It's the "happo no kamae", the 8 basic starting positions. (8 on each side: chudan, gedan, waki, hasso, jodan, seigan, sei gedan, kasumi). It's the second in a short series of kamae (posture) drills. Goho no kamae is the first; it omits the seigan, sei gedan, and kasumi, but is otherwise the same.
I'm afraid shadow dusk is right [though he might have put it more diplomatically]-the execution of the techniques is poor. I don't know this gent but I have my doubts that he is an instructor connected to Obata sensei's group.
Koryu masters of which arts? You aren't implying that they're all the same, are you? A basic kata like goho kamae can't be expected to 'flow' as gracefully as a more advanced one. I'm not defending anyone, here, but your original post was pretty shallow.

oh but crying out loud, don't try that 'you are actually the one who doesn't know what you talking' cheap debate tactic with me. you must be practising with this idiot and that is why you are defensive now cause you have a stake too. first of all, whether it is a basic or advanced move, there is no excuse for bad posture and stiffness. it's not about 'flow'! and your instructor IS fat. i would respect you more if you just admitted it.
oh yes, to add more reasons to why i said all this - your instructor has horrible footwork and stiff knees (never sinks and moves with his hips). he WALKS, doesn't use the ball of his feet and doesn't move from his centre at all. go and train some more before you dare to post such shinkendo nonsense. your founder's aikido is also suspect.
oh yes and i mean it. i am not joking and not trolling for the sake of trolling. he really sucks and i can back it up. all you need is to look at how koryu masters move. if you don't know what koryu is then it only proves that you are just as igorant as the person you are defending. i am dead serious. i have no problem with people doing their own thing, but for jeffrey tie to claim the status of 'instructor' is ridiculous. so singaporean. u want status but don't have the substance to back it up.

Is this the kata or the warm-up before the kata? Is the first kata a series of just the positions? Was there a cut there made at all. Thank you :-)

I'm with shadow dusk. I do a Koryu Kenjutsu instead of Shinkendo and they are generally have similar enough movement.
