Hey guys how high do you have to have the volume to actually hear the amp but not so high that it breaks up? I was guessing about 2-3 is that about right?
Very good review on this amp, and the various tones available. I have a '65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue, and it has transformed my playing. You really get to feel every note and chord, and it inspires you to play neater and cleaner,as every nuance is well defined. A outstanding amplifier, highly recommended to the small gig musician and serious hobbyist.
I love my SG and I used to use Marshall amps, but i recently stumbled upon something i've been missing for years: a fender guitar plugged into a fender tube amp! I always gravitated toward gibson/marshall because it is so easy to get a good tone and sound like a decent player. Gibson's play fast and you can "miss" notes with a marshall because of the distortion. But I have come to love Fender. You have to work the guitar and there is something about Fender grit that i love more than marshal
i got one of these amps yesterday at SamAsh and it sounds very nice with my Gretsch 5120. I CANNOT BELIEVE how warm the sound is. After 4 on the volume, the sound breaks nicely for some crunch. Definitely worth the money and the nicest amp I've ever owned! This one is a keeper for sure.
@MrSaurusman the vox has a "chimey" tone, but wont give you you the beefy fender sound. if thats not too much of a problem for you, the vox might be a better choice considering the lower price, and the fact that it has a master volume (low volume with higher gain.) however, for what i dod, i prefer the fender
ANYONE INTERESTED IN BUYING THIS AMP just a little note you might wanna know. the jensen speaker is really bright for this already bright amp. be ready to fork out at least 100 bucks for a new speaker (greenbacks worked great for me). then the sounds get balanced out and it becomes more versatile. still, its even great stock
@reallybored32 I have to agree but you can use the tone knobs to compensate, I myself ordered a weber 12f150 and put some nos rca's and mullards in for tubes. I also use a Dr.Z brakelite and it's perfect for taking some of the brightness off, 4 on the volume on this amp is pretty damn loud guys, espcially if your in a house. People will be telling you to turn down unless you live alone or with other musicians. My wife thinks it's loud on 2 and at night I have to agree.. Ocd and ts9 for dirt
@rimesification loud enough to keep up with a moderate drummer no problem. you might have to push it a bit more with a loud drummer, but rarely. it will do fine, but then you can always mic it
I was thinking about getting this but haven't been to any stores lately so if I could ask some questions: I already know the cleans are awesome, but can I put pedals in it and will they sound good ? If I wanted to play something heavier like Metallica would it be alright ? How about the for other stuff that's not too heavy such as The Pillows ?
@TheEternalLeader This amps so clean Im sure a well built OD pedal will sound nice to throw some more dirt on it without cranking, as for pillows, I think a Vox (ac15 or night train possibly) would nail The Pillows much better
