Not sure there is a copy for sale anywhere. I think we recorded it as a year end project for GIT in 1985. I probably have a cassette with the song in it somewhere in my closet. Steve Trovato and I recorded it some years later and it was on the MI "The Monsters Are Here" teacher compilation demo tape. Finally , Steve recorded it and put it on his first album called "About Time". That CD probably is available.
I always knew that this type of stuff would start to surface! Thanks very much for posting.
Jimmy brings it...anything else from this period where he plays diminished scales in his solos? I'm interested to know when that got into his playing. Nice diminished ending at 6:03.
This is almost impossible guitar playing,, you all realize how incredibly difficult there licks are? Also to get the notes to come out so perfect at that lightning speed without losing sound quality is just unbelievable! This is the best dual guitar playing I've ever heard, bar none!!!!
gtrcoach, how do you feel about jimmy's playing with widespread panic as of late? his days with jazz is dead have to be my personal favorite, but damn this video is still hot as hell!! nice work.
In the Ellington conception creation is a recycled force. Jimmy is definitly influenced by Steve Morse but he comes up with a lot of his feel, particular groove and music sense. He's a genious. Great post GTRCOACH! =)
Was there any classes at GIT that involved country guitar or was this just a song that that the students wanted to play? Regardless, it definitely displays the versatility of the musicians that are on stage.
This is cool,I found an old Guitar World issue (Dec 92)and it had Todd as one of the featured 'Hometown Heroes' so I ,of course, put his name in here... to see him teamed up with Jimmy tho, what a bonus..awesome!
Jimmy is fantastic even 23 years ago, and he cites Steve Morse as an influence. He studied at Berklee and G.I.T. I saw Jimmy with Project Z standing right in front of him and he just killed. I've seen Steve Morse at least 20 times through the years, and Steve is a MASTER composer, i can't think of any rock based guitarist that can touch him in that department, Jimmy is a monster improviser, both guys are top shelf musicians. Todd's a badass guitarists too, very melodic and great phrasing.
Holy crap!!! Man, I never even that old Jimmy Herring stuff existed. He definitely has a Steve Morse vibe about his country playing (phrasing, tone and echo here and there AND vibrato). Never even heard of Todd Barth. Scary!!!
Negative. This was shot in 1985. Steve Morse had formed the Dixie Dregs in the mid 1970s. Steve's solo album "The Introduction" was released nearly a year before this performance. Jimmy loved Steve's playing and had seen him play live nearly 50 times when I first met Jimmy in 1984.
Everybody please note Jimmy's guitar. It is a Tele body with 70's Strat neck with 2 humbuckers, 2 single coils, and lots of switches... sound familiar?
This is proof that Jimmy Herring was a STEVE MORSE nut.
Yes, Steve was a big influence on Jimmy..especially in back in the 80s. He also liked Al Dimeola. I think Jimmy's playing has evolved into it's own distinctive sound these days.
This is some incredible playing! The only thing that I would like to add is that I'm not too crazy about the sound of the guitarist on the right of the screen. The reverb and sustain doesn't really do this masterpiece justice, but he is a master nonetheless!! Amazing chops...both of these guys.
Wow, what a blast from the past! Thanks for posting these clips, Rick. I had a VHS tape of this show for years that either Jimmy or Todd let me have. After numerous relocations, I eventually lost it. It's really great to get to hear this song again! Oh, and by the way, I was sitting in about the third row and it was an amazing concert. Hopefully you are going to eventually post the last song of the show or even "Fish on Bicycles"! ;)
You're referring to Jimmy Herring...in a few recent interviews Morse cites Herring as one of his favorite players right now. Since then Jimmy's played in bands with Dreg members and built quite the reputation for himself.
This song will be forever in my heart :D!

Jimmy was WAY into Morse at this point. He sounds too much like a Morse clone and has since found his voice I think.
