@blutobelushi welll hey redneck, go and learn some history how was it to grow up as black person who at the time when black people being punished , lynched and considered inferrior race
i don't like the fights when ali is in shape. I like him better when he would talk big, show up over weight, and still pull off a win. that is what i call being an american.
Notice Ali in this fight is 3 whole pounds lighter than the Ali from the Superfight in 1971? The best version of Ali Frazier faced & Frazier couldn't touch him. I rank this version of Ali to outpoint anybody in boxing history. Because Joe couldn't touch him this fight is extremely under rated & considered boring cuz Joe couldn't touch him- not Ali's fault; he did his job not being hit. This Ali could not be beaten. But Flat footed Ali in 1 and 3 is all we remember; not me; nobody touches 74 Ali!
In the first fight Ali was not 100 percent fit after 3.5 years layoff. He had only two fights before taking on Frazier. In the second fight he was much fitter and would have stopped Frazier in round 2 but for the premature intervention of the ref., Tony Perez.
you wonder why they clinch so much let me put it this way im in boxing but i most certainly know that one punch from either two of this men would knock me on my ass probaly knock me out cold you need to clinch to gain composure boxing is not about taking the most hits its about fucken winning for fuck sakes
Ali held Frazier at least 10 times a round. The ref here is completely ineffectual. If Ali liked holding so much why didn't he just ask Frazier out on a date?
@dropway9 This ref right here (Tony Perez) was a pretty bad one throughout his career. Although his idea was good, to not interfere in fights and let the boxers do their thing, in every fight there were illegal actions, some of them not that harmful, but many fighters had the nasty habit of hitting behind the head, the infamous rabbit punch, and Tony allowed it. Check out Ali vs Wepner. Chuck hit Ali behind the head for 15 rounds at least 10x a round and was not sanctioned ONCE!
@Zesh911xHD By 1974, despite having trained very hard for the Frazier rematch, Ali no longer had the legs to dart out of trouble. On top of that, the way Ali clinched was illegal, and unlike Tony Perez in Fight 2, Mercante in Fight 1 and Padilla in Fight 3 would not allow Ali to clinch that way (holding Frazier behind the neck). Thus the first and third fights were life and death, while the second wasn't.
@BIGDADDYCHRISB if you was to be hit by either one of these men, you wouldnt have the chance to clinch, let alone think of it, these are pro,s and can take 1 or 2 blows that most men wouldnt be able too, they clinch for seconds to gain normality, clinching is needed sometimes, so its not always for bitches,

And that processes repeats over and over, so in a way, Ali hits Frazier with punches, but Frazier can hit him. Pretty common tactic against a shorter powerful opponent.
truth is if ali didn't miss those 3 years of boxing when he was in his absolute prime he would have beaten frazier all 3 times. frazier would always give him a tough fight, but ali is in a class by himself. the only fighter he could not beat was father time.he might have broken marciano's record, his 2 losses were to frazier and norton.i contribute those losses to being out of the ring. he did not lose again until leon spinks.
@MultiJman69 fanboy inside, ali in his prime, why all muhammad ali great fights are not in his prime? can you explain that?ali in his prime was too light for frazier and for all the top tier 70's fighters
it's about attitude, that's why ali the greats....joe try to win by putting his head down to avoid ali punches and ali like it because it makes joe look like****
Former heavyweight world champion Joe Frazier was arrested in February 2004 after police responded to a 911 domestic violence call from his North Philadelphia home. frazier is better than ali. just as simple as that. ali keeps holding him, and frazier is constantly the one walking over to ali and not the other way around. frazier might have been beaten by guys which ali beat, but the only one that could really beat ali was frazier.
@zignationer Frazier wasn't the only one who could beat Ali - ever heard about Ken Norton? Many say he beat Ali twice, some say 3x.
Then you say Frazier was better than Ali - But Frazier (and Norton, etc..) never fought prime Ali from the 1960ies. The Ali who fought in the center of the ring without holding. The one who could dance all night. The one with the shuffle. Simply the best heavyweight we've ever seen.

