hi! i want to record superior drummer on my computer.. i have an external audio card but it doesn't have any midi inputs.. is there a way i can load on superior drummer's samples into the electronic drum kit? thanks!
Wow I never knew how realistic superior drummer really was. If you hold on to the cymbal and hit it, it will mute the cymbal just like with a real drumkit. Fucking amazing.

Hey, i have the Alesis DM 10 Pro Kit and am having trouble mapping the choke on the crash. I removed the mapping for the crash and then tried to 'learn' it manually and for some reason every time i choke the crash i still get a crash sound? any tips?
Hey mikey, I have a question,I play guitar with Guitar Rig 4, but obviusly my latency is like one second jaja, I'm thinking of buying the M-AUDIO Firewire Solo, do you think its latency is zero or very near zero??? Please, i'll be waiting for your answer, thanks a lot!!!
What soundcard would you reccomend to have a midi interface like this? I don't want anything too expensive, I'm thinking about the M-Audio Fast Track Pro. Would this be a good one to buy? Also, how would you hook up the soundcard?
i have a drum simular to yours but 1 series under DTexpress3 and i can't use as a midi is there a away you can help me? do i have to use any software to use the midi? is so can you tell me or post a video showing how to use
for all you guys looking for no latency, check out any of line 6's toneports or guitarport. they have ZERO latency. I use pod farm and get some pretty damn good tone in my home studio
i just got here, looking to possibly buy one of these, can't you get zero latency with the m-audio audiophile card, which is only 125 dollars and been around for a few years now. zero latency sound card man. there is also asio4all a plugin i have used in cubase. where can i find prices for these RET kits?
I was a bit baffled when you spoke about "zero latency" in the other videos, since that is only possible when monitoring audio on the inputs, it's impossible when passing sound through your DAW (such as Cubase) and double so when also triggering a software instrument. 2ms is pretty damn good, though!
i have a tascam us-122 audio interface and i want to use the alesis i/o to trigger my drums, will the asio driver reduce the latency? im gonna connect the alesis i/o via usb i am not gonna use my interface it will only be for monotoring, can you tell me if this set up will work? im using addictive drums and sonar 8.5 studio
And I thought I'd seen everything with EZDrummer, but it's got a Badass Big Brother Called Superior Drummer. Thanks for the Vid's, they've really helped me with my studio work at home !!!
Not necessarily, but most computers just don't have powerful enough onboard sound cards to run it. You CAN get a free download (ASIO4ALL) to help out.
Other than that, I would definitely recommend getting an external card (with at least 2 outputs if you're going to play live).
Check out VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) for more info and to get some cool gear and software! It's my store, so feel free to let me know if you need anything!
Yes! Check my SD2.0 video (1.5 video). I think that's the one where I show how to create a choke. That way, you can assign a key for the choke note and use that to choke.
Soo mikey...which one is the most recommendable e-kit to buy? Toontrack EZdrummer Multi Layer Drum Sampler w/ 7000 sound files or this one, the Superior Drummer? (i have no idea how many sound files it has but wherever i go, it's much more expensive than EZdrummer...does it mean it's better than EZdrummer? or not?)
EZdrummer is good, but Superior Drummer 2.0 is like it's big brother! It gives you a lot of control and ability to use onboard effects. SD2.0 also let's you use the EZdrummer EZX packs inside of it.
I'd go for SD2.0 if you're looking for lots of control (a much bigger program, so you'll need a decent computer) or EZdrummer if you need something good, less expensive, and quick to use.
Please check out my site for more info and to buy!
Thanks a lot. I've been able to put more time into the videos. I really wish I could get a solid take of some of the really tight, and polished stuff, ya know?!
Hey man thanks for the post. I have a TD12 and SD2.0 just buying a Presonus Firebox. How do you connect the Alesis through the Midi interface on the presonus or seperately. And how do you find the live monitoring through the headphones rather than direct out.
hey mikey just wondering if i buy superior drummer 2.0 and just use a midi going to my laptop its a 160 gb harddrive and 2 gb ram, and vista, just wonderin if i'll get any latency?
yes u will, ive had some probs with it r u gonna use it to record or as a live module for recording u will need a firebox via firewire or the presonus usb 2.0 if your comp has fire wire go with the firebox. mine does not so im usb. but if it is for live using your headphone jack just download asio free 4 all and youll be in good shape now be prepaired to spend some money because sd2 doesnot have many drum sample sounds you will have to buy the expansions for it. the program is about quality