@HandRpuffin Well, some diferences are Power: 85 watts for the twin to 22 watts for the deluxe. Speakers: 2x12 in the twin vs 1x12 in the deluxe. Weight: almost 70 pounds for the twin vs 40 for the deluxe. Tubes: Twin 6L6 (4) vs Deluxe 6V6 (2). The deluxe overdrives very sweet, the twin is know for not overdrive until you are at insane volumes ( I had to stay away like 30 ft away to tolerate the volume). Of course there are still more differences but I think the most important were discussed.
@HandRpuffin Deluxe has lower wattage and has 1 speaker as opposed to 2 on the Twin. Deluxe has 22w while Twin has 85w. The Deluxe when cranked has more overdrive than the Twin, but you get a slight crunch on the Twin when dimed. The Twin has been referred to as "one of the cleanest tube amps ever." Hope this helps
@HandRpuffin the twin reverb is much larger and has nothing but clean headroom for days. It will break up ever so slightly if cranked, but it's so fucking loud at the point it's almost ridiculous.
@ucceldibosco. I have a book by Wolff marshall that states Wes montgomery used this amp. I have a 58 reissue les Paul and it sounds fantastic. One critical mod: unsolder the bright cap on the vibrato channel and/or use the normal channel input 2. Good jazz tone!
@FrenchosaurusRex I think that's a Royer 121-very expensive, but it's nice that they go to the trouble of mic'ing up the amps in their demos (unlike most of the wankers you see using the mic on their video cameras).
@Shredsaplenty I recorded with one for the first time last summer. SUCH tone!!! LOL, I begged my producer to let me take it home, he's like "It's my amp, lol, it's not for sale!" :D
Hi Andy, would you say the deluxe reverb has better sound quality than the hot rod deluxe, or would you say they ar around the same, try to answer without saying, they are different
tone wise, is there really much difference between this and a twin? i know the twin's a ton louder, but is there much difference? also, how would either of them sound with some ehx el34's?
is there really any difference between this and a twin? i know the twin's a 2x12, and has a way higher wattage, but is there really much other difference?
@MegaFenderstrat Then you will need a Twin Reverb. The Deluxe won't have enough headroom and won't be loud enough for anything more than practices and small gigs without a mic.
Have you guys done a review of the fender 212r frontman amp? Id love to hear it to see what to get. Im stuck bettween This one the 212R and a Mustang IV combo anybody got any ideas?
@63UncleC From watching many, the majority of PGS demos of distortion and fuzz pedals done by andy are on this amp, he says so on most of them. Sometimes be on a 65 Amp Soho. 100 examples right there at least. Personally I have one and can tell you it responds beautifully to most quality fuzz and distortion boxes. It has quirks/the fender vibe, but the deluxe is the clean foundation of so many great/popular guitar sounds...heck it's pretty much the clean slate foundation of guitar tone...period.