@stat2k Its not a question of time, its a question of style. You can dance all night round Zora Folley,Cleveland williams or Ernie Terell,Smoking Joe Frazier simply wont allow you!!at anytime!!
yes but frazier was not a champ .ali was a champ.frazier beaten by george forman en other fighters.ali lost only two games .and 3 time world champioen
No ref today would allow nor any fighter today would be permitted to get away with ALL that holding behind Frazier's head that we see in their 2nd and 3rd fights!
Joe Frazier is really a best fighter ever in the world, pound to pound fighter. He should won this fight. Ali just dancing and running around, that's chicken fight, Ali afraid fight toe to toe against Frazier.
@lalafan2020 Ali fought like Ali and he wasn't a chicken. You can argue that Frazier landed the the superior punches while Ali landed more but on average far less powerful. Unfortunately, judges are human and can be swayed by the crowd. The same can be said about Hagler vs Leonard. But, in neither fight was anyone blatantly robbed.
@lalafan2020.. LALAFAN2020 watch the comment of mr @scottycars.. joe frazer is burying his head on ali's chest. does that looks good to you. Ali is the best fighter and ali fought the fight like a gentlemwen... well joe frazer is a champ too. but still ali is the best...
@MrScottycars You copied that word for word from Wikipedia. LOL! Perez didn't deduct any points because Ali didn't do anything to gain an extra advantage like holding and hitting or refusing to break clean. These were simply clinches and the proper procedure to just step in and break the fighters clean which is exactly what Perez did.
@LedWhisky69 sure did....simple as pie. But seriously.....no advantage?..stopping the momentum of the onslaught..what were you watching. It's practically a half nelson. WT2.
@MrScottycars Can't believe I'm even bothering with a guy who had to copy and paste something word for word from Wikipedia to make a point, but what the hell. Stopping the momentum of the onslaught? If Frazier insisted on repeatedly burying his head in Ali's chest, what exactly was Ali supposed to do? Allow him to pound away at his head and body? Those are situations where a clinch is almost inevitable unless you're a complete fool. The ref obviously knew this and stepped in where appropriate
@LedWhisky69 Ali clinched constantly whether he had to or not, he'd do it in the middle of the ring. Don't try to make it sound like Ali only clinched when he had to. Frazier was too strong and in much better shape than Ali, he outworked and outfought him especially in the first fight. Do you know how tiring it is to be leant on by a 200lbs+ man over and over throughout a 15 round fight? Ali never got warned for excessive clinching yet every other fighter does. Favoritism.
@twiskins That's bullshit. First off, if Joe didn't want the clinch, he wouldn't have kept falling into them. He has a choice not to clinch, too, you know, so cut the bullshit and stop blaming it on Ali. Clinches are a huge part of so many boxing matches, so stop making it seem like it was some sort of Ali tactic or something. That's nonsense. Frazier was in better shape than Ali for their 2nd fight? Not a chance. Ali danced, stuck, and moved all night. Frazier landed next to nothing.
@LedWhisky69 Clinches are a huge part of boxing depending on the fighters you mean? Frazier never clinched. I think what your biased eyes see as Frazier "falling into them", the open minded people see as Ali pulling down on his neck, leaning and trying to smother him. What part don't you understand? You need to get off the Ali bandwagon.
@twiskins I'm both a big Ali and Frazier fan and I gotta call it as I see it. Clearly, Ali was the dominate fighter in both the 2nd and 3rd fights. Complaining about the clinches is simply a cop-out, as far as I'm concerned. When you say that I see Frazier falling into those clinches because of bias, perhaps it is actually you who doesn't see it because of YOUR bias. Have you considered this? Look at Frazier closely during this fight. He clearly was not struggling to get out of clinches.