Mikey my sd2.0 is not functioning properly i have some latency issues i think it is because my computer doesnt have enough ram or a recent sound card do you think if i upgrade them that will fix my problem, cause the alesis multimix is the best usb interface i doubt that is my latency prob
Why do I need the firebox thingy? Cant I go from pads - to aliesis - to laptop? Doesnt that work?
Also, Ive got a laptop with Turion 64 x2 2.00ghz and 2GB ram
Is this enough to run software like this?
What is the best software to compare to a module like the TD12? Im not interested in the number of kits/sounds, just solid kits with excellent response?
Firebox is for the midi application and the host software . You need it so it can transfer the midi notes of from the trigger I/O into your host software. You do know the trigger i/o is not compatable with some of the roland drum pad. Also if your using a TD12 why not just use a usb midi cable from the Td-12 into your laptop heck of lot cheaper. That's what I do.
Thanks a lot. I've been dedicating more time to playing since this video.
The heads are Evans G2 Coated. RET Drums don't use Roland mesh. Just standard drum heads! And, no, they aren't as loud as acoustic drums with these heads on. The triggering technology dampens it!
Can you tell me how you trigger the bell sound on your ride? Is it a triple triggered cymbal you're using with an edge, bow and bell zone? If so, how does this work with the Alesis trigger io, it only has stereo inputs right?
Keep uploading your vids!! Havin much fun viewing them!!!
The ride is setup well enough to give the feel of a triple zone ride (bell, bow, edge). I turn the bell gain up, and have the bow sensitive enough to be able to get regular cymbal play out of it, and also harder hits with more 'wash' to it.
Does that make sense? It's not a triple zone, and you're right, the Trigger Io won't take 3 zones :-(
So what I understand is that you can set velocity levels on your trigger io? harder hits trigger the midi note for a bell and beneath that you get a normal bow ride??
I have the bell set as one of the two triggers (it has a trigger directly under the bell), then the bow is set very nicely so that I can play softer and get softer samples, then I can dig in and play hard to get the samples of a ride being played hard.
There are velocity curves within the Trigger io and the software, so you can get Great dynamics.
I think you CAN set velocity limits so a bell would play over 70, and bow under 70. That would be really neat.
The Smartrigger/Surge cymbals can be used with the hi-hat stand. It attaches to the actual pedal for the stand to make the closed to open sounds! So your actual hi-hat pedal IS the pedal!
why does my alesis usb pro kit sound like ass (as far as the response). i cant do rolls viably, and the velocity response is not very accurate. ive messed around endlessly with the trigger I/O settings. are the pads / tiggers that come with this kit shitty? or is it the software (ultrabeat through logic pro)? what can i do to get close to what you've got, which sounds awesome by the way. any advice would be greatly appreciated.
The Alesis USB Pro kit that you have COULD be playable, but it would take you some serious sit down time with the Trigger Io, and the proper software.
I'm not sure if you're still using the BFD1.5 Lite that comes with the kit, but if you are (THROW IT AWAY!!!) You'll need BFD2 or EZdrummer, or Superior Drummer 2.0.
They both have standalone programs.
I would download ASIO4ALL and use that as your sound card. You'll have a better response using that for audio driver.
hell yeah man. i really appreciate it. im trying to get my hands on superior drummer. i got the response a little better since, but the main issue is when i play at normal strength, it registers as a much higher velocity. in most of my recordings, almost all the notes end up at max velocity, even though im playing normally.
Maybe try using the Alesis Trigger Io Velocity Curves. I'm actually under contract not to tell what I use, but what I CAN say, is that I like a long or suppressed curve for my snare.
egh...i prefer the velocity OFF on my snare b/c you can get fast rolls or LG3...try both...you just need to edit the velocity curve for the lightest hit for the OFF setting...but during live play it doesn't really matter cuz you can't hear really light hits anyways...cymbals just be on LG1 or LG2 and hi hat def. LG2...Roland brains are def. better response but trigger io is bus-powered and so compact...Roland needs to come out with a better TMC module...more inputs and more parameter controls.
Thank you! I do lots of session work. I do it from my home, mostly. I do lots of rock, some country... and believe it or not... TONS of RAP and R&B style tracks!
