cut too much wire. Now I gotta do it again. I still love SRAM however!
That is a pretty cool video if you had put Primeshield on your hands before you start the work you can simply rinse your hands under running water leaving them spotlessly clean in seconds.

anyone know if you should add a little bike lubrication to the inside of the gear cable housing before installing it? i know you do with brake cable housings sometimes, so just curious.
My LBS recommended yearly cable renewal because these types of shifters tend to snap the cables inside the assembly, necessitating replacing the entire shifter - true? Thing is they were going to charge $200 to do it for me and replace brake pads! What a rip off. So I'll try doing it myself and you've been a help.
A question, why are you replacing the cable housings? Can't they be reused in the same way you're reusing the cable? A good idea to replace the ferrules I might add. Thanks again.
@OrphanSeasun - In this case my cable housings were in need of replacement as they were coming apart at the ends due to the rigors of repeated compression from shifting. They also tend to get a lot of grime and gummy build up on the insides so it's a good idea to replace the housings too.
Thanks for this video, I'm assembling my own bike from scratch with no former experience and I've found next to no information in manufacturer manuals on how to route cables and videos like this are a big help.
Great vid man...good to have step by step vids. Make great learing tools for people who want to save money by doing a bike repair themselves. you could kick the vid quality up a couple of notches clarity wise...was a bit blurry. Good job otherwise.
Thanks for this - very straightforward and helpful, but I would strongly recommend taking a break and figuring out what's going on with those kids!!! They sound like they're killing each other!!!
Is a cracked ferrule really going effect shifting that much? Mine have been cracked for awhile. And thanks for posting this vid, it makes the process pretty strait forward.
Thanks for making this video and sharing this clip. I was searching for tutorial on replacing a rear derailleur shift cable. Your video is exactly what I was looking for. Now I have just replaced my own shift cable and saved myself the cost of paying someone to do it. Enjoyed the process. Love your clear instructions. Many thanks again.
very useful- camera wasn't really all that bad- camera was good... I have some crap left over from my last cable inside the deurailler- any tips on trying to get that small little shrapnel stuff out- or like how do I get there?
with no disrispect, i suggest u get a camera stand or someone to film it, cuz i'd really like to know how to do this properly. nywy > fanks for the info....jst need better directing etc...

Do the ferrules just slide on and stay on or do they need crimping?

I have a Dura-Ace Shifter/Brake lever mechanism on my bike as well. How do you remove the plastic pieces that are sitting on top of the cable "port"?

I repair bikes everyday. You do NOT not special tools to replace cable!!! Also, no special housing or cable is needed!
mcbikesalesandrepair 2 years ago
Not not?
jtoots212 2 years ago
Ok. Sorry for the NOT not, but you dont need certain tools to replace a bike cable!

why does he keep calling the part a ferrel it's called a BARELL
fivolivodivo 3 years ago
FERRULE - correct spelling
The ferrule is the metal or plastic cap located on the end of the derailleur cable. The ferrule is inserted into the barrel adjuster.
Thanks to all who have posted constructive criticism...I'll work on better lighting and camera work for my next posts coming soon.
switchbaxr 3 years ago 4
hmmm...thats is sumthing i didn't know
before this video i have never heard anybody call it a ferrule i've just always called it an end cap thanks for the info though buddy
fivolivodivo 3 years ago
@fivolivodivo I call the metal endings you put on electrical wires ferrels, and
now I know what to ask for in the bike shop, ferrel or barrel !

Sheldon Brown said "SRAM sux?" Are you sure about that old chap?
I'm sure you of all people are correct, but would you mind awfully if I asked you to provide a link?
