In Bulgaria we get 1year paid maternity leave at 100% of salary and a couple months of paternity leave of the mother absolutely has to go back to work. Grandparents are paid as well, if parents are too busy.
My husband took it. He hated to leave his new baby and go back to work..
I had to go on leave a few weeks before my baby came for health reasons and I had a c section and I was told I got 2 extra wks for that but my job said NOPE you have to come back 2 wks early because you left early. I thought that wasn't far. So I ended up quiting!!! YEAH! Hahaha
My husband is a fireman and took lots of time off to be with me and our newborn son. I was a stay at home mom, but had a part time job as a computer tutor (and kept that part time)
It is best for a parent to stay home as long as possible. Forming attachments for the first two years is important, especially the first 6-9 months. If their is not a sufficiant attachment formed, there can be many different kinds of problems with the child for the rest of his or her life.
I work for myself, so I guess my "leave policy" is entirely determined by mood from moment to moment. But when my daughter was born I turned off e-mail and phone for 7 solid days. I also completely ditched a Taiwanese client and ignored their frantic attempts to contact me during this time. They were really super pissed about that.

My maternity leave hasn't ended yet and my son is 8 years old. It won't end officially until he is 18. =)
Dad took a couple months off though.

when I was still working, I took maternity leave, but my husband never took paternity leave.
Of course, he works out of the home, so that made it a little easier, but the real help was from my mother in law... I love that woman.