It's lots of fun. But I couldn't do it as well without my VPT setup. Thanks for the message!
These are the RET Percussion electronic drums. They look and feel like a real drum set. AND, with the software, it sounds real, too. Have you ever used VPT Drum Software before?
dude that sounds awesome! i plan on using one of these alesis usb pros with logic pro. do you know if superior drummer is a compatible plugin with logic? oh, and kick ass drumming by the way.
I play thru a midi keyboard nd edit from there, are the keys layout the same as ezdrummer, gm mapped i believe as in C=kick, c#= sidestick, d snare, e rimshot, f# hi hat etc etc?
I'm sorry if this is offending you (or anybody else for that matter)... Since I'm kind of a newbie in Superior Drummer (I've been using EZ drummer a lot), can I use my Roland VDrumz to this, and how do i set it up in the program?
It really depends. This is the Stealth kit, which I added some hardware and software to. I was just picked up by a company that wanted to start selling VPT gear like this at the best prices. VirtualPercussionOutlet (.) com
The site will be up in a week, and you'll find the best prices for everything you'd need to replicate this.
What in your opinion is the more quite e-kick and e-heads? Do you use R.E.T. for personal reasons or you have a comparison with others, like HartDynamics or Roland, etc? What do you personally recommend for use with BDF and S2.0?
Depending on what you like, I would use the Evans G2 Coated heads for feel, but I would switch to mesh on the RET drums for a bit more silence. Mesh still feels pretty good on the RET's.
I use RET only because I feel they are Far better in construction, and also RET was built for software, unlike Roland or Hart Dynamics.
RET with ANY software pack! The real look, real feel, real sounds. That's Virtual Percussion Technology.
I would start off with a cheap acoustic kit to be honest. I would highly suggest once you get into playing more, and if you're going to be doing any recording... upgrade to maybe a Stealth kit by RET Percussion.
They are going to give you the best sound everytime!
Hey there mikey great video! I dont know anything about RET, but it looks great.
Im looking for a cheapish e-kit (£500 - £800) that will give me velocity changes so it can sound like this kit using that sort of program from toontracks, I dont care about any onboard preset sounds it has because its for recording purposes. I need it to be quite silent too, not like a triggered up drum kit. Please help me by telling me what you think is a good idea to get.
Honestly... it would be easy to get a cheap kit...
BUT, it won't work like an RET kit. No way, no how.
Save up your Euro's :-)
Get the RET Percussion Stealth kit... it's what I use, and it's the least expensive they offer (if you contact them, they will hook you up with the nearest dealer who will offer the best deal)
That's honestly your best bet. Go with the company who did it first and who does it best.
I do like the stealth, it looks amazing, and sounds it too. I'm just hoping theres some dealers in London. I would rather save my money up and get a stealth than a cheap kit. I could probably gig with this kit. Do you know if they export to London, or if there is anywhere in London they sell? I'd obviously realy prefer to play them before I buy.
So this kit is based on software drumming..?So does this kit have that Alesis Trigger IO with it,or do you have to order it by your self?Or does that kit have any "brains", OR Module or what is it called with it when you buy it..? And thank you :-)
how would i simulate hi hat drop lock? so i have both feet free to use a double kick while the hi hat is locked in the closed position? is this posible with superior drummer and the trigger io?
The FIRST thing that comes to mind, would be to simply MIDI map the Trigger IO for your normal setup.
THEN, I would make another kit (there are up to 20 kits you can make on the IO) that would be the same, except you'd have another kick drum on the hi hat pedal, and a closed hh sampled on the actualy hh cymbal.
You would push the Value up button to switch the two when you wanted.
You could always get a double kick pedal and assign the closed hi hat sample to a rim of a tom!
This video was well worth the wait. I know what you mean about probably not being your best stuff, but you did a heck of a job showing off the software with the RET's.
I want to nominate this video to be featured on Youtube!
Thanks a lot. I work really hard to put these videos together... all the video recording, drum playing, video editing, and all the cookies and guitar hero is hard to find time for ;-)
Mickey love your sound and playing of course! I really like the sensitivity of this kit, my snare wont pickup a acurate buzz roll, but yours did. I Think its in the sensor. Also a very sweet demonstation on dynamics. Love the cymbals, do they ever break?