@LedWhisky69 Why would he struggle to get out of the clinches? again I'll say it for you, do you know how tiring that is? and anyway I can find just as many examples of him struggling as I can of him not struggling. Just an example of his great conditioning. Name me another fighter who struggled to get out of Ali's clinches as much as Frazier did. Ali was dominant in the 3rd? Yeah sure. Frazier picked up in the later rounds and gave Ali hell, even with all Ali's dirty tactics.
@twiskins Why wouldn't he, if he really believed it was so bothersome? I don't see Frazier struggling, I see him getting much needed rest periods and I think that much is plainly obvious. You talk about expending energy, clinches give you energy back. Don't see Joe complaining about that. He was just clearly outmatched in that fight. Ali was too quick and skillful. Don't think Ali dominated the 3rd fight? Ok, just look at Frazier's face by the end of it. He was nailed repeatedly.
@LedWhisky69 Frazier had the higher work rate and punch output by far, he could fight hard for 15 rounds; no clinching. Frazier was no idiot, he wasn't just an aggressive swarmer like many seem to think, he was smart enough to not overly struggle in the clinch, but you see it as him needing a rest. If you knew a man's style was to always hug you and tire you out, would you always struggle to get out of them, or let the ref break you apart?
@LedWhisky69 cant believe I'm even bothering with a guy who had to copy and paste...69 from 1million other peoples login names...wow..yer dumb. What happened to a decent discussion. yer dumb. copy and paste that. 5million times on your facebook wall jerk. Now you got me down to your level...happy.
@MrScottycars WTF are you even talking about, dude? LOL! I guess you know you lost this discussion and had to resort to some sort of ridiculous name calling. Figures. I knew better than to engage in this discussion, but did it anyway and now I'm sorry for bothering. Have a nice day and continue to grow in your boxing knowledge. You have a long way to go before you can hang with true boxing fans.
The thing with the Joe Frazier II January 1974 match and Ron Lyle match in May 1975 is both Frazier and Lyle looked like they both were killing Ali in the first half of those fights.
The Media draft dodger darling's worst nightmare would be Norton winning all 3 matches against Ali,and Frazier winning all 3 matches against Ali. Chuvalo defeating Ali in 1966
In un normale match, con una giuria vera, Ali sarebbe stato penalizzato delle continue trattenute a danno dell'avversario, e probabilmente avrebbe perso anche questo incontro...
@lucky44124, you must not have seen the first bout between the two. Ali was a hell of a fighter, but Joe,i must say, had one of the greatest tenacity and punches i have ever seen in the history of boxing.
so in boxing if you dance around and run... but miss 90% of the punches you throw, you win a round????? Oh ok... This is when Boxing dead when Ali brought in the pro wrestling angle of talking, and dancing with no punches landing. But wow the audience eats it up back then. In which is the reason the judges gave Ali allot of his wins in the 1970's.
Ali-Frazier 2 this fight showed just how much Ali was intimdated by Fraziers pressure he held the whole fight. Joe Frazier is was without a doubt the one fighter that worried Ali the most.
Ali used his speed to dance around and pull some combos on frazier. but frazier would always try to trap ali into the corner (where you dont want to be) then Ali would hold onto frazier to avoid getting into that situation..Boxing allows you to hold so why is it cheap? ALI used what he has to beat a beast frazier.
@Shirishama1 first of all its boxing footwork is a major asset that should be used other wise wen u run in to people like foreman u get ko'd in the 2nd round (fraier vs Foreman) if you ever did boxing ud actully understand position ur body is important in order to hit slip and slide, with clinching it is a little dirty but every box has these tactics and wen frazer lunges into ali the natural motion is to lean on
@aaarrr1 Ali got this fight simply because the ref allowed the dirty tactics. He held when he didn't want to fight. When Carlos Padilla and Arthur Mercante (great refs) broke them up, Frazier nearly beat Ali to death.