hey i have the opritunity to buy one from 74, but one of the stock speakers is torn and was wondering what would be a could swap or if i could get away with some silicone on the back of the speaker, also if this is still a good buy for 150 bucks thanks, also how loud can this go before it breaks up?
I have one of these and the clean tone is unbelievable, but when i step on an overdrive or distortion pedal it sounds awful. im looking for a light crunch it just comes out unbeliveably trebly and buzzy. pedal suggestions?
@fuzzymuffPI also an Electro Harmonix English Muffin'...kinda pricey but runs on tubes and is dynamic tone goodness, heard its just like an amps preamp too.
Does is this amp have enough power to play with a band and still have good dynamics? I want something I can crank in small venues to get to the sweet spot but still back off to a clean with my volume knob.
@journeyquest1 this its got more watts so you can play clubs without micing it and its got another normal channel if you want to bypass the vibrato and reverb for a pure tone
@journeyquest1 I'd say the deluxe some more clean head room plus you have an extra channel for more tonal options. that's just my opinion I would go play both of them and buy according to your ear
Hi Andy, Do you think this amp would be a good base accompanied with a good echo and fuzz for emulating the early pink floyd sound. Or do you have any other recommendations for heads and amps that could acheive that sound? I have a Danelectro DC59 reissue as my guitar.
Andy! :) first thanks for the reviews. Was just wondering what are your thoughts between DRRi and the Fender Blues Deluxe? i'm upgrading and looking for a great clean sound and a tad on the dirty side for the overdrive
@FIRECRACKER392 I have a 335 and a deluxe reverb - and I'm so frustrated with the sound I cannot get that I am ready to ditch the whole mess and get a jazz guitar and amp - or go back to a Tele into a Blues Jr and settle for the single coil Fender sound
Great review! Helped me make my decision. I am currently selling my Egnater Rebel 30 because I can't live without Fender Cleans any longer. The Egnater has great cleans, but this video helped me decide that this is my next amp.
I haven't been able to A/B the DRRI and Egnater yet, but to my ears the DRRI is naturally more chimey and the Egnater is a little more generic sounding. How loud does the amp get before it starts to breakup?
I just watched the Vox AC series demo on Vox's website and it shows them connecting one channel's input to the other channels input to get a heavier distortion. They call it jumping channels. I assume you can do that with this amp too? Why don't you guys demo this feature on your videos? Warranty issues?
are there any minor changes you would recommend to have done on the drri? I purchased one and although I like it, the high end seems to get harsher and unpleasing as the volume increases. Specific tube changes or speaker replacements that you would recommend? I hear that changing the bias on to 24mA is helpful as well. Any feedback would be appreciated.
@iceman91291 - Our DRRi is stock, other than tubes. We have found that a tube swap can make a significant difference, though. We've been using matched sets from Tube Doctor with great success. Thanks!
@iceman91291 i think you need to turn the treble down as you increase the volume and vice versa..also modulation such as reverb and chorus decreases the highs.i dont know im guessing
@iceman91291 change the 5AR4 rectifier to a 5U4GB...or, even a 5Y3 ...with a pair of 6V6 the 5Y3 should be fine. you will get more slower rise time and more pronounced note decay and more touch sensitivuty. the 5AR4 is the wrong tube for a pair of 6v6 tubes...in a super reverb or twin reverb they are probably needed but not in this amp. Fender is even shipping the princeton reverb with 5AR4 rectifiers which makes no sense to me
@iceman91291 I use a Jensen Speaker. Way Way nicer.
also I love tracking bass with this amp. I use a Heil 40 mic and I can record the amp at a low volume and still get a great amp sound to mix with the DI signal.
@iceman91291 I took out a capacitator on the reverb channel, that was added (not in original 65) to make overdriven sounds 'nicer' on lower volumes. I felt it sounded like crap, shrill. We took it out and now it sounds as it should. I think you are right about the harshness and that is the culprit.
@iceman91291 a friend had a device like a pedal that he went into before the combo and it cut the guitars pickup output down a few points and it helps the highend harshness a lot
Nice demo Andy! I'm looking for a reverb but not sure which one to get, this one or the twin. Is this amp (deluxe reverb) good for medium size gigs also or is it only for practice at a house or studio?
@kaphillum Dude, learn to fine tune your OWN ears to LISTEN for that tone. WHy should anyone tell U which one suits YOUR taste?? :) Best amp is the one U try out with your own guitar within your own budget.