You don't NEED one. But if you're a drummer, it makes it too easy to track your drum beats for music. Great way to practice, too!

thanks and no im not a drummer, how do you make it go all fast an stuff you know like fast double bass an like crazy fills
americkibosanac 2 years ago
Your drumming has improved a lot, great stuff
what heads do you use? are they Rolands?
ccc0mb0IIIIIIbReakeR 2 years ago
Thanks a lot. I've been dedicating more time to playing since this video.
The heads are Evans G2 Coated. RET Drums don't use Roland mesh. Just standard drum heads! And, no, they aren't as loud as acoustic drums with these heads on. The triggering technology dampens it!

What kind of cymbal triggers and drum triggers are you using?

Cymbals: Smartrigger
Drums: RET Percussion
This combination is SWEET!

Hey Mikey,
Can you tell me how you trigger the bell sound on your ride? Is it a triple triggered cymbal you're using with an edge, bow and bell zone? If so, how does this work with the Alesis trigger io, it only has stereo inputs right?
Keep uploading your vids!! Havin much fun viewing them!!!
Greetz,
Jasper
The Netherlands
chappiesss 2 years ago
Thanks, Jasper!
The ride is setup well enough to give the feel of a triple zone ride (bell, bow, edge). I turn the bell gain up, and have the bow sensitive enough to be able to get regular cymbal play out of it, and also harder hits with more 'wash' to it.
Does that make sense? It's not a triple zone, and you're right, the Trigger Io won't take 3 zones :-(
Thanks again!
-mikey
MikeyVPT 2 years ago
Thanks Mikey!
So what I understand is that you can set velocity levels on your trigger io? harder hits trigger the midi note for a bell and beneath that you get a normal bow ride??
Thanks man!
Jasper
chappiesss 2 years ago
I have the bell set as one of the two triggers (it has a trigger directly under the bell), then the bow is set very nicely so that I can play softer and get softer samples, then I can dig in and play hard to get the samples of a ride being played hard.
There are velocity curves within the Trigger io and the software, so you can get Great dynamics.
I think you CAN set velocity limits so a bell would play over 70, and bow under 70. That would be really neat.

on electric drums do you have to hit it directly in the center? because ive got acustic drums and i was thinking of getting some electric ones.
hazdx 2 years ago
Some edrums you have hit in the center, but the RET drums are sensitive enough for you to do a roll on the edge and it sounds great.
I would go to VirtualPercussionOutlet(.com) and see if you could maybe get some single drums to start.

how to sit up with my acustic drum sit
melodias26 3 years ago
Hey! The Surge hihat can be mounted on a common acoustic hihat stand? Can you close it against other cymbal o you need the electronic pedal with it?
PoLLasQuE 3 years ago
The Smartrigger/Surge cymbals can be used with the hi-hat stand. It attaches to the actual pedal for the stand to make the closed to open sounds! So your actual hi-hat pedal IS the pedal!

Thanks.

why does my alesis usb pro kit sound like ass (as far as the response). i cant do rolls viably, and the velocity response is not very accurate. ive messed around endlessly with the trigger I/O settings. are the pads / tiggers that come with this kit shitty? or is it the software (ultrabeat through logic pro)? what can i do to get close to what you've got, which sounds awesome by the way. any advice would be greatly appreciated.
flyagaricleech 3 years ago
The Alesis USB Pro kit that you have COULD be playable, but it would take you some serious sit down time with the Trigger Io, and the proper software.
I'm not sure if you're still using the BFD1.5 Lite that comes with the kit, but if you are (THROW IT AWAY!!!) You'll need BFD2 or EZdrummer, or Superior Drummer 2.0.
They both have standalone programs.
I would download ASIO4ALL and use that as your sound card. You'll have a better response using that for audio driver.
Does that help?
-mikey
MikeyVPT 3 years ago
hell yeah man. i really appreciate it. im trying to get my hands on superior drummer. i got the response a little better since, but the main issue is when i play at normal strength, it registers as a much higher velocity. in most of my recordings, almost all the notes end up at max velocity, even though im playing normally.
flyagaricleech 3 years ago
Maybe try using the Alesis Trigger Io Velocity Curves. I'm actually under contract not to tell what I use, but what I CAN say, is that I like a long or suppressed curve for my snare.
-mikey
MikeyVPT 3 years ago
egh...i prefer the velocity OFF on my snare b/c you can get fast rolls or LG3...try both...you just need to edit the velocity curve for the lightest hit for the OFF setting...but during live play it doesn't really matter cuz you can't hear really light hits anyways...cymbals just be on LG1 or LG2 and hi hat def. LG2...Roland brains are def. better response but trigger io is bus-powered and so compact...Roland needs to come out with a better TMC module...more inputs and more parameter controls.