@revelation6415 Ali barely hit Frazier either. He spent the fight holding and was warned over 150 times (not exaggerating, that's literal) for it with no point deductions.
@Shirishama1 m8 im not exaggerating but ali hit frazier hundreds of times, and clinching is allowed and he breaked, frazier hardly got anything going, ali clearly won and dominated neraly every round of the fight in my opinion
@Shirishama1 Good observation. I have always said Padilla was mainly responsible for the Thrilla being such good (taking nothing of course away from the fighters). It's the same way Cortez made Bowe-Holyfield (1992) such an action-packed fight. I do however disagree with you on the first Ali-Frazier fight; Ali didn't really attempt to hold in that fight plus it was actually Frazier who was beaten close(r) to death there despite winning. Ali realised holding was the way to win from that point.
@tlig These Days Ali would be no better than Golota in the way that he holds, stalls and genuinly did fuck all for rounds at a time. He would of been disqualified in numerous bouts. BUt a Legend he is. And to be honest I am here to wish Frazier all the best. Keep up the fight Champ
@Shirishama1 Guess you think that dancing in a ring is stupid. Right. Standing toe to toe with a hard hitter, that's stupid. Staying away, jabbing, holding, being ringsmart that's boxing, not tradigng punches.
Oh and lest it get lost to history amid the controversy about the refereeing gaffe, what a fantastic series of right hands by Ali to stagger Frazier right before that (starts in the corner around . Pure class and some of the best combinations of Ali's career, coming amidst a barrage of Smokin Joe left hooks, many of which land. It all starts with a ridiculous counter left hook/right hand at 10:07.
It's funny all the people that get on fighters for holding. in the pros holding is just not quite a deductible offense unless it's either preventing the fight from having decent action, as Akinwadne did against Lennox Lewis or holding and hitting, as Lennox liked to do.
you may say "read the rules" and it's true, according the rules fighters are supposed to have a point deducted for holding. but if you keep punching and make sure there are meaningful exchanges, the ref will not deduct a point
BTW Cooper weighed 185 with lead in his boots. In reality he probably didn't weigh much more than Conn. And Conn was a better fighter than Cooper or anyone else Ali faced from 64-67.
The missed knockdown controversy is overblown. Frazier was no more than momentarily stunned and not even close to going down. Frazier deserved the decision on aggression and activity, especially when you take into account how much holding Ali was doing; he clinched on average once every 10 seconds. All in all a slow, dull fight between two fighters past their best. Frazier kicked Ali's ass when it mattered most.
@FlaviusConstantius The missed KD controversy is indeed overblown, like most historical boxing controversies including the Henry Cooper non-delay delay. However, I've literally never seen anyone including Joe Frazier (except maybe right after the fight) allege that Frazier won this fight. You have taken Ali hatred to a new level. You should watch the fight sometime; you'll enjoy it. It's a good fight.
@RaulGroom Red Smith for one thought Frazier won this fight. So did Dick Young. You must be mightily impressed by Ali flicking out a few jabs and clinching every 10 seconds to consider it hate that anyone had him losing. This was far from a clear win for Ali, nor even a particularly good performance. I took off the Ali blinkers a long time ago and found his career to be full of such subpar performances and officiating gifts. You should do the same sometime, it'll open your eyes.
did ali steal ur girlfriend? every fight i watch ur spreading hate about this man. I bet u kno more about alis career than any other fighter. look at louis, marciano, johnson those guys had major flaws in there game, always a style that they NEVER got a hold of.
@yayamemtv I bet I know more about Ali than most of his fans do too. Well, if it makes you feel any better I think Johnson and Marciano are overrated too.