Nice review.. do you find the reverb channel a little bright ? I''m undecided between this amp and the Princeton reverb.. for the small extra price the DLR seems the way to go. Is the princeton more similar to the DLR normal channel or reverb channel in terms of tone ?
do you know anything like this that's in the neighborhood of less than say, $700? i'm aware of the Bugera V55, but i'm not 100% confident in it.
i want something with versatility. i have a strat, and i might be getting an Epi Firebird. I'm a big Black Keys fan, so i'd be trying to do everything Dan does.
Hey Andy. I'm in the market to replace my laney aor 50 with something thats got more soul. I narrowed my search to a DRRI or a new AC15cc1. I went to several GC's to try and AB and I can't find a GC with a working DRRI. I did play the vox and loved it but not playing the DRRI is stopping me from pulling the trigger on the deal. Can you offer any guidance? What are the main differences? If you were picking one which way would you go? Thanks!
@abn61024 - Great amps, just different flavors. You can expect the DRRi to have a little more clean headroom, and a somewhat flatter frequency response. The AC15 will be a little dirtier, with a more pronounced midrange and high-end chime. For DRRi examples, listen to any of our guitar demos. BTW, the Laney AOR 50 is a cool amp...used to have one back in the day. And remember, amplifiers are electronic devices. Electronic devices don't have souls. The soul part is up to you. Thanks!
How do these compare to the other Fender Reverbs (Super, Twin etc.) how much quieter is this one? I'm also thinking of perhaps buying a Fender Bassman. I'm looking for something that I can SOMEWHAT crank up a little in my room, and then also get good venue sound.
The DR has been a fav of mine for years - clean tones, takes my pedals like a pro, and isn't a back breaker to haul. BUT, I've been messing with Egnater Tweaker. It plays a fuller tube tone at lower volumes, cranks and thrashes with a couple toggle flips, and really sings with my Tube Screamer and old Boss PW-2. The speaker's a very fine Celestion G12H-30 - vintage tones w/ added bottom end that's very tight. No reverb, tho. But $420 less than a DR!! A different beast but a real tone monster.
I'm about to upgrade from a Frontman 212R to the Deluxe Reverb. Am I doing the right thing? Does the Deluxe Reverb have the same feedback issue as the Frontman 212R?
I finally got to play one. It sounds sweet. Pros are that it is easy to dial in tone, and has great reverb. Only con is not having a middle control. Sounded really tight but I bet a vintage one is a little more broken in. I didn't get to test out the tremolo (didn't work) so I don't have an opinion on that. I hope to try out a Twin Reverb to compare.
I can't beleive you had this amp on close to 10 and you are sitting right next to it. I put mine on 3 and my house shake and my drummer complaint that he can't hear himself. I hope you are using ear plugs ... Great demo!
Does everyone that does an amp review have to play that southern blues stuff? Is that the script? Come in with a blues lick? At least this guy sounds like he knows what he is talking about. Confident in the review and in the information. But, please, refrain from those finger picking blues licks....they drive me nuts!!!!
@ProGuitarShopDemos Is the tube-driven reverb real spring? Is it the same reverb they use in the Hot Rod DeVille cus in the description of the DeVille it says real Fender spring reverb.
@ProGuitarShopDemos Its a reissue of vintage amp ....Blues/soul/surf/pop is what was on the radio when that amp was originally introduced and for what it was primarily used. Of those genres, he played a lil blues, a lil surf and a lil soul ....the demoer did what he was SUPPOSED to do...the DR was around before Sabbath, before Devo, before Metallica, before Korn, before...etc ....probably before you (and it was DEFINITELY around before me ...im 26) ....
@THEFUNDAMENTALVIEW it IS a blues and country amp, at least used most for these genres. PGS generally knows what to play on what gear. I don't know if they have a demo of a Dual Rec or something, but if they do, the playing won't be 'southern blues stuff' ;)
You are watching a review of a Fender Deluxe Reverb. What the fuck are you complaining about? Grow the fuck up and go listen to the 5 million other videos on Youtube where 17 year olds "review" their latest amp with the same down-tuned chugging that has turned the metal genre into more of a joke rather than an aggressive musical style.
Gee whiz! Blues licks on a Fender amp review!?!?! That's just fucking stupid!
You may not like the finger-pickin', blues-type riffs, but the Deluxe RI was designed for that sort of thing, so why not show what it can do. I love that sort of playing anyway. But this amp also handles pedals VERY-well, as do most tube Fenders. My '97 Hot Rod Dlx sounds killer with my hand-wired dirt pedals, plus it stays pretty-quiet even with my fuzzes.