All you need is a VPT Drum Set, and a VPT Package from the site. That will give you everything you need.
If you also need a hi-hat and bass drum pedal, you can buy those, too. That's all you need!
Thank you. Feel free to ask any questions you have!

i have a question?????
why if ur drum is out of tune????
7788821394 3 years ago
What drum are we talking about?
Inside the software, you can actually tune the drum samples!
BUT, if you're talking about the RET electronic drum, well... that won't make a difference, it would just feel different to you.
Does that answer your question?

Hey, I like the "hang" of your rhythms. Do you do session drumming? What kind of music?
Casar1973 3 years ago
Thank you! I do lots of session work. I do it from my home, mostly. I do lots of rock, some country... and believe it or not... TONS of RAP and R&B style tracks!
It's lots of fun. But I couldn't do it as well without my VPT setup. Thanks for the message!

MikeyVPT 3 years ago
does the electronic drums itself affects the overall triggering of the software or it is the drum module that makes it different from each other.
let say, alesis DM5 e drums paired with a Roland Td20 module, does it gonna give me the same sensitivity as the roland mesh drums?
and also is there a cheap RET set? below 1k?
tnx! -Tim

We believe that the drum set you use, the interface, and the software all play equal roles in your VPT software experience.

Hey! Love your instructional videos, Mikey!
I'm sorry if this is offending you (or anybody else for that matter)... Since I'm kind of a newbie in Superior Drummer (I've been using EZ drummer a lot), can I use my Roland VDrumz to this, and how do i set it up in the program?
Would very much appreciate a response =)
Thanks, from Sweden!
JohanHeart 3 years ago
Hahaha... it's not offensive, but I would highly recommend a switch to RET ;-)
You can use Vdrums, all you need is the Upgrade version of SD2, then you're all set. AND, if you have any EZX's, you can use those within SD2, also.
If you don't want to use your module, you can always sell it for the Alesis Trigger Io for much cheaper.
Does that help?

Hello there,
Nice videos, congratulations on your work!
What in your opinion is the more quite e-kick and e-heads? Do you use R.E.T. for personal reasons or you have a comparison with others, like HartDynamics or Roland, etc? What do you personally recommend for use with BDF and S2.0?
Panozk 3 years ago
Depending on what you like, I would use the Evans G2 Coated heads for feel, but I would switch to mesh on the RET drums for a bit more silence. Mesh still feels pretty good on the RET's.
I use RET only because I feel they are Far better in construction, and also RET was built for software, unlike Roland or Hart Dynamics.
RET with ANY software pack! The real look, real feel, real sounds. That's Virtual Percussion Technology.
Thank you for your comment!

Please help me by telling me what you think is a good idea to get.
thanks for the vid

Honestly... it would be easy to get a cheap kit...
Honest!

So this kit is based on software drumming..?So does this kit have that Alesis Trigger IO with it,or do you have to order it by your self?Or does that kit have any "brains", OR Module or what is it called with it when you buy it..? And thank you :-)
Jounizky 3 years ago
hey mikey,
how would i simulate hi hat drop lock? so i have both feet free to use a double kick while the hi hat is locked in the closed position? is this posible with superior drummer and the trigger io?
pistolpete198069 3 years ago
The FIRST thing that comes to mind, would be to simply MIDI map the Trigger IO for your normal setup.
THEN, I would make another kit (there are up to 20 kits you can make on the IO) that would be the same, except you'd have another kick drum on the hi hat pedal, and a closed hh sampled on the actualy hh cymbal.
You would push the Value up button to switch the two when you wanted.
You could always get a double kick pedal and assign the closed hi hat sample to a rim of a tom!