@onlyjoetee I agree with that, but did 1988 Mike Tyson had the same style as 2002 Mike Tyson? Time can take a toll on a fighters style.
Same thing happened with Ali - his movement, speed and stamina before they took him out of boxing helped to outclass opponents.
Cleveland Williams was one of the hardest hitters ever. He certainly would've landed more blows if he fought 1970ies Ali. Sonny Liston as well.
Two fighters fought both Ali's - Chuvalo and Patterson. Compare the fights.

Ali was warned 150 times by referee Tony Perez for illegally holding Frazier behind the neck, but never given a points deduction.
MrScottycars 3 months ago 2
@MrScottycars You copied that word for word from Wikipedia. LOL! Perez didn't deduct any points because Ali didn't do anything to gain an extra advantage like holding and hitting or refusing to break clean. These were simply clinches and the proper procedure to just step in and break the fighters clean which is exactly what Perez did.
LedWhisky69 3 months ago
@LedWhisky69 sure did....simple as pie. But seriously.....no advantage?..stopping the momentum of the onslaught..what were you watching. It's practically a half nelson. WT2.
MrScottycars 3 months ago
@MrScottycars Can't believe I'm even bothering with a guy who had to copy and paste something word for word from Wikipedia to make a point, but what the hell. Stopping the momentum of the onslaught? If Frazier insisted on repeatedly burying his head in Ali's chest, what exactly was Ali supposed to do? Allow him to pound away at his head and body? Those are situations where a clinch is almost inevitable unless you're a complete fool. The ref obviously knew this and stepped in where appropriate
LedWhisky69 3 months ago
@LedWhisky69 Ali clinched constantly whether he had to or not, he'd do it in the middle of the ring. Don't try to make it sound like Ali only clinched when he had to. Frazier was too strong and in much better shape than Ali, he outworked and outfought him especially in the first fight. Do you know how tiring it is to be leant on by a 200lbs+ man over and over throughout a 15 round fight? Ali never got warned for excessive clinching yet every other fighter does. Favoritism.
twiskins 3 months ago
@twiskins That's bullshit. First off, if Joe didn't want the clinch, he wouldn't have kept falling into them. He has a choice not to clinch, too, you know, so cut the bullshit and stop blaming it on Ali. Clinches are a huge part of so many boxing matches, so stop making it seem like it was some sort of Ali tactic or something. That's nonsense. Frazier was in better shape than Ali for their 2nd fight? Not a chance. Ali danced, stuck, and moved all night. Frazier landed next to nothing.
LedWhisky69 3 months ago
@LedWhisky69 Clinches are a huge part of boxing depending on the fighters you mean? Frazier never clinched. I think what your biased eyes see as Frazier "falling into them", the open minded people see as Ali pulling down on his neck, leaning and trying to smother him. What part don't you understand? You need to get off the Ali bandwagon.
twiskins 3 months ago
@twiskins I'm both a big Ali and Frazier fan and I gotta call it as I see it. Clearly, Ali was the dominate fighter in both the 2nd and 3rd fights. Complaining about the clinches is simply a cop-out, as far as I'm concerned. When you say that I see Frazier falling into those clinches because of bias, perhaps it is actually you who doesn't see it because of YOUR bias. Have you considered this? Look at Frazier closely during this fight. He clearly was not struggling to get out of clinches.
LedWhisky69 3 months ago
@LedWhisky69 Why would he struggle to get out of the clinches? again I'll say it for you, do you know how tiring that is? and anyway I can find just as many examples of him struggling as I can of him not struggling. Just an example of his great conditioning. Name me another fighter who struggled to get out of Ali's clinches as much as Frazier did. Ali was dominant in the 3rd? Yeah sure. Frazier picked up in the later rounds and gave Ali hell, even with all Ali's dirty tactics.
twiskins 3 months ago
@twiskins Why wouldn't he, if he really believed it was so bothersome? I don't see Frazier struggling, I see him getting much needed rest periods and I think that much is plainly obvious. You talk about expending energy, clinches give you energy back. Don't see Joe complaining about that. He was just clearly outmatched in that fight. Ali was too quick and skillful. Don't think Ali dominated the 3rd fight? Ok, just look at Frazier's face by the end of it. He was nailed repeatedly.

