no physicist or anyone else knows how to accurately predict earthquakes. it's easy to know THAT one is coming (due to build up of seismic pressure and smaller 'fore shocks' occuring) but no one knows WHEN it will come. maybe 1 day maybe 3 months or a year. maybe the smaller quakes will, together, relieve the pressureand a big one is avoided...no one knows, hence 'black magic' comment