Andy! :) first thanks for the reviews. Was just wondering what are your thoughts between DRRi and the Fender Blues Deluxe? i'm upgrading and looking for a great clean sound and a tad on the dirty side for the overdrive

Nice video, but the only way you will get the most out of that amp is to put a Gibson 335 with it.... = perfection then :)
FIRECRACKER392 11 months ago
@FIRECRACKER392 I have a 335 and a deluxe reverb - and I'm so frustrated with the sound I cannot get that I am ready to ditch the whole mess and get a jazz guitar and amp - or go back to a Tele into a Blues Jr and settle for the single coil Fender sound

how does she take live/rehearsal ??? is is loud enough?
wrona003 11 months ago
Great review! Helped me make my decision. I am currently selling my Egnater Rebel 30 because I can't live without Fender Cleans any longer. The Egnater has great cleans, but this video helped me decide that this is my next amp.
I haven't been able to A/B the DRRI and Egnater yet, but to my ears the DRRI is naturally more chimey and the Egnater is a little more generic sounding. How loud does the amp get before it starts to breakup?

I really like the tone king imperial demo as well but damn that fender sounds good here.

PF1964 1 year ago
Hey Andy,
I just watched the Vox AC series demo on Vox's website and it shows them connecting one channel's input to the other channels input to get a heavier distortion. They call it jumping channels. I assume you can do that with this amp too? Why don't you guys demo this feature on your videos? Warranty issues?
Thanks for the demos. Keep them coming.

are there any minor changes you would recommend to have done on the drri? I purchased one and although I like it, the high end seems to get harsher and unpleasing as the volume increases. Specific tube changes or speaker replacements that you would recommend? I hear that changing the bias on to 24mA is helpful as well. Any feedback would be appreciated.
iceman91291 1 year ago 7
@iceman91291 - Our DRRi is stock, other than tubes. We have found that a tube swap can make a significant difference, though. We've been using matched sets from Tube Doctor with great success. Thanks!

@iceman91291 i think you need to turn the treble down as you increase the volume and vice versa..also modulation such as reverb and chorus decreases the highs.i dont know im guessing
2gadebros 11 months ago
@iceman91291 change the 5AR4 rectifier to a 5U4GB...or, even a 5Y3 ...with a pair of 6V6 the 5Y3 should be fine. you will get more slower rise time and more pronounced note decay and more touch sensitivuty. the 5AR4 is the wrong tube for a pair of 6v6 tubes...in a super reverb or twin reverb they are probably needed but not in this amp. Fender is even shipping the princeton reverb with 5AR4 rectifiers which makes no sense to me
solerso68 10 months ago
@iceman91291 I use a Jensen Speaker. Way Way nicer.
also I love tracking bass with this amp. I use a Heil 40 mic and I can record the amp at a low volume and still get a great amp sound to mix with the DI signal.
joebartone 9 months ago
@iceman91291 I took out a capacitator on the reverb channel, that was added (not in original 65) to make overdriven sounds 'nicer' on lower volumes. I felt it sounded like crap, shrill. We took it out and now it sounds as it should. I think you are right about the harshness and that is the culprit.
cloudmachine1 5 months ago
@iceman91291 a friend had a device like a pedal that he went into before the combo and it cut the guitars pickup output down a few points and it helps the highend harshness a lot

Nice demo Andy! I'm looking for a reverb but not sure which one to get, this one or the twin. Is this amp (deluxe reverb) good for medium size gigs also or is it only for practice at a house or studio?
Thanks!

Thanks!
abn61024 1 year ago

KingKook 1 year ago
@ProGuitarShopDemos why you don't post a video with a twin reverb? on a bigger room at least to prevent any ear damage lol.

I'm about to upgrade from a Frontman 212R to the Deluxe Reverb. Am I doing the right thing? Does the Deluxe Reverb have the same feedback issue as the Frontman 212R?
AaronMGil 1 year ago
@AaronMGil a frontman 212r is a toy compared to a DR. It's just an amazing amp, just crank it to up and listen to that sweet nature break up.
but get rid of the stock groove tubes as soon as you can. And the cheap caps they put in it.

ppericodelosppalotes 1 year ago
I finally got to play one. It sounds sweet. Pros are that it is easy to dial in tone, and has great reverb. Only con is not having a middle control. Sounded really tight but I bet a vintage one is a little more broken in. I didn't get to test out the tremolo (didn't work) so I don't have an opinion on that. I hope to try out a Twin Reverb to compare.
andy92811 1 year ago
I can't beleive you had this amp on close to 10 and you are sitting right next to it. I put mine on 3 and my house shake and my drummer complaint that he can't hear himself. I hope you are using ear plugs ... Great demo!

Does everyone that does an amp review have to play that southern blues stuff? Is that the script? Come in with a blues lick? At least this guy sounds like he knows what he is talking about.

I don't know if they have a demo of a Dual Rec or something, but if they do, the playing won't be 'southern blues stuff' ;)
fend14 1 year ago
@THEFUNDAMENTALVIEW
Westerndigit 1 year ago 4
@THEFUNDAMENTALVIEW