twiskins 3 months ago

You have a long way to go before you can hang with true boxing fans.

so in boxing if you dance around and run... but miss 90% of the punches you throw, you win a round????? Oh ok... This is when Boxing dead when Ali brought in the pro wrestling angle of talking, and dancing with no punches landing. But wow the audience eats it up back then. In which is the reason the judges gave Ali allot of his wins in the 1970's.

Ali king of holding behind the head and dancing like a pussy... Joe Frazier the king of FIGHTING!
Shirishama1 5 months ago
@Shirishama1 first of all its boxing footwork is a major asset that should be used other wise wen u run in to people like foreman u get ko'd in the 2nd round (fraier vs Foreman) if you ever did boxing ud actully understand position ur body is important in order to hit slip and slide, with clinching it is a little dirty but every box has these tactics and wen frazer lunges into ali the natural motion is to lean on
aaarrr1 4 months ago
@aaarrr1 Ali got this fight simply because the ref allowed the dirty tactics. He held when he didn't want to fight. When Carlos Padilla and Arthur Mercante (great refs) broke them up, Frazier nearly beat Ali to death.
Shirishama1 4 months ago
@Shirishama1 Bullshit frazier hardly hit him
revelation6415 4 months ago
@revelation6415 Ali barely hit Frazier either. He spent the fight holding and was warned over 150 times (not exaggerating, that's literal) for it with no point deductions.
Shirishama1 4 months ago
@Shirishama1 m8 im not exaggerating but ali hit frazier hundreds of times, and clinching is allowed and he breaked, frazier hardly got anything going, ali clearly won and dominated neraly every round of the fight in my opinion
revelation6415 4 months ago
@Shirishama1 You do know at the end of the math they said Ali laid more punched.
MV7Snipe 3 months ago
@Shirishama1 Good observation. I have always said Padilla was mainly responsible for the Thrilla being such good (taking nothing of course away from the fighters). It's the same way Cortez made Bowe-Holyfield (1992) such an action-packed fight. I do however disagree with you on the first Ali-Frazier fight; Ali didn't really attempt to hold in that fight plus it was actually Frazier who was beaten close(r) to death there despite winning. Ali realised holding was the way to win from that point.
tlig 4 months ago
@tlig These Days Ali would be no better than Golota in the way that he holds, stalls and genuinly did fuck all for rounds at a time. He would of been disqualified in numerous bouts. BUt a Legend he is. And to be honest I am here to wish Frazier all the best. Keep up the fight Champ

revelation6415 4 months ago
@Shirishama1 Guess you think that dancing in a ring is stupid. Right. Standing toe to toe with a hard hitter, that's stupid. Staying away, jabbing, holding, being ringsmart that's boxing, not tradigng punches.

smokinlefthook 5 months ago
Oh and lest it get lost to history amid the controversy about the refereeing gaffe, what a fantastic series of right hands by Ali to stagger Frazier right before that (starts in the corner around . Pure class and some of the best combinations of Ali's career, coming amidst a barrage of Smokin Joe left hooks, many of which land. It all starts with a ridiculous counter left hook/right hand at 10:07.
But yeah, this fight is pretty boring. lol
RaulGroom 7 months ago
It's funny all the people that get on fighters for holding. in the pros holding is just not quite a deductible offense unless it's either preventing the fight from having decent action, as Akinwadne did against Lennox Lewis or holding and hitting, as Lennox liked to do.
you may say "read the rules" and it's true, according the rules fighters are supposed to have a point deducted for holding. but if you keep punching and make sure there are meaningful exchanges, the ref will not deduct a point
RaulGroom 7 months ago

FlaviusConstantius 8 months ago
@FlaviusConstantius The missed KD controversy is indeed overblown, like most historical boxing controversies including the Henry Cooper non-delay delay. However, I've literally never seen anyone including Joe Frazier (except maybe right after the fight) allege that Frazier won this fight. You have taken Ali hatred to a new level. You should watch the fight sometime; you'll enjoy it. It's a good fight.
RaulGroom 8 months ago
@RaulGroom Red Smith for one thought Frazier won this fight. So did Dick Young. You must be mightily impressed by Ali flicking out a few jabs and clinching every 10 seconds to consider it hate that anyone had him losing. This was far from a clear win for Ali, nor even a particularly good performance. I took off the Ali blinkers a long time ago and found his career to be full of such subpar performances and officiating gifts. You should do the same sometime, it'll open your eyes.
FlaviusConstantius 8 months ago
